This is a long one so if you don't want the bedtime story, just look at the pictures I guess. I'm really picky with barbershops because I have long curly hair that I've been growing for over 4 years. The short strands at the bottom made my hair look unkempt when I bun it up, so I decided I should get it cleaned up. After reading all these 5Star reviews, I was feeling really confident that I'd found a good barbershop. So I called them up, a guy answered the phone (Jeff I believe), I told him I have really long hair and asked if they know how to deal with long hair. He says "long, short, if it's hair, we can do it." Something along those lines. So I'm thinking omg this is great. They must have a lot of experience with all kinds of hair. So I drive there. When I got there I was pleased to see that there was no line but a couple elder white men already seated getting their hair cut by a couple women. One of the ladies tells me "Just have a seat, someone will be right with you." Great! While I'm seated, another barber comes out (Jeff I believe) and starts getting ready. While he's getting ready, another elder white man enters. He (Jeff I believe) says to me, "When she's done with that customer, she'll take care of you. She's better with long hair" (Referring to one of the lady barbers). I'm thinking "... oh... uh okay." So I wait. My barber finished up with her customer and starts cleaning out her station. So naturally I just sit there waiting to be called when she's ready. After a few minutes she asks Jeff, "Do you want me to call him?" So I'm thinking wtf that's odd. It's at this point that I start to question my decision and the professionalism and experience of these barbers. But I heard her question so I start walking to her station. I showed her a picture of what I wanted and said, "I want it to look like this. Is that possible?" She takes a look at it for like 2 seconds and says okay. No questions asked. (This is usually my experience with barbers at The Country Club Barbershop. EXCELLENT service. I just show a picture, they take a quick look and boom right to work. And it ALWAYS turns out looking fantastic.) So after she took a quick glance and said okay, I thought alright cool. Take a look at the pictures and you tell me what you think. I thought she cut the back way too high and told her so. She says to me something along the lines of "I cut it just above the occipital bone typical for undercuts. Next time you should tell the barber to cut below the occipital bone." Okay my bad I'll just wait another 4 years for my hair to grow back while I learn how to be a professional barber because apparently a photo isn't enough to go off of. But I stayed my tongue and paid the $20 plus a $5 tip, thanked her and walked away. I got to my car and my friend tells me my line is crooked af. So she took a picture of it and showed me. Jeff the owner is very friendly and does a great job with men's cuts! I've searched around and have tried many barbers in the area, many can fade but none know how to cut hair, Jeff is an all around great barber! Very affordable! Great atmosphere and people. The shop is filled with taxidermy from obviously years of collecting. We brought our two year old for his first haircut and he had a great time. Jeff got him a lollipop, changed the tv to Netflix kids cartoons and made our little boy feel like a big boy. My family loves this family run business. They effortlessly make you feel like more than a costumer but part of their special, quirky and wonderful community. That's just one of the things we love. Unfortunately, it took many bad haircuts at other places, that left both my son and I upset, before we found Jeff at The Barber Shop. I'm just glad we finally did and hope this review can help someone else from paying for another bad haircut for their son (or self). We love Jeff and while he is the only one that cuts my son's hair, I honestly I don't think you could go wrong no matter who you choose. I have never seen anyone leave here without a smile on their face, a sure sign of a great barber shop. It is important to know it's a cash only business. It can be less than convenient some times but I promise you, it's worth the little extra effort to make sure you have cash. Luckily, you don't need much cash with their great prices. I had another great haircut today at The Barber Shop here on Hilton Head. I have been going there for several years now and always look forward to my appointment. The Barber Shop is a real barber shop...you can walk in or make a appointment. I make a appointment with Karen (the matriarch of this family business) because my wife likes the way she cuts my hair. Karen stays pretty busy...there was a lady getting ready to take the chair as soon as I got out. The interior is quite eclectic and there is usually an old movie playing on the tv...cosy comfortable with good conversation to boot. Very reasonable pricing too! Being in a predominately vacation and retiree area, I was apprehensive about trying a local barbershop. This particular location is a bit off the tourist path, located in a strip mall near the airport. If you're a hipster looking to get your beard trimmed or a jet-setter looking for a full-service salon, this is probably not the place for you. However, if you are looking for a good, basic, and efficient haircut, this is definitely the place for you. I was greeted immediately upon walk-in by two people, who turned out to be husband and wife. I was in a chair within a minute. There seemed to be steady business here, which it turns out are typically locals living on the island--not usually tourists. I found out quite a bit about their business during our conversation. It is a family-run business. No one fights over clients or tries to upsell anything to you. You walk in, you get a haircut, you pay (CASH ONLY!), and you walk out. Very simple, not terribly expensive, and they do a good job. You are free to request a stylist if you want, and appointments can be made on Saturdays and Mondays. They are very friendly and hospitable people, and run a pretty good business. I left very happy, and will return on my next visit to Hilton Head. read more

Yes - this is a good place to get a man's hair cut. There is not a batch of non-experience pretty little hair cutters walking about. You do not have to worry about be told to buy some over-priced shampoo. It is the best place I have found at HHI for a male hair cut. This place was great - without asking he changed the TV to a kids movie as soon as we walked in to keep my little ones entertained during the short 5 min wait and then again during my sons haircut.
