A foodie destination in eastern Montana--great pork bbq and creative brunch dishes all served in a historic landmark building that is totally casual. I had heard and read about The Backporch and wanted to get there in the summer--just made it this fall. Saturday at noon--you would expect lunch and brunch but with short staff brunch was the only option. Big D. But the brunch OMG. The huevos rancheros were perfectly prepared with a plate full of moist well smoked pork Barbeque. A feast for a reasonable price. Same for the breakfast sandwich--generous serving doesn't give enough credit to the quantity and quality. Can't wait to try the brisket. read more

We heard such great things about this place, previously a James beard runner-up! Well not today. Had some dry brisket, cold pulled pork and a raw steak! Told the server about the steak and she just looked at us like we were being rude, no care about the quality of the food. For $22 we can feed myself, husband and our oldest daughter. Their helpings are plentiful and super good. The white bbq is my favorite and the classic one is my husbands favorite. They put some sort of white horseradish tasting sauce in our order last time, don't know what it was but it was great as well. We get The Backporch once a month as a treat and they haven't let us down yet. read more

My wife and I dined here for lunch after she raved over the food and the amazing owners. As we entered the building the space was laid out nicely with roomy accommodations and the bar for ordering coffee and pastry/BBQ at the far end. The owner took our order as he remembers my wife and the fact she has dietary restrictions. "No Gluten" We both ordered pit beef with a side of slaw. I added a smoked spices sausage and my wife got the roast beet salad. The Salad dressing normally has gluten which we were informed of and he whipped up a special vinaigrette for her on the spot with out being prompted. Service phenomenal... Now to the food The smoked spices sausage was good with a snappy casing and mild heat. The pit beef was sliced thin but a good portion which came with homemade yogurt horseradish sauce yum! They make a variety of bbq sauces that I tried three of. First classic which was savory sweet and tangy a great classic sauce. Second espresso which packed a true punch of coffee notes and color. Last was the Carolina sauce which tantalizes my taste buds as I write this review. Mustard based with bright hints of heat and vinegar and a touch of sweetness. Wow I must have more. The coleslaw was my final bite with crisp veggies and a delicious dill cream sauce. Overall this performed great. Go enjoy this hidden gem and get the Carolina sauce if you love mustard. read more

We were traveling in MT. and saw this place on yelp and so stopped for lunch on Sunday. WE went in - no place to sit, because it seemed they were having a lady play guitar and sing and so had an audience. We went to the counter to order and were completely ignored. We stood there wondering what to do and then some people left. We ordered and the order taker was completely rude and disinterested in being an employee. There was the cook and him and that is all working. They needed more help. I got the pulled pork sandwich which could have been so much better. It was a good amount of meat, but it came with 3 pickle chips and nothing else. If you want bar b q sauce they have 6 kinds in squirt bottles that is ice cold. Not great to put cold sauce on a warm sandwich. Others in my group got the bar b q salad and tacos and they both really liked theirs. I recommend getting those things instead of the sandwich. The coleslaw is really hard to eat as it is in huge chunks. If I lived nearby I would probably return, but order something other than a sandwich. The owner needs to improve service greatly. Get someone in to take orders that wants to be there. Also, the lady singing was so loud it hurt my ears. She needs to turn down the mike a bunch. We all felt the same way - way way way too loud. Also, if you are going to have someone in to sing add some seating, so people coming in to eat can sit too. People watching the lady sing took all the seating. read more
