Great experience here this past Sunday. Line was long so the receptionist took my name and encouraged me to come back in an hour. Walked back in and was taken to a chair right away. I don't have a complicated hair style but the stylist did a really nice job and was able to fix a bad cut that I'd gotten last time. Update: as I noted in my original review, the customer service at The Barbers is excellent. Soon after my review was posted, one of the managers reached out to me to begin resolving any issues. Keep in mind this was late night on halloween night. If that isn't attentiveness to customers and taking it that extra step, then I don't know what is. Ultimately my issue was resolved by a manager offering to have a senior barber/stylist fix my hair. I received email and phone correspondences, which were all friendly and genuinely caring. I set up an appointment to go back and was back out looking better than before in no time. Have I learned anything from the experience? Of course. Treat the people who take care of you the same way you would like to be treated. Regarding haircuts, every stylist/barber is different. I would recommend tying out a few until you find someone you like. Grab their card and call ahead, particularly on busy days, to make sure your person of choice is available. Evan does a really great job, consistently . My nine year old son who has a very sensitive scalp and has sensory issues and hates to get his hair cut feels comfortable in Evans chair. There were two girls in the front desk one of them "Jordan" was writing on the clipboard, when she finished she just pass it to me with a cold look and then just left without saying a word. I felt so unwelcome and right after that the other girl was sweet she immediately felt how horrible "Jordan" treated me and welcomed me to the shop. While i was waiting for my turn, i was amazed how great the stylists treated their customers.. They were talking and laughing with them. After 30 minutes, to my surprise my turn was with "Jordan". The horrible treat continued along with a horrible haircut. This place is not all bad.. Just try to avoid "Jordan" from cutting your hair. I'm consistently amazed by how much I love my cut after sitting in Kipoon's chair and letting her work her magic! I'm always indecisive and she still manages to know exactly what I want. I feel confident and happy with my hair each time that I leave. She provides great service and is the sweetest person. I recently moved and tried another barber, and my hair ended up a disaster. I drive 3 hours to get my hair cut here now. The staff is always super friendly, the prices are more than reasonable, and the environment is welcoming. Called ahead and the lady said there was a 20 minute wait, so we showed up 20 minutes later, waited 45 minutes, and ended up leaving without a hair cut. I go here about once a month and am consistently pleased with the haircut. It is relatively quick and priced fairly. I tip 4 to make it a flat 20 for my basic men's haircut. The addition of sports being played on numerous TVs is appreciated and u am sure some take advantage of the free popcorn, sodas, and pool table. I decided to review The Barbers in Corvallis, Oregon because I have gone there a few times in the past and have had both good experiences and okay experiences, but never bad ones. I like to go there because it is a short drive from my house on Jefferson St. and their theme is sports entertainment, with different sports channels playing on a plethora of television sets throughout the shop. Each station has a TV right in front of it so you always have a solid view of a sports game or highlights from the previous day. I feel like it is a nice mix between a large chain type establishment and that hometown, neighborhood barbershop feel and atmosphere. http://thebarbersonline.com/ When I get my hair cut, I do not ask for much. I have short hair so all I really need is a solid fade, so it does not take a lot to impress me. I expect to pay a decent price, anywhere between ten and fifteen dollars. I expect to pay somewhat of a low amount because I only need a buzz cut and I could have a friend cut my hair for free, although I realize most shops have a minimum requirement; and I am paying for the labor and the time in the chair. I expect to be treated with respect when I go get my haircut and I expect for the person cutting my hair to listen to my requirements before cutting my hair. I also expect them to be nice and seem like they enjoy their job, because nothing is more awkward and disheartening when you have to spend twenty minutes or half an hour with someone who acts like they are being forced to be there. So yesterday I called The Barbers and asked if they were busy. They said no and I asked who was working at the time because I would like to have the same person who cut my hair last time to cut my hair this time because I know she knows how I like it to be cut. They informed me that Kipoon (the woman who cut my hair the last time I visited there) was working so I said I would be there in ten minutes and they said great. When I entered I was immediately greeted and they had my name on the list when I called and I was seated right away. At times in the past I have waited a little bit to be seated but it was enjoyable because they have a pool table right in the shop and by the time I was done playing a game with a friend, they were ready for me. So I sat down and explained how I would like my hair to be cut and Kipoon was very nice and very professional, remembering the last time I was there so she was already ready to go, sort of knowing how I like my haircut. We had a conversation and the cut was done in about twenty minutes. I would highly recommend her if you are looking for a particular person while you are there! The main thing I like about The Barbers is that they go out of their way to go the extra mile. She continually asked me throughout my time in the chair if everything looked good or if she should change anything. Some barbershops I have been to just cut your hair without much effort and send you on your way; but this place makes sure they do it exactly how you want, and they are also very knowledgeable and ready to give advice if you ask them how they think your hair should look. Another way they go the extra mile is a nice shoulder massage at the end of the cut. They also style your hair nicely and give you a free soda as you walk out! Free is always nice! My haircut ended up being sixteen dollars so with a tip I ended up paying about twenty dollars. That is a little more than I would prefer to spend on a simple buzz cut but like I said earlier in my review, they go the extra mile at this place and that is why I am comfortable paying that amount of money. Overall I had a great experience at The Barbers in Corvallis. The service was great, the people were friendly and professional, and I was in and out the door in less than forty minutes. Getting your hair cut is such a simple service so I feel like a lot of companies are okay with just doing the bare minimum, but not at the Barbers. The reason I enjoy going there and the reason I think they are successful is that they go out of there to make your experience the best it can possibly be. I was let down today. I lived in Corvallis a while ago and today when I was in town I went back to Barbers because they were always great with my hair. Not the case today. I asked for a fade 1.5 on the sides and a scissors cut finger length on top. There were no scissors invovled. I got buzzed all over. My husband took our eleven year old son in for a trim today and our son left almost completely sheered and REALLY, REALLY upset. We usually go to Fresh Fades but they had a really long wait so they thought they'd try these guys out...shoulda read the YELP reviews first. At Fresh Fades,they call the hair cut number a 2 and 4 ( it always turns out short on the sides and at least an inch and a half to two inches on top so it will stand up....stylin'.) My husband told STEPHANIE ( the barber) that that's what they wanted. My husband and son's version ( I believe them) is that she sat my son down in the chair, with little friendliness and NO consultation, and took the blade right to the MIDDLE of the top of my son's head and started buzzing away. At that point, WHEN YOU START A HAIR CUT IN THE MIDDLE/TOP OF SOMEONE'S HEAD, there really is no turning back. I think my son was in utter shock...his hair was at least three or four inches long on top and she ended up using a 1/2" blade! She ended up only using one length on his whole head...instead of the fade that they asked for. I asked my son if she had asked what he wanted or how long he wanted it and he said that she didn't and my husband confirms that as he was right there the whole time. I called in not too long after and asked to speak to both the barber and her manager. Her version of the story was that she in fact, DID NOT consult with my son about what he wanted but told my husband that..."it's a 1/2" shorter"....THAT WOULD LEAVE SOMEONE TO BELIEVE THAT IT WOULD BE ABOUT A 1/2" SHORTER THAN WHAT WAS ALREADY ON YOUR HEAD....WHICH IS WHAT WE WERE LOOKING FOR ROUGHLY.....so if she was trying to prove a point, it really wasn't one in her favor. When I spoke to Jolie ( sp?) the Manager, she was extremely understanding and took the time to listen to my complaints...I didn't get the same feeling from the Barber. She offered a discount and was apologetic and said she'd write up a report. I asked her why she thought the barber didn't actually ask my son ( with a literal, show of hands) how long he wanted his hair...especially since Jolie explained that sometimes customers get the numbers wrong on blades. Again, she said she'd discuss it with her. I also asked why she would have asked my husband if they wanted it shorter on top than on the sides (??????) Ok.....I need to pause here because........when was the last time you saw someone with hair that was shorter on top than on the sides? I'll tell you when....it was either at the circus or your mostly-bald uncle Barry. What's more is that the cut is uneven in places and the back of my son's neck looks like someone scraped it with a dull knife. If she had taken any time at all ( the whole thing took about five minutes, I'm told) she'd see that my son has a really prominent cowlick in the center of his forehead and that a SUPER short cut would completely work against that. Apparently she offered him his "complimentary massage" after she was done with the shear.....not sensing that she had a completely unsatisfied customer in her seat on the verge of tears. Nice...real nice. My son declined. Lastly, the website boasts of FREE SODA AND POPCORN OFFERED. Not once were they offered either. When I went in for our refund, I smelled no popcorn what so ever. Since I can't give zero stars, the one star given is for JOLIE, the Manager for handling the situation in the best way possible. I was a pretty pissed Mom calling and she was professional and caring. Not ever going here again but my advice to anyone who does is to get a thorough consult before the blade makes contact with your head. UPDATE: Day two and we've discovered that one side burn is 1/2" longer than the other. I actually measured it....but it's more than obvious. One stops a the top of his hear and angles up and the other stops in the middle of his ear and is straight. Really no attention to detail from the Barber...pretty big thing to miss. I have had Jolie, Kipoon, and Kathleen and one other young lady cut my hair and have never had anything close to a bad experience. Granted I only come in about once every three months or so, but they all have done a great job. Kathleen, who has moved on, even postponed her lunch to fit me in. Really unprofessional. I almost got my ear cut off. The mirror was a bit far so I could not see was my ear bleeding or not. And the lady who cuts it for me said I was fine. She tried to wipe out the blood on my ear with the tower and I saw my blood on the tower as she put in on the desk in front me of me. The quality of the haircut was also really bad. After waiting almost an hour the stylists started calling names that had already been called and no one was here the first time making our wait even longer! When I inquired to why my son wasn't next she said that the previous customers had come back and that they are allowed to stay on list even after the name has been called and the customer wasn't here! We took our 1 year old son here for his first haircut, we we're taken to a chair by Travis. He was very friendly and offered my son a toy to hold. Getting into the haircut, he was very tolerant of my squirmy son and worked with his movements, making sure to pull away if it could have been dangerous. It took a village to get his hair cut! I have been here twice. The first time the lady obviously was not pleased about having to cut my black hair. She didn't apply much effort to her cut. The second time I was hoping for somebody else but she was the next one available for me. She dragged her feet, chatted with another hairdresser who had finished after her and she avoided me. I've been going here for over 5 years. Lately I've noticed that when I come in with my kids we get skipped on the list. This never happens when I come alone. Today I walked in and asked if there was a wait. I was told no. Then I bring my kids in and suddenly that's not the case. I ask what's going on and I'm told people can call in early for appointments. Ok fine, then why was I told there was no wait when I arrived? Why are other people that walked after us without calling in being assigned a barber. You don't want to give kids haircuts. Fine. This place is awesome. Laid back atmosphere and the kids love going here. I would suggest Kipoon as your barber. She has never disappointed with any haircut I've asked for. Always up to date on new cuts and styles and makes sure you're happy with your hair before you leave. It seems like the barber does not know how to cut curly hair because he has random breakages and half curls springing up, while in some parts you can see down to his scalp! Updated review: 3 stars for the way this was handled. The district manager, Olivia, responded to this issue almost immediately. In addition, Jolie, the store manager, returned my call. A refund and credit for a return visit have been offered and the quick response is much appreciated. I have worked in customer service for over twenty years and the situation, while unfortunate it occurred, seems to have been handled appropriately. Thank you. My husband came into the shop today for a cut before a special occasion. After arriving he sat for 40 minutes waiting up front before anyone acknowledged his presence. Once he made it into a chair his stylist (purple hair, lots of tattoos) was less than friendly. Which in itself is not unforgivable, they were busy, she may have been stressed. However, when looking at his hair she said, "when is the last time you washed your hair?!" Yesterday was his answer. Unfortunately he, like many of us, has oily hair, something he is already self conscious about, and by no means needed to be harped on. She continued, "It's just so oily!", while acting as though she didn't want to touch it. She argued with him about his description of the cut he wanted and when it came time for the beard trim she said, "Do you wash and comb your beard?" Snidely. Rudely. He responded that he washed it. She then told him she needed him to comb it for her because she didn't know what she would find in there. His beard is about 4 inches long, hardly a rat's nest, and has never been an issue for anyone in the past. To insult someone's appearance, more so, their cleanliness, particularly when they had just showered less than 24 hours ago, is not just poor customer service. It is straight up demeaning and should never be allowed by a stylist. He apparently did not describe his wants for a beard trim well enough for her because she snapped that she wasn't a mind reader and then rolled her eyes at him when he requested more be taken off. He was far kinder than I would have been, in that he tipped her for her disgusting treatment. I attempted to call and speak with a manager, but have not yet received a return phone call. Tried to get my son's hair cut, and was put on a list. They said they could see him in 45 min, so we left and came back then. At that point, a different staff member told us there were still five people ahead of us and it would likely be A LOT longer. That's just not acceptable as a business practice.
