I had written a review back in 2019 that was not favorable for the Aviary when they were in Cauley Square. After visiting their new location (which is really the pre-Cauley Square location), I am happy to say I have a completely different impression of the store. I went there to buy some supplies for my bird and took the opportunity to look around. They have numerous cages outdoors in their gardens with various types of birds which were not for sale. In the nursery they had a great variety of birds ranging from budgies to parrots. Their cage room had a large variety of cages and stands. They also have a big variety of toys, foods, and supplies for birds of all sizes. The location was clean and employees were extremely helpful. I will definitely be back. read more

I came here and was very sad to see the conditions these birds are living in. The birds are kept in tiny cages with no space to fly around and without any toys or enrichment. They all looked depressed and some are ripping out their feathers from the stress of being kept in a cage rather than being free to fly around in nature. Located in historic Cauley Square the Aviary Burd Shop first opened in 1981. It is now the oldest and largest bird store in South Florida. Although I wasn't shopping for an exotic bird I am the mom of a parakeet named Hedwig so I was very interested in checking out this business on a recent trip to Cauley Square. In addition to rare breeds of birds you won't find in your average pet store they also sell everything you need to care for them food, cages, toys, books, and health items. Services they provide include boarding and microchipping. I fell in love with all of their birds. They had so much personality. I got to see a pink cockatoo for the first time. I especially loved visiting the nursery. Some of the birds were several thousand dollars. If you are looking for a particular breed they can accommodate you. It is worth checking out their website where they offer forums and coupons. A $40 yearly membership will entitle you to 20 percent off birds and products. Even though I was just window shopping the staff was extremely kind and accommodating. I would love to own an exotic bird one day but I don't have the time to devote to it now. If you ever need a bird or bird supplies, this place is wonderful. My experience: I got a hand-raised baby cockatiel from them. He wasn't fully weaned, so they let me visit him as much as I wanted to socialize him. After I took him, they helped me continue to monitor him & have been there supporting me with his care ever since. They even helped me set up his cage so that his branches, bowls & toys are in a way that makes sense to him. They offer a lifetime of grooming & weighing. Had a terrible experience today going to get my birds wings clipped and DNA tested, as I asked for pricing before services where done. owner was very rude when requesting proof of purchase I forgot to bring the paper and owner rudely was emphasizing that they provided me with one which I had a picture of but because of her attitude and approach towards me it was very off putting and made me question why should I even give money towards a business with an owner that is rude and accusatory to their client. as I was trying to explain that she was giving an off putting attitude she walked away and told me to get the fuck out... what a horrible way to represent your own business and treat ur clients who paid $400 for a bird from you. I've been coming here for about 10 years, and my parents have been coming here since the 80s. Their passion about birds is so evident. We've brought blue and gold macaws, a lovebird, and our newest cockatiel (bought recently at the aviary) to have wings and nails clipped, and the staff has always been so helpful and knowledgeable. I brought my bird here to get her nails clipped and l left the store with my bird lifeless. I've taken her to Simbads and never here. Although hindsight is 20/20, it is a big regret that I brought Casper to this store because not only that I lost my pet bird but I lost my companion, my buddy. They said that the stress from holding the bird with a towel caused Casper to have a heart attack. That this happens all the time. Though, what did they do differently that took her life away when I've been going to Simbads in Gables, and leaving the store with the bird still alive? My point is, Casper has been going to Simbads for clippings, ever since we got her. We got her a year and 8 months ago. She's basically still a baby. Still learning words. And to be told that it's normal to have your bird get a routine "hair cut" and be dead after. Wow... What's worse? They said Casper just passed out when the old lady with short blond hair was holding her neck sideways with Casper's body facing the other way. She said she "passed out the bad way" I was looking at my brother confused and when we looked at Casper she was lifeless. They barely even tried to revive her. They were firm that she's gone. Didn't give us a place to bring her to an AV vet. NOTHING. So then, my brother and I took Casper and went to a nearest animal clinic. The nearest one was 2 miles away, I performed CPR on Casper while my brother hurries to go to the clinic just to find out that they only neuters. We asked them where to go when we got there, and they gave us the address to go to Bravo Animal Clinic. Unfortunately, we were too late. When we went back to this store to get some closure on what happened to my bird they screamed over us, telling us that it's absolutely normal to have your bird die because of a routine "hair cut" the owner Patricia Lyon yells over my mom and when I knew it was getting out of hand I pulled out my phone and that's when she started to lay her hands on us. Pushing us,slapping and grabbing my phone. I almost dropped my bird on the floor because of this 6 foot tall OWNER was busy assaulting me and my mom. Eventually when we starting telling her to stop assaulting us and it's not right, she pushes us out to the door telling my mom who speaks proper English to "speak English" and that we are here "illegally". If you guys love your precious pet birds, please bring them else where. I'd hate to have another person who loves and care about their bird be hurt and feel the loss we are feeling right now. read more

Wow we really were amaze with the aviary, their birds are so healthy and friendly. We were there to buy supplies and ended up falling in love with a Indigo Ringneck which eats out of our hands and his colors are very healthy. The staff not to mention are great and very helpful they were very informative and followed up with a phone call after we purchased the ringneck. Out daughter has a quaker and she brought it there to get trim wings and nails they were very compassionate. Definitely will make it our go to plsce for supplies and possible addition to the family. You can visit with your animals too we brought our Cockatoo and look forward soon visitng with our two macaws as well as Prince the ringneck. We have been coming here for over 13 years. Have bought 6 birds from them and we do everything here, board (birds are in a private room and no customer has access to it) Clip wings, nails and beaks and have never had an issue. I order bird seed for my Parrotlet from The Aviary and I live in New York, so I have it shipped. They charged me $22 for three containers of seed and then another $22 to ship it. I almost didn't do it, by my Bugsy loves it, so I did it. Then when it arrived, I saw that it only cost $17.25 to ship it, but they won't refund my $4.75 in shipping. They even reused an old box, so they didn't even have to pay for that. It's bad enough that we have to pay so much to begin with, but then they over-charge for shipping and do not respond to my emails when I ask for my almost $5 to be refunded!!! Times are tough and money does not grow on trees!!! What they did was not right and this is not the first trouble that I've had with them. My first order they charged me and didn't send what I asked for and never refunded me then either. If you can buy from the store, good for you, but don't order from these people, they will cheat you!!! read more

The most horrific pet experience of my life I had with this business! In 2014, I took my bird to them for boarding in perfect health. When I went to pick her up a week later, the employee that helped me at first told me that she "was" going to call me because she had noticed for "like 2 days now" that my bird was sick. When I went to get my bird, she was falling over to the point that she was unable to perch. Another employee who was helping me with the checkout, told me to hurry up and run to a vet that she recommended me to and wished me luck. I rushed over to the vet and, unfortunately, she died when I got there. The following day, I called Patricia Lyon, the person in charge, and she basically called me a liar. She said that there was no reason for her employee to tell me that she had noticed that my bird was sick for about 2 days because that employee did not work in that area. She even put the employee on the phone who, FLAT OUT, told me that she did not say that to me, at which point, I told her to put the owner back on the phone because I was, absolutely, NOT going to waste my time with someone who is flat out lying to me. I am assuming that the reason why this employee lied to her boss was for fear of losing her job, of course. The owner really did not care WHAT the employee told me, she was just chose to not be on my side since she is smart enough to know that doing so would spell 'trouble' for her. The only thing that Patricia offered me for my HUGE loss was a bird priced at 1/2 off, which meant, absolutely, no loss to her business and, hopefully, shut me up. That felt like a slap in the face to me. Besides, another bird would not have made up for 20 years of having my loving pet. The best business decision she could have made at the time, given this delicate situation, was to offer me a bird for FREE, which would have meant pennies for her, IF that. I would not have sold myself so cheaply, therefore, I would not have accepted her offer, but she did not know that. Patricia showed no remorse for my very painful experience at all. All she worried about was defending her employee (actually, her business) and that was it. My being a loyal customer of that business from way back during the previous owners' time, made no difference to her at all. In conclusion, I cannot, with certainty, say that this business caused whatever killed my pet. They could have, however, avoided it. Their responsibility, as the business that I hired to care for my pet while I was away, was to contact me as soon as they noticed my bird was sick which was, according to their own employee, two days PRIOR to my picking her up. Why that employee did not take it upon herself to call me, I will never know. Had SHE, or ANYONE in that business, called me, I would have done whatever needed to be done for her to have received IMMEDIATE care at that very moment to save her life. Had I left my pet alone at my home for that week, her chances of survival would have been much, much greater than the chances she had at this "boarding" place, thanks to their lack of caregiving. Needless to say, I have not stepped foot in that business again and never plan to either. They do not deserve my business and, frankly, I do not think that they deserve to be open FOR business. Anyone that I come across that I know owns a bird, I always ask them where they go for bird supplies and boarding and I make sure to warn them about my devastating experience with this business. I, CERTAINLY, do NOT want anyone else going through the same ordeal that I did. read more

If you are a seasoned bird person or new to it all, this is where you want to go. It's a little south of mainstream Miami, but well worth it if you are serious about your pet bird(s). They used to be located in Cauley Square, but were wiped away by Hurricane Andrew. Now they are on the other side of the highway and a little further down. The Aviary is known for their quality and selection of birds. These are not factory farmed, mass produced parakeets. Most birds are hatched and raised on the premises. Some are even rescue birds. The staff is knowledgeable and caring. They offer services such as nail and wing clipping for those a little squeamish of doing it themselves. (I don't advocate the wing clipping, but for those that want it, they do it) They have a full selection of birds ranging from canaries to parakeets, to the most exotic of parrots and macaws and more. Their prices are not the cheapest, but are on par for a reputable breeder. You will get what you pay for, they back up their reputation and have guarantees on their birds and are always happy to help you with any questions or advice you may need. They also sell cages, feed, books, accessories, anything you might want for your bird. Even if you're not in the market for a new pet, The Aviary is a cool place to stop by and walk around and visit with the birds, if you're in the area. They birds out front by the front door love attention and will talk to you and put their heads out to have you rub them. You can make a day of it, by visiting Coral Castle also (since it's in the area) and the zoo. read more
