We ordered two orders of Halibut and chips. The fish was small. Upon cutting into it, we noticed…read moreit was really, really stringy with a weird, rubbery texture and it was extremely dense. After trying it, it tasted fine, but it was so rubbery and hard to eat - you had to chew on it forever. This fish was obviously extremely overcooked or hadn't been stored properly. My husbands meal was exactly the same. It was all I could do to get that fish into me. We won't be back. A waste of money.

There were a few people making some noise but the place was somewhat subdued. The restaurant really should be called 'The Bare Minimum'. Beer options lacked craft options. The kids Fish and Chips clearly lacked fresh fish and the fries were not only frozen but embarrassing the lowest or second lowest grade of frozen fries. A 'famous' Fish and Chip restaurant should have fresh fries. The wings were overpriced. The hot sauce was Franks. They were over cooked. I could even order a double or a half order on top of what seemed to be a disappointment waiting to happen. The menus were all crinkled and the o unfortunate lack of appetizers was evident. No chocolate milk for the kids. The taste was disappointing at best. If I was the owner, I'd be legitimately concerned about the obvious corners he is cutting. We are to fill our stomachs and not for the love of food. I get it's an attempt at a bar scene as well as Fish and Chip joint. Details and quality matters. I hope the owner puts some genuine love into this place, because it's not gonna last like this.

I have no idea how to rate this restaurant. When you first walk you feel like you're on the east…read morecoast. The servers are all kind and friendly and everything look cute and fishing themed. We had a party of 12 so this might explain why our food took so long to come. Some people at our table got their food straight away but I got my food 1 hour later and even then my order was wrong. I asked for pan fried pickerel got deep fried and it was very dark even burnt in some places . Not golden brown like fish and chips usually is. My friend got the lake fish and was told that she got trout even though it clearly wasn't trout. I was disappointed as this restaurant looked pretty good and was such a cute little place. Side note there is a store downstairs and might not want to get any food down there because it is overpriced and stale.

Food was amazing here. The calamari was soft and very seasoned…read more My friends ordered their fish and chips and they are a must-get. The fish were big and meaty. They had ordered all 4 types (white, pickerel, etc). They were different and delicious in their own way. The homemade coleslaw that it came with was unique and light. The breading on the fish was thin and crispy. The fish chowder was filling and great for 2 people. Service was a little slow but the servers were kind. There is very little parking so plan accordingly.

Busy in the restaurant as it was a Thursday, car show day. The main special was ribs but was sold…read moreout well before by 6:00 PM we were informed. So, one chose chose a burger as there were no ribs which they said was overcooked. Two people had salmon which they commented was missing the orange glaze on both and overcooked. The best thing they thought were the veggies. Finally one person had the chicken fettuccine. There were so few of the sauteed peppers, onions and mushrooms it was hard to find them. Just bland. There's good food, and then there's bad food. This was just food.

The inside of the restaurant is also nice with historical touches to it. The building is very beautiful and you can learn all about the Shirley of the building and family in the menu. Unfortunately the food is mediocre, verging on bad. We've tried this place 3 times to give it a fair shot as we really wanted to like it but I don't think we will return. - pasta : over sauced; the pasta I had with balls of cheese was warm with cold balls of cheese. Kids has jarred tomatoe sauce on pasta. - fish and chips- if you're looking for that nice light crunch with a crispy light coating- don't go here. It was soggy, and meh; coleslaw tasteless; fries on the verge of burnt. How you get fries wrong, who knows. - beef wrap - very saucy inside, - chicken curry - very salty, tasted like it was from a jar; the rice was underdone, I don't know how it's possible to not cook rice properly in a restaurant but this place did it. Coriander garnish was wilted and old, why bother even putting it on? Naan bread very crispy on one side. - ceaser drink was ok. Basic. - hamburger - tasted fine. Again, I think the service was friendly and the restaurant is nice but they dropped the ball on the food and are likely capitalizing on the history of the building rather than the food.

I'd been excited to try this new location in Guelph for awhile now. I'm a cocktail lover + gin…read morelover. Based on their Instagram they'd worked out early opening kinks and were displaying some really cool cocktails. We arrived on a Friday night in August around 8pm. Seating upstairs in the restaurant was pretty full but there were one or two tables. We were a group of 5 and the hostess at the door seems VERY flustered. We later agreed that she must have been very new. She sat us in front of their front window (garage door style) that was open. It was a chilly night - like maybe 16 by this point. We asked if she could close the door. She said she would check. 5 minutes later, nothing. She cane back with waters and 1/2 the glasses were dirty. Then a waitress came over and we asked if we wanted drinks but we had not been given menus by hostess...ha so we asked for those. We then again if she could close the garage door and she said no. So we asked if we could be moved somewhere else. We were moved to a table meant for 4 but at least we were warm! We ordered drinks and they arrived very quickly- I was surprised at how quick. We ordered meals too...however, these took over and hour to come out. So that wasn't great- and what we ordered were not complicated (burger, charcuterie, fries...). I tried the Brussels which were just okay - the batter on them was weird. The charcuterie board at $22 was kind of boring g and lacked variety. Then our waiter once it was bill time disappeared. So we flagged down the hostess and she said she would get the machine and out bills....well that never happened. So another waitress walked by and we snagged her and settled up. We decided to head down to the speakeasy to check that out. It was much better. Everything was cheaper (cash only) and it was like chilling in a big basement with lots of old overstuffed couches. It was full when we first went down at 10:30 but within 15 it was nearly empty. Very chill and a good winter hangout. Two tips : cash only and the password changes weekly and is on their Instagram (however we were not asked for it)

My daughter loves their burgers which are made from beef they grind themselves, so you can have it cooked to whichever doneness you want, even rare. I want to give them particular kudos for my visit last night when I showed up at about 9:15 and told them that about 9 of my friends would be joining me. They quickly put some tables together and got me a drink. When my friends started arriving it turned out that there were more like 20 of us. They added more tables and quickly got drinks going. The food took as long as you would expect for a table of 20, not a moment longer. Everyone's food came out at the same time, hot and delicious. I had the grilled halibut which was super fresh and beautifully prepared. Everyone in our party commented positively on the dishes they ordered. That must be an incredibly well-run kitchen. Thanks Gin Mill for a lovely after-event evening. One suggestion: an espresso machine or at least coffee and tea.
