Their inventory is of high quality. I purchased their lights and a phone holder, and they are holding up so well on my bike, way more sturdier than the ones on Amazon. I don't have to worry about my accessories breaking apart by the slightest impact. Also, the guys (Doug and Todd) are so sweet! They are great to talk to and are honest. They gave great tips on how to my bike ride more enjoyable. By the way, if you need to rent a bike in downtown, consider getting one from The Bicycle Shoppe. This place was great for a bike rental! Paid $28 for a bike for 24 hours- bike was super comfortable & in great condition. Employee at the shop helped me adjust it to my height & our bikes included a bike lock. Biking around Charleston was a great way to see the city & cover a lot of ground. Bike shoppe was easy to find - I had called ahead to make a reservation but it wasn't necessary on this particular day for a party of 4. I've rented some rickety bicycles in other cities before but these were very smooth & comfortable & easy to use. Renting bikes was my favorite activity this weekend! read more

Straight forward and honest staff who were incredibly personable. I left my bike with them on Sunday and got it back that Tuesday and it drive like it's brand new! They understood what I was looking for ( just to get it working) and they went beyond while staying under budget. I will definitely come back again. This should be the main bike shop you go to! The only issue I came across was more my fault than theirs. I left my bike chain on the bike, which I usually leave on out of habit. To do the work, they had to break it off. Pro: they seem to have a good selection of gear and good rentals. Con: I've had a string of bad experiences here with their bike service. My tire got a nail it in while biking to Folly so I took it in to get a new tube. Upon taking it in one of the workers gave me a lecture about cleaning my bike more often and begrudgingly listened to my service issue. They told me it didn't need a new tube and that patching it would work fine. The next time I rode my bike the tire was completely flat. So I took it back in and asked them specifically to replace the tube. I couldn't stay to see what they did, but the next time I rode my bike the tube was completely flat which makes me think they didn't replace it and just charged me for a new tube. They also didn't put the tire on right so it fell of and I had to fix that. I spent a total of $40 here for zero service and a whole lot of wasted time. I took my bike to Affordabike up the street and it was only $16 and I got what I needed the first time. Avoid this place until they fire that worker. read more

I thought my tube popped. I brought it into the bike shop and the owner was so nice! He helped me realize that my tube wasn't popped but recommended the correct tire pump. My wife and I along with our twin teenagers rented hybrid bikes for the day. The bikes are $40 per day for hybrids and we enjoyed them very much. The whole process was seamless and the bikes were in good shape. The rental includes helmet and bike lock. It's a great way to see Charleston. Boy were they a lifesaver! Popped my tire while visiting and genius me forgot my multitool so the patches I brought were useless if I couldn't get my tire off. Walked my bike here and they changed it ten minute! Only $20 to get me back on the road. I've seen worse prices honestly. Were vacationing at Edistoe when my wife's E-bike stem was stripped and wouldnt tighten. Called two of their stores which the first one spent quite a bit of time diagnosing the problem after telling me they didnt have the part, but one of their other stores might. I said just let me call the other shops and not spend his time, but he insisted on working on diagnosis. The second shop I called also said they didnt have the part and likewise spent alot of time with me on the phone telling me how to avoid stripping another stem in the future and what tool to get. He told me the downtown Charleston store had a 4 wk waiting list for repairs [due to the Covid rush on bikes and repairs] but suggested calling them anyway. The downtown Charleston store said he didnt have the part but would swap out the stem with a floor model provided he could order a replacement, which he did then on line. We were fully prepared to leave the bike for a day or two but he insisted on doing the repair while we waited. Nice guys; above and beyond the call of duty at each shop. read more

A friend gave me a bike recently with busted front brakes. I figured that I needed a tune-up and some lovin so I took it over to these guys. Forgot to leave a review but my bike lock got cut by some jerks at my apartment complex and I needed a new lock last minute for class because I bike everywhere but I also commute. Anyways one of the guys there who was working with me ordered my lock because they were out of the one I wanted and it was coming in the next day and let me borrow his lock until mine came in. I wanted to cry he was so nice and chill about it and it made a rough day so much better. I don't remember his name but this shop really cares about their customers and bikes and I love it. I have been to the Bicycle Shoppe on several occasions over the years, but my most recent experience -- Monday, August 17, 2020 -- was a significant disappointment, to put it mildly. Here's the (10-part) story . . . 1) I dropped the bike off for a much-needed tuneup ten days ago. 2) They suggested at the time that the bike might not be ready for at least a week. Fair enough in these difficult times -- they were overloaded. 3) I called during the next week to ask for an estimated time, but they had difficulty locating the record of the appointment -- I wasn't in the system. Okay, that happens. They told me that it would be ready Sunday. Again, fine. 4) I stopped by on Saturday afternoon (taking a walk in their area) on the off-chance that it would be ready. It wasn't, but, again, no problem -- they said Sunday, not Saturday. 5) Again, however, I wasn't in the system. I found the bike on the rack and gave my contact information. The young man at the desk (name withheld) told me that it needed brake pads and another part that they didn't have in stock, so Sunday was out. He told me that he'd call me Monday. 6) Give credit where credit is due: He called me at lunchtime on Monday. Then, things took a turn for the worse. 7) He indicated that the parts wouldn't be in until at least mid-September. He also said that there was nothing they could do. 8) On that latter point he was mistaken in a very annoying way, because what they could have done was manage customer expectations by keeping me informed. Specifically, I asked why they had given me the estimate they did when it was plainly unattainable. He claimed to have called me two days before to warn me of the delay, but there was no such call -- as per #4 above, I had stopped by at the store, at which time they only had my email address, not my telephone number. 9) A shouting match ensued, as he refused to either acknowledge/answer my question or -- and this to me was pivotal -- use the word "sorry" or craft an apology of any sort. 10) My guess is that he (again, name withheld) got off the phone thinking I was the biggest a**hole on the Eastern seaboard, but the entire episode was one of their making. The use of the word "sorry" at any point could have defused the situation, but it never happened. That's it -- finally! I'm writing this (my first-ever Yelp post) because I don't think customers should be treated in this fashion. I understand that these are trying times, and perhaps my experience would never have taken place in ordinary times, but that's the way it went. I genuinely hope that the employee in question learns from this episode, because, the truth is, the Bicycle Shoppe is an important community resource and until now I have always been treated well there. This is a place with a free air pump outside and a friendly atmosphere inside, and I wish it the best going forward. read more

My wife and I wanted to ride bikes around Charleston. I read some poor reviews of the Holy Spokes bike share service, so I called up the Bicycle Shoppe for rentals. We showed up and Doug set us up with two single gear cruiser bikes. My wife and I biked about 12 miles over the bridge and around Charleston. The bikes were in perfect working condition and the price was extremely affordable. Highly recommended. read more

We rented bikes here for about 3 hours on a Sunday. The service wasn't great and they didn't have hybrids like was advertised on the web, but the cruisers rode pretty well. We took them all the way out to Sullivan's Island (I wouldn't necessarily recommend that--they're replacing one of the bike paths and it was a tough ride over the dirt). The guy at the counter literally rolled his eyes at me when I asked if they could please tighten my brakes, since I don't know how. I'm not an idiot! This is your career, not mine. And without an estimate of time or price, they started working. The same guy also didn't take the time to explain that the crank issue I'm experiencing is a more complicated fix, and they're a week backed up... Fine, just please tell me! Instead I left dissatisfied, and called back to ask why they didn't address that other issue. The guy on the phone explained that I'd have to leave my bike there, etc. Thank you for the simple explanation - basic customer service! he's the only reason you're getting 1 star, not zero. Not to mention, the left brake "felt fine" to them, so I spent full price on a half-job? Not good business. Bunch of meatheads. Rude, belittling, and poor communication. I won't be back. Rentals are $7/hr, $28/day, or $50 for the week. Caine, William, and Cameron were very friendly and knowledge. They will recommend areas to ride down, like King Street and the Waterfront Park, and which main roads to avoid to stay safe from heavy traffic (East Bay and Meeting). We will definitely utilize this resource next time we are in Charleston. It is hands down the best way to explore the downtown area. read more

While visiting Charleston, my partner and I wanted to rent bikes. Because we wanted to rent them overnight, they gave us cruiser bikes that had a back pedal brake. This was okay at first, because we only needed them to ride around SOB. However, they charged us for half the cost of the bike to do so. Which btw, was $250.00 for this type of bike (What?). And the charge went through the credit card as a 'charge', and not just a 'hold'. And then, when we returned the bikes, the 'refund' was of course processed over several days. So, when my partner called to inquire about why they did a charge instead of a hold, the rep hung up on him!! Although my partner was being stern, there was ineffective communication by the representative and then he hung up on him! AWFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE, and again, AWFUL BIKE RENTAL! read more

We stepped into this shop to inquire about biking and were given fabulous advice, an annotated map and tips from Floyd, the very helpful and charming employee, even though we weren't sure if or when we would return. As a result of his assistance, we did return- the next day - and were greeted warmly, again by Floyd. Such great service, convenient location and wonderful biking! While Charleston is not really a bike friendly town (no true paths, just bike lanes and several unexpected cobblestone streets) it is flat and easy to navigate. Wanted to experience Charleston up-close, without having to walk. The shop hooked me up with a rental bike in minutes. Friendly, helpful... great service. Not much to say... the bikes are single-speed coaster brake cruisers, which are well maintained. Side note: If you're not used to coaster brake bikes, no hand brakes. Took me a block to get used to. Anyway, you can really take in the bulk of South Charleston within a couple of hours. Can't think of a better way to tour a city than renting a bike. Thank you! read more

I went in to get a new rear wheel and they said they got swamped today and wouldn't be able to install it for a few days. When I asked about buying the tools to do it myself, the guy could tell I needed it done today, so he ended up installing the new wheel immediately and didn't even charge me for installation. They could have easily charged me $20 to install the wheel, but were going out of their way to steal me away from the other bike shop in town. It's a done deal. We came here on a busy day during Easter break to rent a couple bikes. We got the last two bikes they had and the sales guy was super friendly and helpful. It was very straight forward, just sign the form and pay for the time you used the bike when you get back. We rode all over old town Charleston for over three hours and we worried about getting charged for the fourth hour, but the guy at the shop was so cool about it. He actually gave us a discount! Just because they are super nice. If we lived in the Charleston area we would give these guys all our bike business, so if you are looking for bikes in Chucktown support these people!
