I like The Barn because they have a lot of inventory and are big enough without being too big. They have a nice little gift store on sight where you can get candy, teas, etc, and different stations inside like the New Agey section, the Kids section, planting accessories section. Today we found aphids on mom's hollyhocks so we headed over to get lady bugs. The cashier was so helpful, telling us when to apply them and I liked how instead of telling us where to go to find items, she just went to get them for us since it wasn't busy. While there is an incredible selection of healthy plants and nice selection of pottery and gifts, the prices were outrageous. I was looking for a small house for my office. A small six inch run of the mill, hard to kill, no frills plant was $24.98! I guess it was a bargain not to be an even $25. I might have caused a small scene when I gasped, "WHAT THE @#!@!!!!". I couldn't help it. I found a 2" newly propagated starter plant that was almost $4. I managed to control myself that time, and no, I didn't buy it. I left before I was escorted out. read more

This place is so beautiful. If their customer service was better i feel like I would be here all the time. They aren't super friendThere are lots of signs around the kids toys saying, " you have to buy it before playing with it". Really? How would my kids know they like it? Not kid friendly. Imagine if a toy store posted the same signs. They would go out of business ....... Update they have really listened to reviews about customer service. Last time I went in everyone was friendly and helpful and no signs to the customers about rules. I will be coming back for sure!! read more

Fantastic selection, lovely gifts available...nice nursery to walk around in. Downfall is I had some questions and love speaking to the employees at a nursery-- and the man who was watering did not want to be disturbed. He didn't want to show me where anything was. When I asked questions about plants that would work for what I needed or price..or groupings of varieties that would work well together...he blew me off or I would have to ask a couple of times to get an answer...even though he was looking straight at me. It was the oddest thing, he was very unapproachable and simply rude! But if you are only thinking of selection, it was a great place to drop by! Lots to choose from! read more

I like the selection of plants and the prices are good. Everything I've bought from them so far is growing well. The only thing I'd change is the man with the attitude who works there. He is rude and condescending and someone who treats customers badly who are there to spend money is a bad move on the part of management. Prices are very high here. Decent collection of plants as well as overly priced odds and ends. I was very surprised that the Owner Carla Oneill was present, and continued to have pointless conversations with her employees rather than assisting myself and another couple. I asked questions pertaining to shrubbery and shade plants and was astonished that someone who owns the business was unable to answer such questions, or even point me to someone more helpful. As fast as we walked in, we left due to the rude nature and inattentiveness of the owner and her staff. Sadly this seems to be a pattern here, I Won't be returning, and do not recommend shopping here for plant needs. read more

I have bought probably 15-20 trees and shrubs here over the past 6-7 years. Every one did well, and they were all priced reasonably. The selection is one of the best in town, and the prices are clearly more reasonable than a couple of the high-priced nurseries in Olympia (you know who I'm talking about). Plus, it's fun just to wander around and look at their selections. I appreciate the fact that they have a wide variety of ornamentals plus a few native species thrown in too. I did once buy a shrub here that turned out to be very root-bound, but then again, no one's perfect. It's still alive and doing all right, so I won't complain too much. Overall, I'd say their selection is easily the second best in the whole Olympia area, and their prices are much better than the place that does have the best selection. We've been building and planting a vegetable and flower garden for a family member who can't safely go out-out and socialize due to the pandemic. The garden gives her an activity that she loves that is technically out of the house and in fresh air, and an opportunity to chat with neighbors walking by at a covid-safe distance on the street. None of this would be possible, however, without a nursery that is pandemic-safely-open from which to acquire plants and other items (they have lovely solid benches, every trellis you can imagine, etc). The Barn Nursery has been a godsend in this regard -- they have excellent COVID precautions (distancing measures, clear plastic up at the register to protect employees and customers alike, and a policy of adding up the total cost of your plants while standing outside in the open air). They also have had an excellent selection of really interesting, beautiful flowers, as well as a nice, basic selection of vegetables and herbs (not as extensive as the flowers). Thank you, Barn Nursery, for helping folks escape from covid-cabin-fever into the outdoor beauty of their gardens. read more

I almost didn't go here yesterday looking for very specific dwarf plants for a garden I am creating, due to poor reviews here on Yelp. I had nothing but a FABULOUS experience here from the displays to the huge variety, to the knowledgeable help on choosing the right specimens, to the friendly gals at the cash register. I left wondering why I'd never been here in my 8 years living in Olympia! In addition to having the best shrubs in any place locally, they had a huge variety of conifers where others nurseries had few to none and a lovely gift shop with choice gardening tools and decor, jewelry and clothing. I'll be back for the garden AND Xmas shopping and hope you have the pleasure of shopping at and supporting this business. read more

I have experienced nothing but helpful people working when I have visited The Barn. I have purchased many plants and gift items over the year and I always get compliments on the items I give as gifts. Staff has helped me to find just the right plant for the needs I have (shady with minimal sun) living in a very wooded area. My mom brings friends from out of town to The Barn as an outing to purchase gifts and to see how beautiful the shop is decorated. Honestly I get really overwhelmed here and the help isn't that great. They have a TON of stuff, but if you don't already know a lot about gardening it's confusing and they seem annoyed at having to answer questions from a novice. I think if you know exactly what you need or have a ton of time and don't mind wandering on your own as you Google answers, it could be great? Maybe? I've only been here a few times over the years. November 5, 2016. I have been a customer at The Barn for many decades, after today I will not return. My granddaughter and I thought we would stop in and do a little Christmas shopping, I love to support small local businesses. However, I have never been treated so horribly as I was today. The man behind the counter was RUDE, he acted as if it was a huge effort to ring up my purchases. When he gave me the total cost I knew it wasn't correct but I had to ask for an itemized receipt. When I pointed out that he had over charged me, he didn't say a word, then he handed me another credit card slip to sign, I asked about my refund for the overcharge and he said it "was coming" very rudely. I told him "I wouldn't know that because you didn't say one word, you didn't communicate with me at all" He was abrupt and dismissive and SHOULD NOT be in customer service at all. Looking over these reviews I think the same man who waited on me today also waited on Autumn M in April of 2014. It sounds like the same person, same condescending attitude. My granddaughter and I shopped at Thompson's Furniture and Gift on our way to The Barn today.............what an incredible difference in how we were treated.................my guess is that's why there was hardly anybody shopping at The Barn today, who would want to shop at a place where they aren't welcomed or treated kindly? No thank you! After today I will shop elsewhere, there are plenty of places that WANT my business and treat me kindly. read more

I was helping my boyfriend pick out a plant to deliver to his mom for Mother's Day. The lady on the phone was super nice and helpful. She sent pictures of the planter of succulents we were sending and they were beautiful. When she asked what our budget was we were looking for something around $50 or less since we are on a tight budget and they deliver so close to where she lives. The lady on the phone told me it would cost IN TOTAL $60 which we agreed was ok. Later that day I get a call from my boyfriend saying that they charged him $104!! When we asked why the price jumped drastically from what we expected she said that the DELIVERY ALONE WAS $60 for a $40 plant. We really wish she clarified at the beginning because we would've went with someone else. Be aware of SUPER OVERPRICED DELIVERY if you wish to do so. It's unethical to price it that much especially for a short distance. read more

We moved to Oly several months ago and were in need of landscaping stuff. We stumbled on The Barn and had fun wandering around, picking out several plants. A few weeks later, it became clear that 1 item we'd purchased wasn't thriving and we decided to return it. We were very unhappy with the service we received during the return and had completely written off The Barn. So, why 4 stars? Through a friend, the owners of The Barn heard about our experience and went so far above and beyond to remedy the situation that we will be forever loyal. First, we were contacted by the owners, who requested to buy us coffee. Over coffee, they wanted to hear all about our experience and were apologetic and determined to make it right. They followed up and coached their employee who hadn't treated us well. They asked us to schedule a time to come shop at the nursery - on that day, the owners ensured that they were there and also had one of their employees available for any questions we had. Ultimately, we walked away with a great deal of product for a great value. And, all of the product we bought is thriving! read more

Love this place!! I bought a pinky wonky hydrangea this year and it is blooming with the most beautiful flowers. I also go there for gifts, I love the convenience of being able to get a gift last minute and those who receive them have loved their gifts! After reading about the poor customer service reviews on here, I went to this nursery for the first time with an open mind. I was immediately struck by how it didn't appear that anyone actually wanted to help me. The place is a great one, but I was outside looking at trees after being directed by the staff which direction I may want to look in, and was pulling up information on my phone to learn what I could. I had a couple of trees in mind, but honestly, I just left because it seemed that I didn't matter in the least. Didn't want to give them my money and knew I could find what I was looking for elsewhere, even if I do have to pay a bit more. Such a shame for a nice place, but if you know what you're looking for and don't need any customer service at all, probably a good place. Do you think they read these reviews. The Barn Nursery is the best! I selected and tagged some plants to be used for a fundraising event, but had to send a co-worker to pick them up. The staff at The Barn were so friendly and helpful! They walked around with my coworker and helped her to locate all of the plants that I had selected which saved a ton of time. When I made my selections I wasn't even sure what I was looking for and their expert staff helped me to find exactly the perfect plants for our event. read more
