I went there with my sister. The hummus appetizer was good. We ordered pizza and it tasted unique; I think they put sugar in the outer crust. It tasted pretty cool at first, but by the 4th or 5th slice, it was a little too much so I stopped eating the outer crust part. It was a pretty neat atmosphere. We sat at the bar near the entrance. We'd arrived maybe around 8:15 or so.
Our waitress did not seem to be good at listening; maybe she was distracted with other thoughts? She seemed angry beneath the surface, but I could tell that the anger was not directed at us---I think she was just going through a hard time in her life now, perhaps. The waitresses/servers are dressed up like dolls and fake---they are not allowed to spread their wings and be themselves there. There was a vibe of unhappiness about them and I think it is because they're in a job they don't like. The focus seemed to be on "how much money can I get from this customer?" instead of taking the time to chat with us for a few moments with an honest smile and a shine in their eyes. To me, this is not a problem secluded to The Grille, but a problem with our society at large. These types of jobs are set up to run counter to what is natural to human beings---that is, we need to move away from "money, money, money" and get back to being loving and kind and caring to others. Stop thinking of customers as greenbacks and start thinking of them as individual human beings.
After we finished our meal, then they had a DJ coming in, so they asked us to move to a table (we were in the DJ's regular spot, I guess). When we made that move into the main area, the music seemed much louder. I'm not sure if this was because we were in the direct line of a speaker (not sure), or if the DJ's music is louder after a certain hour (?), but it made an uncomfortable atmosphere for me.
Before we went there, when my sister told her husband we were going to check out the Grille, he said he'd gone there once, many years ago. He remembers it being very loud. I thought he might be exaggerating, or I was hoping that maybe it wasn't like that any more (after all, some of the reviews here, which I read before going to the Grille, mentioned a change in ownership).
The music was good---all the regular hits from artists like Billy Joel, Journey, Kansas, and Aerosmith---but after we moved to the table, I felt like I could no longer focus on the conversation with my sister (I only had one drink the entire evening, so it wasn't the alcohol) and I felt like I had to scream at the top of my lungs when it was my turn to speak, so I could be heard over this loud music. That feeling of needing to scream to be heard eventually wore me down and I gave up trying to talk. I felt frustrated, annoyed, and unhappy. It was just way too loud in there! I just wanted to leave. We kept waiting and waiting and W A I T I N G for the waitress to bring our check, and it only compounded my frustration. Finally, I went up to the bar and asked her for it. Maybe it's the normal procedure to ask instead of wait? But I thought that other places usually bring us the check when we're done with our meals (?). I dunno---I'm not really into the "bar scene." She didn't even come to pick it up then, when we were ready with our cash and credit card. We had to track her down again. Ugh. It just came across as being uncaring, inconsiderate, distracted, unfriendly. We finally ended up leaving around 10:30 pm or so.
I'd give this place an average rating because nothing really stands out. There seemed to be nothing special about The Grille; it's just another place. The Grille kind of just fades into the cookie-cutter pile of restaurant-bars (of which Brunswick has a crap-ton!). I won't be going back because of the obnoxiously loud music and it is not a vegetarian-friendly place, but then again we're talking about Bruns-tucky, after all---it's not like it's a posh place in California or NYC. To me, there is a difference between a place that's willing to leave off the meat, versus a place that serves whole and complete vegetarian dishes that were never meant to have meat in the first place. The Grille seems to be the former.
Or, I would only consider going back if they had some sort of special event like a Singles' Night, since I'm single and looking.
At any rate, I'm glad we went once just to check it out, because I like visiting new places and I like gaining personal experience so I know first-hand what it's like. I suggest you go there at least once, if you're considering trying it, so you can gain your own personal experience. read more
