The owner, to me: "I will fucking knock you out". AVOID THIS PLACE!
The staff here have always been extremely rude. It's a very expensive place, the food is actually not bad (although not worth that price), and it's a good location. But it's the absolute epitome of 'the customer's always wrong'. You have to sit where they tell you to sit, they shout across at one another constantly while you're trying to read, or talk, or work, half the seat are en route to and from the kitchen, and the staff are the absolute rudest most horrible people you will meet, operating in London.
Now, to the incident in question. I arrived, ordered a cup of tea (which I had to call them over to the counter to serve me, after waiting there for five minutes), then I sat down with my tea. Started drinking it, with my laptop out, and one of the two owners walked over and told me I might have to move soon to a smaller table, if more people come. This would, of course, be quite reasonable if I'd been informed before. But I'd started drinking the tea. One minute later, the other guy came and repeated that I might have to move soon. Then another minute later the first guy came over and told me I had to move (there were three empty, larger, tables around me). I said I didn't want the rest of the tea - I'd just started it and had been looking for somewhere to work. At the counter, I suggested that I pay half for the tea, seeing as I wouldn't be having it and that, had I been informed before I paid that there were conditions on me drinking it, then I wouldn't have bought the tea in the first place. I needed somewhere to work. Their single tables are neither big enough nor tall enough to work on, so why would I have bought it if that was the option.
At the counter, the man said to me: "You should have known our policy before you come in."
My (in fairness, I accept, rude) reply: "I should know your policy? Don't be an idiot."
His reply, instantly: "I will fucking knock you out. You call me an idiot again and I will fucking knock you out."
He walked up as close as he could get to my face, breathed onto me, and said this.
Of course, I was definitely rude to say he was being an idiot. And similarly, the speed of his reaction suggests the temperament of someone who's very used to being called an idiot, so the topic is presumably sensitive. But I also doubt this sounds like the kind of place you would like to eat.
I've never felt comfortable at this place. It's just a convenient location. It's only the second time I've ever written a Yelp review also. But this place is awful and it's owners are horrid and I couldn't recommend anywhere less. There are so many much nicer places nearby - go to one of them. read more
