The Big Dipper has been a staple in Hagerstown for decades. As a child, I remember my mom taking me to get ice cream here in the summers. The menu is extensive and you're sure to find something to enjoy from the many flavors, treats, sundaes, etc. My issue with this shop is the incredibly slow service. There are usually no more than three people working in the shop at one time, but it seems to take the staff nearly 5-10 minutes per order. It's one thing if they're filling large orders, which does happen, but some folks just order soft serve or hand dipped ice cream and its still takes a ridiculously long amount of time to receive an order. I'm not sure why that is. The inside of the ice cream shop is currently closed to the public, so all orders are taken at the outdoor windows. There is very little cover from the sun, just a couple of umbrellas on two of the picnic tables, so customers have to stand in line with the sun baking their skin (wear sunscreen, folks!) while the line crawls at a snail's pace. It's really unfortunate because the ice cream is great. Just be prepared to wait at least 30 minutes if you visit in the spring/summer/fall. read more

WARNING! NOT FOOD ALLERGY FRIENDLY!!! If you have any sort of food allergies, I highly recommend you getting your life cream from elsewhere. A few days ago, my two boys and a bunch of friend and I went to go eat at The Big Dipper. We have eaten here many times before, and besides the wait being insanely long (regardless of however many in line), we had never had any real issues up until then. My younger son has food allergies, which I made aware to the worker. i asked her what vegan flavors were available and she pulled out a little flyer with all of their flavors on it. There were 4 vegan flavors listed, chocolate being one of them. My son wanted chocolate, so that's what I requested. He started eating the ice cream, and then started to cough and talk funny and said his tongue felt weird. (He JUST turned 3 yesterday, but knows when he's eaten something he shouldn't). I knew immediately that he was given something other than what I requested. A friend of mine went to the window and asked for the ingredients of the ice cream, and the worker said they didn't have them. Then another friend went back up there and demanded to see the tub of ice cream. The owner (i assume) came to the window with a tub of ice cream saying "we don't have vegan chocolate". To which I freaked out and demanded to be told what my child was actually given. Come to find out, he was served sugar free chocolate DAIRY ice cream. I am still beyond angry and upset that this happened. There was NO sincere apology given, and it was more of a "oopsie, our mistake". The lack of empathy and true understanding of how severe their "mistake" was was appalling. If a food place advertises allergy friendly options, there should be SOME knowledge on what the heck they have and the severity of serving incorrect food to someone with an allergy. Needless to say, we will NEVER return here, and I hope this review can help to save other allergy families from experiencing this! Would give 0 stars if possible! read more

If you love ice cream like I do, a must go to. They have tons of flavors, including seasonal flavors. They also have snow cones and such. I ordered a single scoop, the clerk gave me what seems like three scoops. Very generous!! I suggest getting one scoop, I was barely done with mine and still had left over. My husband asked the clerk what was good, her advice was on point. So if you don't know what to pick, just ask, she is very knowledgeable. Great family owned with great service. Let's face it they serve Hershey's ice cream....can't really screw that up! Especially Chocolate Moose Tracks....So why not 5 stars? Service!!! The young girl that waited on us seemed irritated at life in general. The little princess never said a word....never said can I help you or what can I get you or you're welcome (after my 4 kids each said thank you) or thanks for coming or have a nice evening or come again. She did tell me the total bill....so I know she can speak! The large ear rings with the F-word printed in ALL CAPS was a nice bonus for my little ones to see! Classy!! If I could leave no stars I would. I went there when there was no line. The older lady walked away in the middle of my order so I couldn't even tell her what I want. She slammed down the ice cream outside of the window making it seem like I did something wrong.... then was mad at me when I told her she walked away in the middle of my order. Honestly this is the shittiest customer service I've ever received. And the younger girl working with her was rude as hell to! Will never go back to this place. Also my order started with me asking what flavor vegan ice cream they had since they have signs up saying to ask! I ordered soft serve ice cream and the girl put it in a cup. A CUP? She didn't ask if I wanted a cup or cone. I never had soft serve in a CUP from an ice cream store as the standard type. When I asked if they had cones, she said yes and didn't offer to change it. Okay, whatever. We made a mental note to specify a cone next time. My dad and I had the unfortunate experience of being subjected to The Big Dipper's atrocious customer service and very unappealing uniform policy. When we stopped in the girl that waited on us was wearing mesh basketball shorts....talk about unprofessional but that's not even the worst part. For some reason the few times we've been there we've always had to be the first person to greet the employees...isn't that their job? Also, I noticed that when we start placing our orders the employees usually look disgusted and irritated that we're even there! I'll be sure to never take my dad in there again, and I certainly won't have any trouble finding the same hand dipped ice cream at any grocery store within a 2 mile radius. Also the girl working was angry at the world. When I asked her what her favorite ice cream was she said I don't like ice cream. Stopped by to check it out... some people sitting outside at the tables, others sitting in their cars. As my husband and I got out of our car people kept starring at us. We went in and the place had a super strong smell of a cleaning solution... Kinda nauseating. The woman behind the counter she too starred at us... we decided to leave. I was in this ice cream store with my children this summer. To start off with the place was filthy. The tables had ice cream and smudges all over them. They were sticky and gross. Therefor we sat in our car. Next, The girl that waited on us was very rude. She acted like she couldn't wait for us to leave. Every time we asked for a sample, she rolled her eyes and gave attitude. She was also dressed very inappropriately for a food place. She was wearing a dirty t-shirt and basketball shorts. This is something I would expect someone to wear to bed, not to work. They product that we bought was just okay. Hand dipped frozen hershey ice cream can only taste so good. It's almost like the stuff I have in my freezer at home except when I serve it I'm in a clean Environment and not dressed like a hobo.
