The conference itself was wonderful, but I was not a big fan of National Harbor. I didn't have a car, so I took the metro and bus to get to National Harbor. I walked around the area that afternoon, and it took less than two hours for me to see everything. This area is very commercial and planned, with little local flair or character. I see this mentioned in reviews from 2010-2011; well, it is still the case in 2026. The monument to our armed services was inspirational, and I found a wonderful Black-owned bookstore called Mahogany Books. But, most businesses were high-end chains. There's a pharmacy for basic needs, but most restaurants are expensive and no grocery stores are within walking distance. Thankfully, Potbelly is there for us plebes to grab a sandwich, and Mahogany Books serves delicious coffee drinks. I had plenty to do with the conference over the next three days, so it wasn't a boring trip. The bus service comes every 30 minutes or you can Uber/Lyft to a metro station like Alexandria and go into the city. On the second night of our conference, I ended up going into Alexandria with some friends, and we went to a local pizza restaurant. The next night, I visited a local Greek restaurant in Alexandria with other friends. If you're attending a conference here, do stay at a nearby hotel for convenience and also visit Mahogany Books. Otherwise, I would not spend much time at National Harbor.

Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge - Gods work :))

This bridge is notable relative to various other crossings of the Potomac as being one that is…read morerarely backed up. The bizarre intersections after you get to the Virginia or Maryland side sometimes are, but the bridge itself, with its several lanes for local and travel through vehicles each, generally moves. Technically, it is a drawbridge, but it would take quite a ship to require it to lift and I have never seen it happen. Also important is that there is the ability to walk across the bridge (or bike) by a decent sized path that leads between Alexandria and National Harbor. During daytime, you'll want some sun protection, but I've also done it at night while staying at National Harbor and it was an experience.

If you really want to know about this Woodrow Wilson Bridge thing, it depresses the hell out of me,…read moreit really does. It sits out there over the Potomac, connecting Maryland and Virginia, which sounds like the kind of place guys I went to military school would talk about like it's the center of the universe just to sound big-time. It's a bascule drawbridge, which just means it opens up in the middle so huge, pretentious boats can slide through like they own the place. People get all excited because it has a big pedestrian and bike path on it. You see people riding their little bicycles on it as you drive over it, looking all grand and proper, like they're accomplishing something momentous. It depresses me. They build this massive, modern slab of concrete with big white arches underneath and put a giant, fancy stone monument right at the entrance named after president Wilson. And underneath, it's just thousands of cars stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic, full of guys in suits driving home to talk about their office jobs. The worst part is looking at the water underneath it. Whenever I look at a river like that, all I can think about is Central Park and where the damn ducks go when the water freezes over in the winter. Nobody on this bridge gives a damn about the ducks. They just care about getting across as fast as they can so they can buy something stupid at dinner or sit in a movie theater or go to a show, snobby stuff. It's big a n d useful, it's also really loud when you roll the windows down. I'll give it four stars out of five, mostly just because the river didn't ask for any of this concrete nonsense and did absolutely nothing to deserve these noisy people crammed over it.

I can't speak for the whole park as I have only really seen one area of the park on each visit. Picnic area B and I are very familiar, and I have come to like this part of the park. Maybe one day I will make it back out here and explore more, but this review at this time is for what I have experienced thus far. Picnic area B is a set of areas sandwiched between Battery Meigs and Battery Humphreys. A great area to have a big gathering as both ends have bathroom facilities for use and those can be very useful. The one thing that you do not realize is how close you are to the water. No matter where you are in this park you are a very short walk to the water. Picnic area B is fairly close to both the Potomac River and Piscataway Creek. There are also trails that will connect areas and take you along the waterways. Specifically for Area B, there is ample parking for any amount of people you may invite to an event. It is shaded, but not as shaded as you would think. Throughout the day, if you want to be in the shade you will either have to move or bring a way to keep the sun away. If you do plan an event here, be sure to clean up after yourself. Do not leave anything behind as this is a park that is patrolled and it is your duty to pick up after yourself.

We came upon the Contrabands and Freedmen Memorial Cemetery on a walk from Jones Point Park. The haunting sculpture on the grounds drew us in to examine the inscriptions and gravestones. Among those who are buried here are individuals who tried to run from the horrors of enslavement or who died shortly after the Civil War. The bronze plaque reads that many died of disease and starvation. Half of those buried in this cemetery were children. Because African American individuals were not allowed to be buried in the main cemeteries, the names of those who perished were not recorded on the stones. Many of the markers that were later added simply read "child." We cannot erase the mistakes of how we have treated our fellow human beings. It is important not to forget the evils of slavery and the impact it has had on millions around the world. This final resting place is a powerful reminder that we must always work toward a better world for all people.

Contrabands and Freedmen Memorial Cemetery is a 2014 memorial on the original cemetery founded in 1864 as the burial grounds of people who escaped slavery and found refuge in Union-controlled Alexandria. For five years, people (more than half children) were buried in the cemetery. In fact, members of the U.S. Colored Troops were first buried here until it was demanded they be buried in the Soldiers' Cemetery with all other Civil War soldiers. It became the first civil rights protest in the city and they won! Fast forward less than one hundred years and the cemetery disappeared from city maps. A gas station and later an office building were built on top of the cemetery. Then a group of activists convinced the city to buy the land and build a memorial on top protecting the site. It opened in 2014. The memorial itself includes a statue and an area that tells the stories and honors those buried here and the plight of Black Alexandrians. It's a must-visit site that many unfortunately miss.

I did get there early and park and use a ride share to get to Alexandria for dinner. Parking was free because I signed up for the membership that is free, and in my profile settings I listed my make and model with license plate. The emails sent before the event were packed with useful information to help you navigate your evening, and the time leading up to the event. The property is very clean, and well organized. All the staff I encountered were very helpful, polite and hard working. The casino area was busy here and there but not over whelming.
