Another amazing cooking class. I attended with a friend this time and we got through the entire class without burning anything! We had a blast. I will say that the pace was a bit quicker than my last class, as there was much more to get done, but we kept up, giggles and all. The environment was comfortable, and the staff's attention to detail created a relaxing and enjoyable evening. We didn't have to overthink anything; we could just go with the flow. Everything was prepared for us from start to finish. After cooking, we sat, ate, and were pleasantly surprised to find that, after guessing the right amount of seasoning for our produce and meat, we ended up seasoning everything perfectly to our taste. What a fun and wonderful experience cooking in an authentic working Chefs kitchen ! There are two kitchens both so beautiful .The dining area as well is upscale and lovely . The shop itself is amazing with so many cooking and kitchen items that you can purchase. I've taken several classes here and as an amateur cook and baker each class was interesting and a learning experience . My first class was making Cavatelli pasta , something I have never made before , what a great class and it came out so yummy ! When you arrive you go into the dining area and before you begin cooking there are complimentary appetizers and wine served! It was so nice ! For my next class I wanted to take something easy and fun so I did the mozzarella and pizza class. That particular class had about 40 people attending .All the chefs were great and kept everyone engage! Recently I attended the class .. Scarpinocc pasta with brown butter and sage sauce and lemon Panacotta but after arriving we learned the initial menu slightly changed . Instead we made ravioli with impastata cheese and fresh chopped tomatoes and basil , also Vanilla honey Panacotta. It all turned out wonderful. When first arriving we had complimentary mimosas and appetizers of riceballs and chicken. This being my first time making ravioli I was very excited ! It was an amazing time and everything we made came out delicious! Along with our meal we were also served a delicious ,freshly made salad with feta cheese ! I was very excited to experience the Babylon Mercantile this evening. Unfortunately, it was not as I expected. Because I was a single they had me cook with another person which felt a bit strange to me. were both mixing biscuit batter with our hands and battering chicken in the same bowl. I didn't really like that. I feel if you come on your own, you should be able to have your own workspace. There was a lady across from that was cooking on her own so why I had to cook with someone else didn't make any sense. We made fried chicken and at the end we were each given two pieces. Each piece was to be a thigh and a leg. The portion that was on my plate was so small. It was barely the size of a chicken wingette. I think if you're having us pay $125 the very least you could do is have normal pieces. The overall experience was a bit lackluster. read more

We were walked through making the most delicious gnocchi by an extremely professionally and experienced chef and support staff. The place is operating room clean, neat and efficient. You will prepare your meal under professional supervision from scratch base ingredients. The pro staff walks you through each ingredient and takes the time to explain the food science to make the perfect meal. You will also receive instruction and utilize some of the finest high end appliances and commercial grade kitchen equipment. The class is appropriate for all levels of users. The staff are not only pros in the kitchen but great presenters and teachers. The end result was some of the best Gnocchi that i have ever had. I wouldn't be surprised if some grandmas get upset with them for giving away the secret to super fantastic gnocchi! Highly recommended! This was my first visit to The Babylon Mercantile, and I was not disappointed! The front of the shop, is retail store...cooking supplies and whatnot. But what happens in the back kitchen...makes this place so much fun! I have always wanted to take a cooking class and I'm so happy I chose The Babylon Mercantile! I'm addicted. Chef Chris made a intimidating recipe of beef Wellington seem not so difficult! (I mean let's be real, it is not so simple haha). I have taken three classes here so far with way more to come in the new year! Can't recommend this place enough for cooking classes. I have taken a class both by myself and two with a friend! It's a perfect for a friends date, romantic date, mother/daughter, etc. I was also nervous to take my first class by myself but Chef Chris made me super comfortable and it was a fantastic experience. They walk you through every step and the whole experience is very hands on. I've taken many cooking classes around the world and it's amazing to have such a great place right here on LI! What an amazing night! We celebrated my 50th birthday here with a cooking class. We had such a great time. The staff made everything easy from booking the party through cleaning up at the end. I had one guest with a gluten sensitivity and another with a separate health issue. Debbie and Chef Chris worked with me to craft a delicious menu that worked for everyone. Chef Chris, Debbie and Christine answered all my questions while being knowledgable, patient and pleasant. The storefront and kitchen are beautiful. I've taken classes at other facilities and this is the nicest by far. The space is bright, pretty and immaculate. Chef Chris made the class so much fun. He is a talented chef and has a great personality. He peppered his demonstration with interesting facts and helpful tricks. I love to cook and learned quite a lot. He had a great rapport with our group and kept it light while still teaching us. One of the main reasons I picked The Mercantile was because they had a large table where we were able to relax and enjoy ourselves while we ate. After we cooked we all had a lovely meal together. Everyone had such a good time I had to gently remind people when the party was over so the staff could go home. Finally, the food. I opted to add some additional starters and they were delicious. I'm glad I added them. We began my party at 6:30 pm. We had salad somewhere in the middle but didn't sit down to dinner until around 8:45 pm so the extra starters helped. The salad was prepared for us and was absolutely delicious. Everyone raved about it. We enjoyed the meal we prepared (chicken piccata, roasted potatoes, broccoli rabe and zabaglione) and almost everyone took home leftovers because the portions were large. We were 19 people. More than one person said to me that this was an amazing party. Some guests were trying to get a couples night together and another friend wants to have her party here. I could not have asked for a better celebration. read more

Had an absolute blast with friends last week taking a cooking class with Chef Chris - we truly can't say enough good things about him and our experience at the Mercantile. He created such a fun, comfortable atmosphere and was so personable and engaging with everyone in the class. This is the 3rd class my wife and I have taken with Chef Chris and we always leave there talking about what a great time we had and how much we learned. He went out of his way to put together a separate side dish of focaccia bread after my wife informed him she's expecting and couldn't eat the provided tuna appetizer - something that he definitely did not have to do but we were incredibly appreciative for. On a side note, the Babylon Mercantile itself is absolutely gorgeous and the way they set up their cooking classes with various pauses and time to sit on their patio to drink and chat makes for such an enjoyable experience. The food is always amazing and the social aspect to the class always gets us smiling. I wholeheartedly recommend Chef Chris and the Babylon Mercantile to anyone looking to have a great night out with family, friends, or on a date night. read more

Last night we attended a Chefs Counter Culinary Experience and it did not disappoint. Chef Chris is an amazing chef and his presentation is flawless. He has a top notch crew working with him. This is my second time taking a cooking class at this store. The class cost me $95, and for that price one would think that you would make your own dish. That however is not the case. Each person shares the dish. I guess the mercantile figured out a way to cheat the customer!! If you come with a friend and can be paired off together your led to believe this is fun. But their the ones gaining! Once again I was paired off with a child. The child that licked each spatula, spoon, and fingers and smeared it all over the food. Then you're supposed to take half of what you both made..... really?? I can't imagine that the DOH approved this place. No one even washes their hands. If you're into wasting your money then go, but Sur la table 100x better. And much more professional. You also are the only person handling your dish/food, they don't cheat you out of what you paid for. read more

I went to my first class yesterday on baking croissant with my sister. It was both enjoyable and informative. Chef Chris is very knowledgeable and not only shows you how to make the croissants but teaches about good kitchen habits and skills as well. If you're a fan of Jacques Pepin you know what I mean, it's the little details that make all the difference. The products they have in the store are good quality and Stephen, who was the sous chef, booked our next class and rang up our purchases, was very helpful and knowledgeable as well. It was a very cool environment in a dream kitchen with tons of supplies and a dreamy chef to match. It started with sitting around the table with a charcuterie to pick at while meeting classmates. They then bring you into the kitchen explain the recipe the supplied and begin to guide you through cooking with lots of tips,tricks and laughs. They gave us a quick break while our salmon baked and I spent mine looking through their gorgeous selection of curated kitchen supplies. Our dinners came out delicious and we left with so much new knowledge and more importantly something new to mix up our date night routine. I contacted them to inquire about a fundraiser and while the owner seemed great and receptive, whoever got back to me was in no rush to provide me information and wanted to get back to me after a few weeks, when I asked for a more speedy response I was met with annoyance. When that woman got back to me she left me a voicemail and just simply said that they can't do the at the price I had suggested- which is totally fine- what threw me off is that the woman who got back to me didn't offer a counter price and the voicemail she left seemed more annoyed than someone who was interested in organizing it at all... just doesn't seem like good customer service which is disappointing. I will be looking elsewhere and hopefully they figure out communication... Wish them the best of luck and if anything just wanted to support a local business and communicate with them to reach something that would suit both of our needs... sad to see some businesses just don't seem to have the customer service skills needed to negotiate pricing and make customers feel heard and respected. read more
