Didn't have a burger, but the fries are perfect. The samurai fries have ginger, mayo and spicy mayo. And the fries are super crunchy.

Sate Bar Charley - Babi speciale

Saté Bar Charley... where to begin?…read more "When you can't make them see the light, make them feel the heat". The Dappermarkt in December, unusually warm weather. The reason? Probably global warming, which definitely exists according to Ronald Reagan (the author of the above quote). Perhaps my impression of the local market is that beyond the fresh fruit and veg., the food is limited to poffertjes and senseo coffee that will make your ass bleed. In fact, that is my impression. You should never judge a book by it's cover. Bullshit. I do it all the time when browsing porn, the thumbnail reveals all. My point is that I am judging the Dappermarkt by what I see on the surface. I don't plan on changing. I'm not planning on seeing the light. It's up to Saté Bar Charley to make me feel the heat. I rocked on down Dapperstraat yesterday to find SBC near Reinwardtstraat. I'm visiting here on the recommendation of a colleague who's missus swears by their Godly saté. In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Skewer. Without much hesitation and no queue I order the Babi speciale. There's another customer sitting at Charley's table munching down his Indonesian meal. It must be appetising judging how he has completely lost interest in his pram and the baby within. The man himself, Charley, swings around. Woah, those teeth are white, I think to myself. Is this the light I mentioned earlier? Eh, not quite. In about 5 minutes, no longer, my food is served up. Presentation in on point. It's like a bamboo tray with a bamboo leaf on top. 6 skewers, sticky rice, fresh veggies and samba sauce. The samba was the suggestion of my boy Charley. Sweet divine. This satay is lit... LIT! LIT! LIT! In the words of my collleague, "Het is alsof een engeltje op je tong pist". Translation: It's like an angel pissing on your tongue. Oddly enough that falls in line with my pornhub search history. I thanked Charley for his delicious meal and, since it was quiet, we exchanged pleasantries for a couple minutes. Charley brings happiness to people through their stomach. Enough happiness to get me to write a review. But his personality and warmth spreads a different type of happiness. His charisma spreads happiness to other people. I found myself giving a friendly nod to some geezer eyeing me up outside a bar. Holding the door for an old woman who had her hands arms full of groceries. Sharing an extra smile with the checkout girl at AH (although that seems squandered as she appears to be dead inside). "Bon itchy may", "nee, bedankt. Doooei". Compromise. Next book that I pick up, I'll judge it by it's back cover. Next interesting food stall at the market I'll sample a dish. No more shall I fear anal leakage because ever since Charley brought the heat, I have seen the light.

Cheerful Charley, a former bank employee, is the mastermind behind a super duper mobile food spot…read moreon the multicultural Dapper Market: Saté Bar Charley. Don't you love the perfume of barbecued pork, chicken, lamb and goat that comes from this little white truck? Inside Charley and his mother are grilling succulent pieces of deliciously seasoned meat. Upon request served with cubes of sticky rice, prawn crackers, sweet-sour vegetables and a suicide hot paste of green chilies. It's a true 'family affair': everything is home-made and based on the recipes of Charley's (grand)mother from Makassar, Indonesia. In the evening Charley cuts the meat for the next day, his mother seasons it and his sister puts the marinated pieces on skewers. Other family members help to grill the satay from time to time. Especially the saté babi reminds me of the pork satay my Dutch-Indonesian mother used to make: medium small pieces of meat with a mildly spiced syrupy soy sauce. Have a portion on the wooden bench or taken some portions back home, together with some corn patties and pangsit, crispy dumplings with meat balls. Mark Charley's words: 'Don't worry, be snacky.'

So many dreams I overslept…read more..... I thought this quote I happen to read on a blog (fatfatsheep) seemed so fittingly for this piece. You see, I really wanted the scoop on this hamburger truck I discovered about 2 months ago, before the big glossies and newspapers jumped on the bandwagon. Didn't quite succeed at that, but still, I would like to support the cause. That day, around noon, this burger joint suddenly sprouted in the in the most unlikely places, like a tiny black dot between the jungle of concrete and high rise at the Zuidas. After frying up burgers and causing jungle fever for about 2 1/2 hours the truck just as swiftly disappeared. The guys from Thrill grill move their truck, equipped with a proper charcoal broiler!, to a different location every day (check their website/fb page for the location). So what took me so long to write this review? Well, since I'd decided I didn't want to be a lab rat anymore and partake in the rat race, I've sorta been in between jobs and have adjusted my sleeping habits accordingly. Me and the people working at the Zuidas have in a sense become proverbial antiscians. So while the suits have been slaving away in the office since dawn, working up an appetite, noon is rather early time for me to have lunch or even breakfast for that matter. This was my 3rd effort at getting my hands on this elusive burger. The 1st attempt botched when I noticed the truck for the 1st time but didn't have any cash on me and the nearest ATM was out of order. The 2nd shot failed about 2 weeks ago, when I arrived at Gustav Mahlerplein at 1.30pm, only to see the truck had already closed up. Seriously!? Why close up so early? Does no one have lunch after 1pm anymore? Anyways, I particularly had a hard time waking up that morning due to the party my next-door neighbors had decided to organize the night before. As they were pumping up the volume, I lay there thinking: I don't think I've ever been to party where a Micheal Jackson song didn't make an appearance at one point or another. They really made me work for it, but today, I finally got to try the thriller burger. So how does the this burger stack up? Should it be on continuous repeat like the famous MJ song? I have to say, I was expecting quite a lot from the burger that has the Kranenborg name attached to it. And boy, it delivered. For only €6,95 you have a great burger that has everything a good burger needs. I think for that price, you really can't do much better. The meat was just right- I like the spices and flavorings to be just on the outside of my meat patty and not mixed through. The burger flavor really benefits from the charcoal grilling. All the trimming were there: red onion, tomato, gherkin, bacon, you name it. Really loved the tartness of the sauce specially developed by mister Kranenborg. Maybe the burger could use a stronger bacon flavor, but that would be my only criticism, if any.... By driving around A'dam with the Thriller truck, these guys are healing the world, making it a better place (sic Nik T)
