Saturday afternoon, busy at the actual bar in this moderate sized pub. Despite the crowd, the waitress came by and showed me around the corner where there were a few empty tables. Menu isn't very big, so was able to decide quickly on what to order. Decided on the Rump Steak Special (£19.50) - a 10oz steak with sauce alongside some fries and onion rings. Meat is cooked to a nice medium rare, not needing much of the chili garlic sauce/butter. Fries are made well, while the onion rings were overkill at that point (could have used some greens instead). To drink there are your typical beers on draft, settling on a pint of Tennents (£9.70). Basic lager that was easy to have with such a large meal. Welcome atmosphere here and quick service to boot, albeit all on the expensive side. Desserts also look amazing if looking into that as well. read more

This is an excellent pub. It's my favourite in Stockbridge, occupying a convenient location on the corner of the main street. There's something about descending from street level to enter a basement pub that is appealing, especially in winter when the roaring fire makes it a suitable place in which to avoid the weather. The decor is traditional Edinburgh pub: leather upholstery, old pictures, etc. The dark colour scheme makes it particularly warm and inviting. Besides the usual booze options, it has six real ales on handpull, and the food is your standard pub grub. They have a quiz night on Tuesdays which is very popular and you won't get a table unless you get there very early. But it's worth it. Overall, it's a high quality pub in the traditional Edinburgh style. The clientele is mixed so despite its reputation for good real ale there's no danger of it being just an old man's pub. It's a great place for a few pints on a cold weeknight when you want to hide away from the world above you at street level, watch the subdued lighting reflecting in the dark red ceiling (lovely traditional pressed tin) and set the world to rights over a few real ales. read more

This is exactly the kind of place I want when I'm looking for a pub. Old, dark wood (and lots of red paint), gorgeous bar, fireplace, ales on tap. Definitely not in Germany anymore! As we were unfamiliar with the ales, the waitress kindly brought over some small samples to help us choose. Of course I no longer remember the names of the ones we tried, but they were tasty. I ordered the eggplant (I mean aubergine) dish. It was a strange hodgepodge of ingredients in a dish with mozzarella melted over it - more like something I would make at home when I'm trying to clean out the fridge rather than a combination of foods chosen to compliment each other. But it got the job done (the job being getting rid of my ravenous hunger). My dining companion was equally satisfied-but-not-impressed with his burger and chips. Either food is not this place's strength, or we ordered the wrong things. No matter, really, as we'll be back anyway for the atmosphere and beer. read more

It is a gastro pub. - Not entirely my scene but enjoyable. They have a central bar and many comfortable places to sit - many nooks and crannies. I was pleased to notice a fireplace roaring away in the bar area. Obviously a favourite area to be seated as it was pretty crowded there unlike the back area which is reserved for food (you can also eat at the bar btw) The place is dark, dark wood, lights low, dark carpeted floor & window shutters. The staff is attentive and very friendly. We came here for a drink and a some food. We choose a burger each. Those were very nice. You pay around £8 per burger & chips and they are big and taste hand made. Flavour wise my 'el paso' chili burger was nicely spiced and kicking with jalapenos. Why 3 stars? Because I didn't feel at ease, just couldn't get comfortable. It just feels something is awry. missing atmosphere. Many little gripes that individully would not bother me. No wiping table, beer wrongly poored, the table, the tastless condiments, the heat blasters, small toilets, the people at the table sitting beside us, the free wifi that doesn't work.. maybe (likely) it is just me. However I have been here many times before and always have that same 'unease' that I don't seem to have in other bars - so I cannot say I like coming here. read more

This is my favourite bar in Stockbridge! Again, it is another entry which I would have expected to be more widely yelped. I have spent many a late Saturday afternoon here. It is a great bar, although it sits at basement level, its traditional style and open fire makes it feel like a cosy home from home as although the decor is dark, is is far from dingy and basement like. A full range of wines and spirits are available as are a decent range of independent beers, including one from my local in the west (sign of a good bar for me!). The crowd here are mixed and of all ages, so I bring my dad here (he loved it!) and hang out with friends - usually popping in for one and staying to prop up the bar. Wide screen TVs show sports but there are usually plenty of newspapers about so sometimes its just great to chill and catch up with what's going on in the world. I've had food here a couple of times - wide and varied menu with plenty of options but the nachos have helped soak up the alcohol a few times. Great little Stockbridge gem in the corner of St Stephens Street - well worth a visit, just save a seat at the bar for me! read more

Generally good service and a wide ranging menu of pub grub (although personally I don't recommend the leek, mushroom & tarragon cutlets unless you like tasting only tarragon). The pub's one major negative point is that it doesn't really encourage anyone to be a designated driver, managing to charge £2.40 for a pint of Lime & Soda, which is not far shy of the cheapest alcoholic pint, with branded soft drinks coming in at the same or higher prices. read more

Had a great meal here the first night in Edinburgh. The Bailie is a proper pub. Great bar, lots of seating, great food and great beer with football game playing and lots of locals. It is definitely off the beaten path. Food is dynamite. Good portions, good flavors and good prices. The kitchen closes at 10 pm. While we were there they had live music which was decent and not too loud. Great place to sit with friends and drink good beer that is poured well and just hang out read more

My family and I went to Bailie's twice during our week long stay in Edinburgh. We came on our first night, which was a Saturday and every pub we tried before it was packed. We were glad we stumbled into Bailie's as they had some great specials. I got the mussels and chips that were on special and they were delicious. I particularly enjoyed the bread it came with to dip in the broth. My husband and a few others had the sausage and mashed special which everyone raved about. The soups of the day were also very tasty. My brother in law couldn't finish his sausage and asked the waitress to wrap it up for him. I don't think that's a typical request as the waitress informed us that she only had aluminum foil and she put the sausage and mashed on a roll "because that's how you'll be wanting it later". My husband was thrilled for this late night snacks that he raved about (and stole from his brother). A few days later after wanting more sausage and mashed we came back to Bailie's. They had different specials and unfortunately the sausages were not on the menu. My husband got the ham and eggs and asked for mashed instead of chips, but still got chips and my steak special that I asked for medium was VERY well done, so that meal didn't quite live up to our first meal. However, we had the same waitress who was just as sweet as the last time we visited so she made up for some of the mediocre good. Knowing what I know now, I would come back for some more mussels if I was in the area and partake in some of their delicious local lagers. read more

I have been told by my husband that this is where women should be going if they want to meet a down-to-earth Edinburgh bloke. It's a proper pub with real men in it - grr - is what he's trying to tell me. There are regular match screenings for ball fans and its dark wood panelling and circular bar create a serious drinking ambience for punters which cling to its outline. Don't expect leather sofas and cocktails, but if you want grub step through to the area at the back for some solid filling food that won't break the bank and therefore might make The Baillie a suitable place for that 2nd 'this is me' laid back date. read more

The first time I went to the Bailie, they got my order completely wrong. But the barman was charming, sent the correct order, and left the wrong one there to eat in case I got hungry while my dining partner enjoyed his correct order....a bit weird, but generous. I wanted to save my appetite for the dish I had actually ordered. So I eventually had my main course delivered after he had finished his. This time was worse,it was a birthday meal, there were three of us, and two were having starters. I asked for my main to arrive with their mains as I wasn't having a starter. My main was served with their starters, NOT what was asked, and somehow freezing cold as the waitress was out having a fag while it sat on the pass, and arrived with my friends' starters, NOT what I had asked for. Cold mussels is not anything that anyone wants to pay for. Sat with nothing to eat while my fellow diners enjoyed their main, told the waitress and got 'Oh, sorry.' Then 'Would you like another glass of wine?' I thought that might have been complimentary. It wasn't. When we got the bill, we had been overcharged for a Large Cutlets (one cutlet) Not impressed. And 'oh, sorry' is not any kind of apology for your mistakes and fairly crap service. Cold food,rubbish service, loved it once, won't be back. read more

Low roofs, an open fire, lots of red everywhere and a pleasant mix of punters make this a really cosy and down to earth place for a pint or two. Nachos were crashed to death before getting to my table, but the sour cream and guacamole were fresh enough. Steak & ale pie was too salty & carrots were overcooked. The pastry bun was an insult to pastries all over the world. Service was below par and amateurish, they offer me a pudding before getting the main course & charged me for a big nachos portion rather than the starter one. Thankfully they corrected the bill. Next time I'll get their burger to avoid further disappointments....and almost forgot the WiFi power ranges from weak to non existent. read more

A well worn tavern that lives up to its description of cozy with painted wood and a red painted tin ceiling. The waitstaff was great, rattling off a long list of beers and ciders from memory. I had the lamb's liver which was a surprise for me to find. It was artfully presented and delicious with bacon and on top of mashed potatoes with sage. My wife's hammer on special was a generous portion with a delicious bun, but better eaten with knife and fork for all the toppings. read more

It's got a fire, great ales, a 360 degree bar and good punters. Also the bar food is soldi pub fayre. There are great nooks to sit in and you can read the papers on your own, or have a riproaring time with friends, either is equally good in this pub.
