Strudels and stritsels and pastries, oh my!…read more When I walk into Bachmans Patisserie, I always revert back to being 5, when being given a sweet treat was a pleasure unrivaled by anything. Bachmans is quietly nestled in a row of shops which are situated along a busy road - you might not give it a second thought when you wizz past, but if I told you that this unassuming little place was voted Best Patisserie in the UK (2007) - would you stop the car then? This is not your bog standard bakery, there are 5 full time pastry chefs on the premises working on sweet concoctions. Being half Austrian, this is the only place that I buy Stritsel (it's a sweet brioche bread stuffed with raisins and currents). The owners are Swiss so they know how to make it properly. The cakes and pastries are almost too beautiful to eat, but don't let that stop you from tucking in. They also make bespoke cakes for weddings and parties - although if I were to get married and got the cake from here, I would be thinking less "I do", and more "When do I get to eat the cake?"

For less than a pound, you can gobble down a moist carrot fairy cake with fabulously fluffy frosting. Mmm... frosting. It's silly to try and say which establishment is "better" - there are so many factors on which that call can be made. Undoubtedly, Climpson provide better quality. But do they provide better value? I'd argue no. For just over two quid you can get a steak pasty and an apple and blackcurrent slice. That's a lot of happiness per pound. The bread's pretty good too. And cheap.

Walking in Candy Cakes feels like stepping into an adolescent manga cartoon. Bright colours of…read morelurid pink, luminescent green, every colour in the rainbow call out from their splashed position on top of muffins urging us to eat them. And yes, muffins, not cupcakes like I initially thought. As seems to happen more frequently, my wallet shrieked at the excessive £3.50 price tag for one cake. Fair enough, you do get a fancy penny sweet wedged into the top of your cake and there is an enormous choice of flavours and I was surprised to find a pint sized cup of candy floss wedged into my bag, but £3.50 still hurts. For the cake itself, the icing is super sweet and the cake super moist. Together they amalgamate into a decent cakey snack. Truth is Candy Cakes should be called Cyber Cake or Kiddies Cartoon Cake, because as an adult, I struggle to take fluorescent muffins with teddy bears stuck on top seriously.

The cakes not only look beautifully, but taste equally divine! Last time I've had a rhubarb muffin - I haven't seen a muffin like that anywhere else. I was expecting it to be a bit sour, but it was perfectly balanced with the custard, which was additionally making it nice and moist even after a few hours. And the pecan brownie is a masterpiece. Nicely crumbly on the outside, gooey on the inside with an extra crunch from the nuts. You can always try a cake of cookie before you buy and the he stuff is always super friendly and helpful Unfortunately, they don't have gluten free options, but you can find wheat & dairy free instead.

Eric can be seen in the shop from time to time! (He was there when I went last weekend and he is exactly as you see him on TV). A bit of a trek to get to Battersea Reach, I must admit. One has to want to go there to go there, if you see what I mean. Visually glorious selection of cakes and some savory options. To be honest, I thought my cake, a pistachio powder dusted fresh cream sponge topped with fresh berries, tasted a bit bland. It was not cheap! Service was a little amateur but genuinely attentive. All in all, a nice place to spend a while away from the madness that is London. Merchandising within the shop is interesting. Apart from cakes, gift and skin care items are on offer. Some even displayed in and amongst the cakes displays? (Saw pots of hand cream placed within the cakes display) Not sure if that struck the right note retail strategy-wise. I would have liked to see more cakes/bakewares first because they really excite my senses coming to a specialist patisserie. The gift items are supplemental and need to be merchandised separately and carefully. Prices for the cookery school are not for the faint hearted!! A half day chocolate course comes in at just under £100 and a full day baking course costs £250. However students get to take the things they make home with them and a lunch is included in the price.

We've ordered them for birthdays and anniversaries. The cakes are decorated with fresh fruit and layers of architecturally designed chocolate. My favorite was the white mousse cake.
