A whole lot of history tied to local teachers and conveyed forward to a well curated store. The overall design is one that I prefer, stocked but uncrowded shelves, clean and easy to browse. Some feature tables and easy to find sections. Used books in the back and a lot of interior space to not be crowded or darkened when exploring the shelves. Experienced the epicness of Bookies for the first time with my 8-month old during a weekly storytime and wow, what a win! We came during the week so it was quiet but also thrilled to know they have a weekend storytime option. Storytime itself was great - mix of books and crafts with ample toys for the little ones of varying ages to play with and a huge children's room. Comfy places to sit and read or work abound in Bookies. They even have a coffee machine in one corner that looked like it was open to whomever. Being a bookstore there were of course... Books! I found everything I was looking for and then some (i.e. a fun hat and some puzzles) and bonus points for them having a good amount of bilingual books for the kiddos. So happy to have found this spot and I can't wait to become a regular - both for myself for some "me" time as well as for a fun, safe indoor space for my little one. read more

I have been a bookies fanatic for decades. Starting when my kids were little, we spent hours here browsing and carefully buying our favorites for the kids and for ourselves. More recently I have purchased books for my book club here and had them delivered to homes during the pandemic and even now. Great value and the former teachers who run this place know their stuff and are such a great resource. I will be back! read more

This place was a random stop during my day & was a pleasant surprise. The staff was friendly, while multitasking with putting books on the shelves. Parking was a bit rough I will admit, but it looked too cool not to stop. The space is huge & it does seem like they're still working on filling it out, but the selection they had was great, even featuring some new special editions of popular books which was interesting. They do hosts events, both kid events & others in their "event space" which was rather intriguing to the eye. What a great find for the book lover young and old alike! I have been reading the Millenium Trilogy and didn't know that the author, Stieg Larsson, based a lot of Lisbeth Salander's character on Pippi Longstocking by another awesome Swedish author, Astrid Lindgren! I loved the Pippi Longstocking books when I was young and instead of buying the books at Amazon, I wanted to support local businesses and so glad I found this gem of a bookstore! Lucianne and Sharon were so professional, knowledgeable, friendly, efficient and I could tell they love their job-I could have stayed here for hours browsing all the item-this is a book lovers paradise! While the local bookstore is charming, there customer service and ordering of books is poorly operated. I ordered my son a book for a book report, wanting to support local. It's been almost two weeks and the book still didn't arrive. When I called to follow up, I said I wished you would have told me the book would have taken so long to order and I that I could have had it by now if ordering through Amazon. She called me back that evening after speaking with her to tell me that she cancelled that order all because I said I could have ordered through Amazon. Poor customer service. WOW! If you are a teacher, a librarian or have kids in your life, you NEED to go to this bookstore. Hands down, this is the best bookstore for kids I've ever seen in my life. Packed full of books, toys, stuffed animals, costumes, play food, games, puzzles, flash cards, stickers and everything you need to entertain an imaginative active child. Best of all, all this fun can be had "unplugged" - no batteries or game console required! The staff there is amazing. I was given no less than 2 very informative and enthusiastic tours. They really love books and people here. They want to help you. They smile at you, and you can't help but smile back, it's infectious. If you can't find it, they'll find it for you. If they don't have it, they'll order it for you. It's out of print? They can help you with that too. If you're in a hurry though, I can see how their friendliness could be frustrating. You just can't beat the prices. If you pay by cash or check you get a 15% DISCOUNT. If you pay by credit card, you get a 10% DISCOUNT on pretty much everything in the store (there are a few exceptions) EVERYDAY. Why would they do this? No one does this. Words can't quite express the love I have for The Bookies. Every time I walk in I don't walk out until hours later and oftentimes I have a stack of books so large I need a box to haul them all. The children's section is particularly amazing. I work for an elementary school and we do all of our book ordering exclusively through Bookies. Not only is the quantity of books noteworthy, the staff seem to know all of them and can ramble off favorite characters and titles. One of the employees spotted a book I had selected and immediately recommended a similar title. We chatted for another 15 minutes laughing and sharing stories about our favorite authors. The people who work here LOVE THEIR BOOKS and that is a big reason why I have so much fun every time I visit. Actually, the more I think about it the more I feel like I should just work here. Or maybe just become a groupie?! I am fine if they don't pay me, as long as I get to wander their packed aisles everyday. OMG! What a terrific store and even more so its staff! I am new to the area and failed to research the store's status (due to COVID). When I arrived, I noticed a sign for web-based orders only. I called and explained I needed to purchase a good amount of books for my grand-children as my son is being deployed to Japan in a few weeks - he and his entire family will be quarantined for 2 weeks. Susan, who I worked with, said to just go online and place the order and she would fill it that day. WOW! Did she ever! I was trying to kill some time while waiting for my ride in this strip mall, and saw this store, but was hesitant to go in. I threw caution to the winds and ended up EXTREMELY pleased with my decision. Turns-out they have an amazing collection of sci-fi and fantasy books, and they have this adorable system of having kid readers write reviews of their favorites, which is both charming and informative, as I usually have the book tastes of a 12-year-old. The other thing you should know about me is that I try not to talk to anybody, but lo, a really awesome guy who works there came up and started talking to me about the book I was looking at. Then, he went into this huge diagnostic of my taste and proceeded to lead me around for about ten minutes, going over this and that book that I'd probably enjoy. He was so enthusiastic and so informative... it was extremely infectious. Even more amazingly, when my dude came and joined us, he went into a long, similar conversation with him, and a similar treatment with a tour of that section of the store. We were both blown away, and promptly bought a book he recommended, and made a promise we'd be back soon. It's a promise we will most certainly keep. I have a new favorite bookstore in Denver! Absolutely the best bookstore in Denver for kids and teachers. They also have a nice selection of other books for adults. I find the people that work there to be incredibly competent and knowledgeable. As an educator I look for very specific titles that they may not carry in their store. Not only do they order them if they can, their communication is excellent. I never have to call back to remind them or go looking for an order. I send both my teachers and parents of my students into Bookies and I know that they'll be able to find the books that they want at the level they want. Bookies is a cut above other stores in their knowledge of a "just right" book and titles that might be of a similar level. As educators we know that it is crucial as a child is learning to read that kids have a never ending supply of just right texts. Bookies will provide you with those and a lot more! read more

I can't believe how many years my husband and I have been shopping at The Bookies - and I've never written a review (not that they really need my five stars). Hands down one of the best shopping experiences in Denver. I could spend an afternoon just reading kid's books, everything from classics to new. The Bookies also has lots of great gifts for young and old. My favorite part, aside from the staff which is perfect, is the basement. Yes, the basement at The Bookies is full of stuff, including stuffed toys to go with many of the books on the main floor. They can't display everything but if you ask one of the nice Bookies ladies if they have a large stuffed Max to go with Where the Wild Things Are, she just might take you downstairs to rummage through all the Wild Things characters. Remember what your teachers told you and never judge a book by its cover. From the outside, The Bookies looks like your average strip mall wasteland, but step inside and you will be transported to a whole different world. They should rename Bookies Teacher's Paradise. The crown jewel of this store is the staff, most of whom are retired teachers and know exactly which direction to point you in when you request a resource. I have yet to have visited the Bookies looking for a book on a particular topic and not left without something better than I came in for. On the rare occasion that they can't find what you are looking for (this has only happened once out of no less than 10 trips), they will take your email, research the topic and get back to you. As others have mentioned, the atmosphere is cozy-think Tattered Cover meets children's boutique.The Bookies always has wonderful seasonal displays that are reminiscent of your favorite 3rd grade teacher's bulletin board, exploding with color, fun, and a cute knickknacks to boot. Such a cute, mesmerizing little bookstore. I could probably live here. Scratch that - I could live here. The store stocks all the big name books and many of the smaller books. I found one of my all time favorite books from this bookstore, just browsing. The staff members are all extremely helpful and well read. Barnes and Noble should hire more people like the ones who work here. There is something for everyone in this little store, from little puppets for the young ones, to books for teens or teachers. Can't say enough about this independent bookshop. Ever been in one of the big box stores and needed help finding something or getting a recommendation based on something else? Well you probably got a weird look from a stoned teenager and a general point, it's in the back somewhere........... The service at this store is great, very helpful and even offered to gift wrap my book since it was a present. They offer cash discounts as well as other programs. The only downside for me is that they lean a little heavy on children or school related items, especially teachers. Now I'm an outlier, given the book industry has taken quite a hit recently I understand this is their biggest moneymaker and as such have dedicated a lot of their resources towards that demo, can't blame them, I would do the same.
