And the best cappuccino in Bristol award goes to.... Sourdough Cafe!!! The crowd goes wild…read more Trust me when I tell you I don't give out an award like this willy-nilly and I am not alone in my opinion. From the first time it touches your lips it is just perfect. Perfect in temperature (not too hot, but stays warm) and flavour (slightly sweet without sugar). This is how it should be done. They do other things well, like their amazing bread that is their own recipe; it is not bought from any supermarket. All the cakes are made by local chefs as well and are delicious. Sourdough Cafe is hidden slightly, down at the far end of St Nick's market, under the glass arcade. I even love the way it looks, with a worn beach wood interior and furniture, you feel like you are sat in a beach hut. It really is so relaxing, even during the hustle and bustle of lunchtime down in St. Nicks. I love it, this place was such a hidden gem, a genuine find, an incredible treat...ok I'll stop...I was the first to review it. I can only hope you all choose not to believe me so I don't have to queue to get my daily coffee fix.

They have done a great job in the way they have set up and decorated the stall; it simply looks like a place that you must stop and at least have a look at the food they have on offer. Besides an outside seating area, you can sit inside too, where it feels like you're having some coffee and cake in someone's kitchen. They used to make a flapjack here that I swear was the king of all flapjacks. It was the most amazing one I'd ever tasted - with caramel and honey holding the oats together, and little yoghurt drops on the top of the flapjack, but sadly a week after I had it, I realised they had stopped making it. From time to time, I've been inconspicuously walking past, peeking if they have brought it back, but perhaps next time I should just stop and beg them to. It really was that good. If that was just the flapjack, I can imagine that everything else here is utterly yummy as well. Try it!

Then those sons of satan Greggs decided that dead opposite was the ideal place to open a bakery selling slightly inferior products for slighty less money. Well I say sod Greggs and their basterdised produce. Come here instead the foods simply better ! Obviously if your not after baked goods or a sandwich its of little use to you. I choose a giant tranditional pasty and it was gert gorgeous ! Id have another if I were a bit more greedy. It was packed with decent bits of beef and veg and the pastry was perfect. A fine way of filling up for 3.50. And due to the location you can chow it down in Castle Park, lovely jubly. I shall be back soon !

These are a top choice if you feel like indulging yourself at lunch time, with the cornish pasty being the obvious stand-out (though they do loads of other variations). If you're not feeling quite so glutonnous the spicy vegetarian sausage roles are really good (especially if you're as stupid as me and can somehow convince yourself that, just because they're veggie, they can't be that bad for you). These, along with various other products, are cheaper if you buy two and there are also 'meal deal' options that essentially entitle you to a cheap drink to wash it all down with.

But even though it looks quite humble from the outside, it's worth a visit if you're looking for a simple tea or coffee and a massive sweet treat. With a cup of tea for around £1, this no frills cafe is a welcome change to the ridiculously huge selection its chained counterparts offer. And the staff are happy, helpful and look like they like their jobs, which is a welcome change from most Bristol coffee houses!

Just round the corner from the main university precinct, it is the most affordable place to grab a snack when the conflict between hunger and concentration proves too much to bear. At lunchtime there's invariably a fairly long queue outside Boulangerie. It's tucked away in between the louder and more lurid chains such as a Nero or Greggs but far better value than any of them. Boulangerie doesn't need to shout, anyone who's been knows how great it is. In fairness, most of the sandwiches taste pretty similar (there about four varieties of chicken and to me they all just taste like chicken salad despite whatever pretensions to Thai or Mexican flavours). It doesn't really matter though when the ingredients are fresh and the prices are this low.

But today I just wanted coffee so I thought I'd give it a go. What an awesome little place to hang out! From the outside Playground looks more like a hipster arts and craft shop. But in a good way. It looks intriguing and different from a lot of coffee shops that try and be hipster - theres an irony to Playgrounds hint of hipsterness! Get inside and the first thing you see are two wooden swings (yes swings) with a really nice chill-out windowsill with cushions to sit on. I'm actually sat on the windowsill as a type this and it's a really nice place to be! Much like the outside, the decor inside Playground is different to many other coffee shops close by; refreshingly different. There's lots of colour, swings and a few board games. It feels much more relaxing than your average chip board heavy coffee shop. The coffee itself is really good. I went for the house flat white which was quite sweet and really moreish. It was delicious. All in all a really nice experience and refreshing to see someone breaking the mould. Accepts Bristol Pounds & text to pay
