Equinox Summit - Dirty towels all over the workout area

Equinox Summit

I have been going to this Equinox for the past 4.5 years, ever since we moved from Manhattan to the…read moreNew Jersey suburbs, and it's great. We were looking at a few different towns, but I'm glad we wound up in Summit because I love going to this gym. Pros (which are significant): - Like a typical Equinox, it's large, clean, and well-maintained, with all the usual amenities (including the chilled, eucalyptus-scented towels). They wipe down the mats well in between classes. - It's less crowded than the Manhattan locations I used to frequent. It's unusual to have to wait for equipment or a shower, etc. - The classes are great--and, honestly, the main reason to join Equinox (because if you need just a place to work out, there are cheaper options). I take practically everything (except spinning), and my favorite instructors include Kelsey, Michelle, and Jennifer. (John T. is also very good, but unlike the others, I think he still doesn't know my name, even though I've been doing his classes for years.) Renee does an excellent job overseeing the group-fitness program. - I haven't done much personal training here (it's expensive), but I did have a few good sessions with Marcus (and a friend of mine has been working happily with him for years now). - The Kids Club is a wonderful resource for parents. It's so nice to work out while someone watches your kids. It's $20 for two hours, but that's a bargain given the going rate for babysitting in Summit. - A while back, I complained about the lack of a juice/snack bar. Now they have one, courtesy of Essex Squeeze--and it's great! - I also previously mentioned the lack of built-in combination locks. Now they have them. Possible improvements (some admittedly minor, some not realistic): - I wish they had a larger stretching area or additional stretching areas; the one area they do have can get crowded. - They should check the treadmills more regularly to make sure they're in good working order; too frequently you'll encounter one that wobbles a little or makes weird noises. - A larger pool, heated to a higher temperature, would be nice. - The men's bathroom could use upgrading. There are only two stalls and two urinals. I wish the stall doors were the kind that went down to the floor and indicated whether the stall was occupied. They could also be cleaned more frequently. - I also wish they had some private all-gender bathrooms (like certain other Equinoxes). - Like every Equinox, they need to upgrade their toilet paper (Charmin Ultra Strong is the way to go). - I miss the old Kiehl's products. The Grown Alchemist cleanser doesn't lather or rinse off well, and its lotion doesn't get absorbed easily. (But replacing Kiehl's with Grown Alchemist was a company-wide decision.)

When I first checked out Equinox, I honestly wasn't sure about joining. My first interaction with…read morean associate wasn't very clear, so I left feeling a little unsure. On my second visit though, Elle helped me out--she was super kind and really convinced me to go for it. At first, scheduling personal training was a bit rocky since my original trainer (I think Joseph Marcantonio) canceled last minute. But then I got paired with Emily, and honestly she's the sweetest and most amazing trainer. She made me feel comfortable right away and helped me build my routine from scratch. Even with a couple of bumps at the beginning, I'm really glad I joined. The staff is always friendly and attentive, and overall the experience has been worth it.

The classes are challenging and keep you coming back for more. ALL of the instructors are wonderful and encouraging while ensuring you get the most out of your workout. I've been coming here for about five months and I can definitely say it's the only workout I truly look forward to doing! I can't say enough great things about this studio - just try it and you won't regret it.

There's something really special about this studio- all of the amazing teachers and incredible staff learn (and use) everyone's name and you feel like a welcomed member of the family from day 1. The other members are friendly, supportive, and it's easy to make wonderful friends with whom you'll really enjoy taking classes. Gina has done a remarkable job at creating a sense of community and family amongst all teachers, staff, and clients that is unlike anything else and is easily one of my favorite aspects of this studio. You can tell everyone is genuinely happy to be there. There are 6 different types of classes you can take and no matter which you go to, you're guaranteed a challenging workout that you'll definitely feel the next day. Every teacher is not only incredibly skilled and knowledgeable, but they're kind, supportive and encouraging which makes me want to do the very best I can (even when I'm not feeling my strongest). The teachers work hard to make sure your form is correct and will help you make any necessary adjustments. Every class is different, so you can go every day and you'll never do the exact same workout. I leave the studio feeling stronger than I did when I walked in (both physically and mentally) and eager to come back the next day. As an added bonus, all of the clothes, bags and gear they sell is of the highest quality and super stylish, and the studio offers lots of other opportunities to further feed your soul with book clubs, CPR classes, and one hour community discussions on the various wellness benefits of positivity and working out etc. I'm so grateful to have joined this studio and can't recommend it enough to people of all ages and levels of skill and strength; this is one decision you'll never regret, and your body and your heart will thank you!

You can not go wrong taking any of the instructors. They all assist you if you need to modify moves or if you look like you are having difficulty with the moves. The boutique also sells lots of nice clothes and the required grip socks. And, since they share the Studio with CycleBar, there is another exercise regimen available. They have different memberships but they also offer a dual membership. Support your small local business(es)! We do! Your first class is always free, so there's no reason not to give them a try.

I had driven past the studio hundreds of times and heard friends rave about the Pure Barre method and finally decided to take the plunge by taking their complimentary "Basics" class... and then I was hooked! Not only are the instructors warm and welcoming (even at 5:50am!) but they make it a point to learn your name and gently adjust you during class, so you can get the most out of each workout. The other thing that I love about Pure Barre is that the entire workout is shaped by accountability. There are no machines or distractions for you to compensate with... your mindset and your body get to be in charge of how hard you lift, tone and burn and that kind of accountability ignites the fire and confidence to push yourself more and more every time. Although I've only attended around ten classes, it is evident that not only my body has gotten stronger in this short amount of time, but so has the positive dialogue in my head. I also have to commend the studio on hosting live online workouts during the COVID-19 outbreak. I know that for many of us who thrive on routines and being physically active, the restrictions the coronavirus has placed on us has made it difficult to feel "normal." I am grateful that Pure Barre Short Hills has created a safe and healthy option for people to continue to build strength and confidence during these trying times.
