Why I keep coming here, I do not know. I guess the convenience to where I live and the fact that theirs are (somehow) one of the best bagels in town. But the owner is rude, and on more than one occasion he has said misogynistic things about his employees right to my face (including about his own daughter). The service is hit-or-miss, which for a crew of mostly (probably financially exploited) high schoolers, is somewhat expected. But the amount of times I've had to clear my throat to interrupt a personal conversation or get an employee's attention away from their phone is absurd. Further, I order the same damn breakfast sandwich every time and I get it made correctly, as ordered, maybe once every five times. It's almost always missing something I asked for--a specific condiment, or the hash brown--and yet I'm still charged for the extras. (At least I wasn't charged for the missing extras on today's disappointment). But then the ice cream is awesome, and every once in a while the owner does something nice and makes up for an out-of-stock flavor by handing me a free pint of something else. While I'm a sucker for the New Yorker (bagel, lox, onion and capers) you cant go wrong with any of the sandwiches like the Turkey Jarlsberg or even their Breakfast Burrito. Of course, the standard bagel / smear with a coffee is going to do you right, and the rotating selection of cookies and juice from the cooler rounds out whatever your looking for. I just had the best breakfast sandwich of my life, hands down. I got the Spicy Sunrise on a Jalapeño cheddar bagel with a hashbrown on the sandwich. The bagel itself was perfect (reminiscent of an NYC bagel!) and the flavor of the sandwich was also great; it was just spicy enough for a kick without being too hot. The staff was helpful, both of the women behind the counter offered suggestions on sandwich options. I ate at the table outside and a gentleman (owner? manager?) came outside and asked me how my food was, which is always a sign of good customer service. I stopped in on a whim but will not be going elsewhere for bagels if The Bagel Cafe is within reasonable driving distance from wherever I am. Props to nicely run shop with friendly employees and good food! My only "complaint" is that there was no cold brew coffee on the menu. They did have iced coffee, but I'm a cold brew snob and want the extra caffeine. Not a big deal, though. Definitely recommended, 10/10. read more

We've been here dozens of times. Bagels are average but there's not much for bagels in this part of town. We've witnessed numerous times the owner acting aggressive toward customers (in every occasion it wasn't obvious what the customer was doing wrong) and occasionally toward his own staff. Well today it was our turn. I made the mistake of walking in with a coffee from another place. He shouted from behind the counter across the shop, "Hey! What's that?" Stunned I had to look behind me as I was certain something terrible had just happened behind me. Nope. He was talking to me. I've eaten at the Bagel Cafe in the new North end a handful of times. Today I stopped with a friend who's out house hunting. Both of us enjoyed the New Yorker which is a lox and cream cheese. They have several specialty sandwiches and bagels plus pretty amazing homemade pastries. Plenty of drink & coffee choices plus a creamee window to boot. All bases are covered including dessert. I personally loved their bagels and miss them. I used to live across the street and would always grab a sausage, egg, and cheese with hash brown on a sesame bagel with a coffee. Not sure if they still do this, but they used to have stamp cards for sandwiches and coffee so you can eventually get some free! They have lots of flavored cream cheese choices and whole wheat everything bagels. The coffee is from VT Coffee Roasters, but isn't brewed very strong so it winds up just being ok. read more

Awful customer service.I just had my first experience today and it was one to be remembered for all of the wrong reasons. Can't believe the guy behind the register let someone cut in front me, even though I was CLEARLY in line, and didn't even apologize when he could see that I was obviously upset about it. The guy who cut the line even apologized, which I appreciated. But for a customer to express disappointment in a experience and then have the person at fault try to make light of it, by defending their awful behavior is unacceptable. He had the nerve to ask " Did you wait a long time?" when I complained. I was floored. How condescending and inappropriate! We all make mistakes, and apology would have been more than enough. However, when he placed my card on the counter after swiping it , and then placed my receipt on the counter, when I handed my card to him after he asked for payment, said all it needed to really. Because he definitely reached out to hand the guy who cut the line his card back, and if I'm remembering correctly, the lady in front of me, too. Great little bagel cafe nudged in the crevices of the beast we know of as the North Avenue Shopping Center. I'm old enough to remember when this place was just a Ben Franklin's and a bowling alley. Anyway, this cafe is a super place to sit and relax. It's small, not a ton of seating but they have it laid out comfortably and the counter area is clean. Ordering is fun as there are a lot of choices: bagels, sandwiches, soup(didn't notice but I can only assume they offer it) and espresso drinks. This is all anyone really needs to have in a bagel cafe. The bagels are good and the ones I ordered (around 11am or so) were fresh and flavorful. The help is quite friendly and they seem to have a good crew of help on this particular Sunday. So I imagine they get a bit busy on the weekends. read more

This is one of my favorite places. Their stuff is always fresh!!! They're open later than everyone plus are friendly. If you're a frequent customer they remember you and acknowledge you. Writing this review because it's important for patrons to know 1) the quality of the products this place offers and 2) the kind of people they'd be supporting with their business. The past couple times I've been here, I tried the "Back to Basics" and "Breakfast Burrito" sandwiches, their only two unoriginal vegetarian options, on bagels. The bagels: they're a step up from Dunkin Donuts, with the real emphasis on a mouthful of bland bread. I'm from the New York area, so I know what a hearty, bready bagel is. This is not that. Today, I bought a bagel sandwich from Willow's instead (their veggie sausage is bomb), and since we were heading northward from Burlington anyway, my boyfriend said he didn't mind getting a bagel from The Bagel Cafe. He buys his bagel sandwich, and while we wait, we sit at a window table and I start to eat mine. The owner, who we'd been watching pace back and forth through the establishment since we'd arrived, suddenly appeared and LOUDLY said, in an attempt to embarrass me, "WHERE IS THAT BAGEL FROM YOU NEED TO LEAVE." My boyfriend explained that he had indeed bought a bagel, and we were just waiting. The entire store goes quiet and heads turn to my table, and he proceeds to make a scene. "WELL IT'S TOO LATE NOW GUESS YOU MIGHT AS WELL FINISH AND THEN GO." I do understand a no-outside-food policy, but please, allow me to list the many ways that a respectable and worthwhile business owner could communicate that in a manner that preserves the dignity of all people involved. As we left, he yelled after us, "Have a wonderful day!!" It's good to see other reviews that indicate this dreadful human being has a reputation, and it's not just me. Go anywhere else: Myer's Bagels, Burlington Bagel Bakery & Café, and Willow's Bagels are a few incredible places with incredible people who brighten their customers' day. Good riddance :) read more

Used to go here ALL the time because we lived closed to it. The owner has always shown anger and discontent for his own employees, and he also treats customers this way- not OK. They used a microwave for everything. They need to invest and start cooking their sandwiches, and other food better. Love the spot and food, but drastic changes need to take place. read more

Recently had a brief business lunch meeting here, greeted as entering by the staff. Ordered an egg salad on an asiago bagel with veggies & provolone, and my husband ordered a BLT also on asiago bagel, both bagels toasted. His BLT did not include any extra veggies or cheese, just optional mayo, and mine included the optional veggies and cheese, but no mayo. I remembered to not order coffee as from a previous visit, it does tend to be very weak or watered down. You can ask for water in a cup, but as it is Burlington's tap water, it is highly chlorinated, so beware. Upon digging in, we found the egg salad to be pretty plain and crumbly, needing more mayo. Be sure to ask for a fork or spoon when ordering to eat the egg that drops when you bite into it, unless you don't mind reassembling or eating your egg salad by hand. Veggies were fresh, and even the tomato had flavor for March in Vermont. The bagel was flavorful, but the toasting was a bit too much, so unless you're looking for a crispy bagel, ask for lightly toasted. Husband's BLT was flavorful, bacon was crispy but still had flavor. Overall, a great place to visit on a sunny day, and would visit again with some slight modifications. read more

In the Old North End area of Burlington in the local shopping center this is a great place for locals and others. Always busy with families, friends young and old. Folks getting take out and eating in. You order your sandwich or menu item at the counter and then pick it up and pay further down. They also do various coffees, lattes etc. Coolers full of drinks are self serve. they serve a wonderful sandwich. It was huge. I had the Turkey BLT that took two hands to hold and eat. My toasted Sesame bagel was delicious. great flavor. The sandwich was delicious with great spicy mustard. Lots of activity on a busy Saturday afternoon. I would like to come back to try some of their other offerings and breakfast items. read more

As a frequent customer I have to say the sandwiches and bagels used to be delicious that said since covid they have gone down hill. I either get a sandwich that's a mess and way to much mayo or you get a sandwich with barely anything on it. Even when specifically asking for a regular amount of mayo it's always over flowing and all over the sandwich or you get the opposite a barely there anything on the bread like my BLT today bread. I have many pictures of these sandwiches in my phone and have showed the staff for them to look at me like ummmm what do you want me to do. I have just become upset with the place and talking to someone does not help they always have an excuse like oh a new employee made the sandwich. Over and over this is my review after me giving them chance after chance. Just disappointed considering I was spending 6-10$ there everyday mostly because they were yummy and mostly because it's the only thing close by to my hone and work.
