Mermaid Pilates - Mat & Barre Main Room

    Mermaid Pilates

Having been a student of Pilates Instructor Amanda Rose Kraft for 3 plus years, I'm excited to…read moreshare the news that Amanda has opened her own Studio in Morris Plains. The studio has an intimate atmosphere and has the full range of equipment to teach classes on the Reformer, the Barre and the Mat. Amanda asks each student what aches...is sore... or needs work and she adapts the workout so we get the maximum benefit. If you're looking to improve your balance...work on your core...increase your overall fitness..or like me improve my golf game. Please check out Amanda's studio. John #Pilatesforlife

From the owner: Mermaid Pilates is a Pilates, Barre, and Nutrition Studio by Amanda Kraft, certified instructor and…read moretrainer. Offerings include group Mat, Barre, and Reformer Classes as well as Private Sessions on the full range of Pilates equipment (Reformer, Tower, Chair, and the Barrell system). We believe in finding beauty, confidence, and balance from the inside out. Not only is the Mermaid one of Amanda's favorite exercises, it is a symbol of self confidence, power, elegance, and being wild & free. Pilates, a method of exercises developed by Joseph Pilates, works to strengthen the deepest layers of the core to stabilize the spine. With this foundation, the entire body functions efficiently and becomes strong, while the mind is more at peace. The studio is bright, clean, and has a touch of that "near the sea" feeling. We hope that when you come to work out with us you'll feel the serenity of our space, meet your physical goals, and always leave feeling like your best self.

This gym is (thankfully) not a cheap membership, but all equipment is top of the line and everyone, from towel guy to manager (long time friend, Darren Worts) is friendly and conscientious (did I spell that rite ?) Geoff Mitchell has been the squash pro for as long as I've been a member...just don't play him at pool, for money....or for that matter, any other hand-eye related sport ! Great place and the long time former (retired) manager, Chris Rutgers gets a real five star review ...mwah

I've been spoiled at certain times in my life…read more I was born in Southern California and spent my very young years living three blocks from the beach and a short drive from Disneyland. I got out of having to be in the band, chorus or orchestra in middle school because my mom was a PTA big shot and pulled some strings. Every time we drove up from Jersey to Penn State to drop me off at college, the same mom would stop at the beer distributor and pick me up a case of Yuengling. And The Chatham Club was the first gym I ever went to. But being spoiled doesn't always have its privileges. Every other gym is ruined for me because none can keep up with this place. I've been a member here three separate times in my travails in and out of living in this area, and every time they seem to have something new for the members. With my recent membership I noticed 3 stationary bikes with large screens attached to them. They aren't TVs but provide you the opportunity to ride virtual courses. Instead of just being told there's a hill by some LCD screen, you see the hill approaching with the ocean to your left. Very cool stuff. They have a huge assortment of treadmills, bikes, ellipticals and machines (a separate spinning studio also). Pretty much everything you could need is here and then some. If there's any sort of minor complaint, the free weight area is a little small and can get crowded if you go during a busy time, but it's not too bad. There are also 6 squash courts if that's your thing plus an aerobics studio, pilates and probably tons of other things I don't even know about. Just get off your butt and go already.

Equinox Summit - Dirty towels all over the workout area

I have been going to this Equinox for the past 4.5 years, ever since we moved from Manhattan to the…read moreNew Jersey suburbs, and it's great. We were looking at a few different towns, but I'm glad we wound up in Summit because I love going to this gym. Pros (which are significant): - Like a typical Equinox, it's large, clean, and well-maintained, with all the usual amenities (including the chilled, eucalyptus-scented towels). They wipe down the mats well in between classes. - It's less crowded than the Manhattan locations I used to frequent. It's unusual to have to wait for equipment or a shower, etc. - The classes are great--and, honestly, the main reason to join Equinox (because if you need just a place to work out, there are cheaper options). I take practically everything (except spinning), and my favorite instructors include Kelsey, Michelle, and Jennifer. (John T. is also very good, but unlike the others, I think he still doesn't know my name, even though I've been doing his classes for years.) Renee does an excellent job overseeing the group-fitness program. - I haven't done much personal training here (it's expensive), but I did have a few good sessions with Marcus (and a friend of mine has been working happily with him for years now). - The Kids Club is a wonderful resource for parents. It's so nice to work out while someone watches your kids. It's $20 for two hours, but that's a bargain given the going rate for babysitting in Summit. - A while back, I complained about the lack of a juice/snack bar. Now they have one, courtesy of Essex Squeeze--and it's great! - I also previously mentioned the lack of built-in combination locks. Now they have them. Possible improvements (some admittedly minor, some not realistic): - I wish they had a larger stretching area or additional stretching areas; the one area they do have can get crowded. - They should check the treadmills more regularly to make sure they're in good working order; too frequently you'll encounter one that wobbles a little or makes weird noises. - A larger pool, heated to a higher temperature, would be nice. - The men's bathroom could use upgrading. There are only two stalls and two urinals. I wish the stall doors were the kind that went down to the floor and indicated whether the stall was occupied. They could also be cleaned more frequently. - I also wish they had some private all-gender bathrooms (like certain other Equinoxes). - Like every Equinox, they need to upgrade their toilet paper (Charmin Ultra Strong is the way to go). - I miss the old Kiehl's products. The Grown Alchemist cleanser doesn't lather or rinse off well, and its lotion doesn't get absorbed easily. (But replacing Kiehl's with Grown Alchemist was a company-wide decision.)

On my second visit though, Elle helped me out--she was super kind and really convinced me to go for it. At first, scheduling personal training was a bit rocky since my original trainer (I think Joseph Marcantonio) canceled last minute. But then I got paired with Emily, and honestly she's the sweetest and most amazing trainer. She made me feel comfortable right away and helped me build my routine from scratch. Even with a couple of bumps at the beginning, I'm really glad I joined. The staff is always friendly and attentive, and overall the experience has been worth it.
