Capital Lawn & Sprinkler - One of our sprinkler systems

Capital Lawn & Sprinkler

In thirty years of having a built-in sprinkler system I've dealt with a few companies that do this…read morework. It's unusually demanding work in terms of skills. The people who do the work have to be smart to be able to troubleshoot very complex problems that arise when plastic plumbing and lots of electronic controls are all underground! But they also have to be able to work with their hands to build things, both out of plumbing and electrical hookups. And they have to understand the ever-changing product offerings. Typically I'll work with a sprinkler company as long as they have a very smart guy to do my work; then when they fall off, I start the search for another. I had a problem when I installed a Rachio controller myself; I didn't follow the advice to take a picture of the wiring of the old controller. Then I found that my old controller hadn't been wired conventionally, and I had a devil of a time trying to get it working. So I called my sprinkler guy, who worked all day on it and finally got one zone working. Just one, after working all day! I found Capital, and Dave Fullerton, from Angie's List. He came out, and in four hours had the whole thing working, found a troublesome leak in the system, and made a couple of repairs also. Compared with the average person in this business, he's a true Superman. I recommend that you call Capital for your irrigation system needs. Without reservation. You'll agree with me that this is the best irrigation system work you'll ever have done.

Definitely 5-Stars!

But they were expensive, so we opted to split up the lighting and do the backyard later. We reached out to them about a year ago. they sent a guy out to our house and he seemed really out of it. He didn't write anything down. He did not communicate well. I asked someone else to come out so that I could explain what we were looking for the backyard. They sent him again and he still didn't write anything down or understand. On the day of installation, the crew shows up and they have no idea what we want or what to install. They asked me where I wanted lights, and I asked if they had a written plan and they said no. The supervisor was coming or the person who would come to my house and they said he hadcar trouble. I called the main office and they said they would send him over right away but it took him 45 minutes to get here because he lived far away and allegedly had no car. I'm not sure what car he got to come here if he didn't have one. But he shows up, no clue where the lights are supposed to go. We were so frustrated that we just sent them away. We did not get our lighting installed. I talked to Kevin, who was apparently the manager, although he had been the person who came out the first time. He said that the person he sent knew what he was doing, and that known where to put the lighting. But I told him that was absolutely not the truth and that I was very disappointed. He made no effort to make amends or send someone else to rectify the situation. We now have one light that doesn't work in our front yard but we don't know how to get it fixed. Other companies said they don't use those kind of lights and they don't use the app that we've been using to turn the lights on and off. We can't get the app to automatically set up lighting because it gives us an error message. i'm afraid that at some point we will have to get these lights completely replaced which means we will be out $4000. This company had potential. The first time they conducted themselves with and conscientiousness. I guess they have grown too big and too confident. Yet another DMV contractor that disappoints.

To be fair, the gentleman was quite polite and very professional, which I appreciated. However... What used to be a two minute online scheduling is now a 20 minute on phone exercise. It did work, though I felt like I was talking to someone calling from the backside of the moon using a tin can and a string. The first available service date was 7 weeks from the day I called. Fine. I refuse to pay for a turn-on service*, so I bought only the winterization (because I don't have a large compressor). The price was higher than last year, but not off the charts. I am frankly nervous about them showing up at all. *Folks, you can turn on your system yourself. Please don't pay for that. Switch controller to on. Turn the master valve from the well or water supply on. You are done. If things are broken, then call them. I fix things, myself, as irrigation is one of the easiest systems to work on.

There have been numerous occurrences of displeasure (e.g. service schedules, backflow preventer test submissions, etc.), but their membership plan policy is the last straw. They went to an automatic annual renewal program for activation and winterization. I was advised that I would be scheduled for the same time periods (beginning of April and November) for service. I called early March to see when the system turn on was scheduled. I was disappointed to hear that I was scheduled for mid-May or about 6 weeks later than my historical turn on. I called in September to query about the service renewal and winterization schedule. Shocker, but there was NO auto renewal for the service. I had to start all over and the earliest scheduled time was late November. I understand that Hydro-Tech is under new ownership, hence all the changes. I am now using a different company as I'm tired of being a test case for their new operation.
