A friend recommended this place to me and after seeing my hair we stopped being friends. "The barbershop" was robbery in plain daylight. this place should seriously close early today and never open again. the old ladies running the shop are charging 35 dollars a botched haircut. its almost as if they threw up everything they learned in 30 minutes about cutting hair on my head. very criminal prices, service, and bad energy. two chairs that they had was a taped and not even duck tape. it was taped with black electricity tape. waste of a hour of them fucking up my hair. the only good thing about this was she only knew how to fade. that part was the only thing I could think positively to end this on a good note. This is quite literally the WORST HAIRCUT I've ever paid for. It's a weird feeling when you regret not going to a Supercuts instead....I'm almost certain the barber is not a barber at all or have any sort of training in cutting hair. Never been to a barber who solely used an electric razor without ever resorting to a pair of scissors during a trim. Was really hoping this could be my go to spot in Long Beach since I live so close. Unfortunately, my bangs had to be redone afterwards, all my hair is uneven and close to unsalvageable. Needless to say, I will not be returning anytime soon and I'd recommend everyone do the same. read more

This is definately old school 60's. All they need is a barber that looks like Floyd and I'd be waiting for Andy and Barney to come strolling in while they're patrolling Mayberry. They're not trying to be cool or hep. That's where the similarity ends. The cuts are always shorter than you ask for and always crooked. I always have to "clean up" around the edges when I get home. I guess trying to save a buck is not always the best way to go. I think it's time for me to fine a real barber. read more

EDIT: After a few more cuts here, I've decided to lower my rating. There's not a lot of attention to detail here, and somewhere down the line, the barbers stopped listening to instructions. ************************************************** Yesssss. A place for a butch lesbian to get a haircut, be treated seriously, and not end up looking like Liza Minnelli. I always come out looking sharp, and the barber always finishes me off with warm shave cream and a straight razor around the ears and back of the neck. She seems to magically know exactly what I want done, and doesn't get all weird when I want something corrected or changed. When she's all done with her masterwork, she finishes off with this delicious-smelling product that my wife loves. The haircuts are $15, and I always tip five. This morning I looked in the mirror and was shocked at the Harry from Harry and the Hendersons-like creature looking back at me! What happened to Trevor J?!? Eventually I stopped screaming and jumped onto Yelp to find a decent barber. After reading the pro-lesbian reviews of the Long Beach Beach Barber Shop, and being a HUGE fan of Ellen and Rosie O'Donnell (especially their hairstyles!), I decided to head down for a cut! Action! I walked into the barber shop and was surprised by how tiny it was. Did I make a wrong turn and end up back at my studio apartment somehow? I inhaled deeply and realized I wasn't at home; this place didn't smell like an old woman (I don't know why my place smells that way, but my Nana is no longer welcome!) The woman told me to have a seat and she took to my hair like a young Kobayashi took to hotdogs! After she finished she busted out the warm shaving cream and straight razor and cleaned me up real respectable like. Thanks for making me beautiful! Now my wife has to take me back! Also the barber and another lady there were watching a PBS telethon which featured a man named Dan who was burned over 98% of his body when he was two years old. He had no fingers or toes, and at one point in the show he played the drums with a drumstick he strapped onto one hand with a tennis wristband. The women found him to be delightful and "awesome". They can cut all different types of hair (I'm black and Italian) and different styles (zero fades, trims, flock o seagulls). It's two lovely ladies running the shop and one of the women has her son working there on the weekends. I can tell you that you will get a haircut that's trimmed to perfection at a very fair price ($15). They'll finish you off with a razor trim after your cut (don't worry, they have disposable straight razor blades). Your fade won't have a line in it and your buzz cut won't have a patch to obsess about. They are old school, customer satisfaction driven people who want you to look your best! read more

I love old school barber shops. I really love the warm lather and straight razor neck shave and clean up, with a little rubbing of (bay rum??) after shave. I got a great haircut. however I think the woman that cut my hair used to do a lot of Marines. Little shorter than I had intended, but no enough direction on my part before hand. Left looking and SMELLING good, for $15 + tip. What more could you ask for?? read more

I have not been to a "real" barber shop since I was a kid and been going to salons most of my adult life. But recent turn of events (no cash flow) have left me in need of a cheap haircut. Based on the reviews and location (only a few blocks from me) I decided to check it out, and am glad I did. No wait was a plus and I got a good, basic cut for $15 plus tip (cash only).. The straight razor on the neck and sideburns was a plus as well. If you cannot afford one of the more hip barbers in the area, this is the place to go. I know I will be back. read more

This is a small barber shop that was fair in price but quality cut. The hispanic lady was real friendly and made me feel how old school hair cutting can be, but she was very accommodating in making me feel comfortable getting my hair cut. Men's cut for me was $15 so that's pretty much standard. There are a few other barbers in the area too that I may check out, but I felt this offered better value as in Australia, Sydney especially I can be charged much greater amounts for a nice standard hair cut. I don't understand how this place has such high reviews. I received what may well be the WORST haircut I've ever had here. When I asked the barber to cut the top with scissors rather than clippers, she growled at me, yanked my hair painfully, and began to chop at it with what I can only describe as garden shears. It came out an uneven, lumpy mess, with ridiculous strands of long hair clumped together amidst shorter hair. The entire process took less than ten torturous minutes. Never again. Maybe I'll go back to my old barber, who gave me an excellent haircut despite making me profoundly uncomfortable ranting about his bipolar disorder, suicidal girlfriend, and killer pitbull while delicately shaving my throat with a straight razor. I went in starting with short hair (equivalent to #4 edge guard), I told the lady, I wanted to trim the sides only and to "fade" the sides to blend with the top and did not want the top cut. She repeated back to me, sides only. She starts cutting my hair, running the electric razor all the way from my hairline to 3/4 of the way to the top of my head. I immediately repeated that I did not want the top cut, but alas it was too late. She said, just a little on the top, it's too long. ??? I took a deep breath and waited for her to finish. End result - top ended up being cut, no fade or graduation in length to blend with the top, just an abrupt change in length, with a strip of longer hair in the center of the top of my head (like a wide mohawk). I would be pissed off if someone cut my hair like this for free, but paying $15 to have someone f**k up my hair is like adding insult to injury. It looks like I cut it myself, without a mirror, while drunk! My only option to looking like Helen Keller cut my hair was to buzz it all off and start over. In all fairness the little Hispanic lady was pleasant enough, but all I wanted was a fairly straight-forward fade and I didn't get it. Surprising to see how many other reviewers were happy with their cuts, however this is one place I will never go to again. Bummerville! read more

Gonna give 2 stars just because I didn't have to wait. Lady didn't listen to my directions and totally messed my hair up and cut it way too short. On top of that, when she was cleaning the sides up with the straight razor she cut me multiple times. I needed to find a reasonably priced barber in my neighborhood. I saw the Yelp reviews for this one and thought I would give it a try. I was very pleased with my haircut. The woman who cut my hair spoke limited English, but her partner was bilingual. No problem with the translation because I got the haircut I wanted for $20. The English speaking woman and I talked about the long history of the shop and the neighborhood while the other woman cut my hair. It was great. I would highly recommend this place. Great spot! Extremely friendly, family run business, they do a very good job cutting hair (including a relaxing warm straight edge shave!). On a rare occasion my haircut has not been exactly what I wanted, but it's pretty rare, and overall they do just as good if not better than a lot of other higher end, full of attitude spots. Spotty hours, Spotty cuts. I was very pleased my first experience here, after a couple more visits, my rating of this place has changed drastically. Things started to go south when I stopped by several times during their posted business hours and the spot was closed. It's only one woman holding down the fort here, I get it, I understand things happen and she has to close down shop sometimes. I finally went in about a week ago and I waited for at least a half an hour for her to open. Even waited about 15 minutes after to give her time to settle in for the day. Everything was going great, I had about what seemed like 5lbs of hair on my head that I wanted to get rid of. I asked a high and tight with a no-clip (0) on the sides. She began to cut and it was looking good, and then more people started showing up. She began to rush. At this point she was using a straight razor on my sides which awas pretty good. She finished me up and the cut ended up being $5+ then I had anticipated, so I couldn't give a good tip. Left feeling pretty good though. I got home and immediately noticed that she missed plenty of spots, I ended up cutting some areas myself. Some of the fading was uneven. A couple of days later and my girlfriend noticed some more missed spots. Now I don't feel bad about the bad tip... If you're in a bind and need a quick cut by all means check this place out, but if you have time I recomend going to a place where you can set up an appointment and be your barber's center of attention for 20-40 minutes. read more

I have been coming to the Barber Shop for 7 years now. I consider the people there as good friends. They care about their customers and do their best to give wonderful service. I am Filipino and am a Spanish Teacher. I love speaking to them in Spanish and at the same time, getting haircuts that are of great quality. I commend them for building a neighborhood business that has a regular clientele. Although there are only about 25 reviews on here at the moment I am writing this good review, there are hundreds out there who have come to this place on a regular basis and are happy with their results. I've been there when there has been a wait 3 to 4 guys to most of the time just walking in a sitting down. They spend their time to make sure they do a great job. She and her son give attention to detail and pride themselves in the "old school" way of giving a haircut and shave. If you are not satisfied with your haircut for some reason, please do tell them on the spot and not wait afterwards to vent your frustrations on a website to "destroy" someone's reputation while hiding behind a computer. It's just good "business" on your part as a client to communicate immediately. I'm sure they would be more than willing to help you out somehow. Keep up the good work, The Barber Shop! read more

OK, Not only was I over charged for a Simple line but the line was horrible. To make it simple on her I hold her to give me a line that was on the picture in the shop, easy right. Most barbers can mimic a simple picture right. Wrong, the line was off both sides of my hair didn't match. No Matter how pleasant the lady is, she cannot cut decent lines. And why i still paid her is beyond me. I had to go home and fix what was left of my hair line. I do not recommend you go there if you value your hair line as i do mine steer very clear of this place.. period. I will be upset till my hair grows back. read more
