    "Lobby", lovely space!

I am always on the search for a workout I don't hate, which I thought would be forever in vain. But so far, I am really loving The Aviary and aerial fitness! First of all, you have to take the Intro to Aerial class ($10 with "yelp!" promo code) before any other classes. I was nervous and unsure of what to expect, but I left having done a handful of aerial tricks and feeling more flexible! So since then, I've been to two Fly Fit 1 classes. Both the instructors I've had, Cheryl and Jane, are talented, helpful, and pretty hilarious too. I also got to meet Christine, the owner, who is just as fit and inviting. Fly Fit 1 is a challenging yet fun combo of strengthening exercises, aerial tricks, stretching, and a cardio blast that incorporate the fabric for both support and resistance. The classes have gone by so fast for me, I'm shocked. Usually at fitness classes I'm counting the seconds and drafting my will and testament in my head. Other details: free street parking along 2nd and 6th, and sometimes I have to walk a block. Class packages are reasonable, and more economical the more you buy (avg ~$16/class, vs. $20 per class). The space is modern and chic. I just wish there were more mirrors and I hope they bring in some fans soon! PS - message me and I can refer you!

I have been going to this studio for almost a year and I honestly have nothing but amazing things to say about this place. It was because of the aviary that I discovered my true love and passion for aerial arts. I have seen so much improvement in my upper body strength and flexibility over the course of less than a year and it has been incredible to see! The workouts really do condition you to become a better aerialist if that's your goal, otherwise the workouts are simply a fun, challenging, and non traditional workout. Never boring that's for sure! The studio itself is a gorgeous space that has exposed limestone walls and big decorative beautiful mirrors lining the front of the studio space. It is simply gorgeous! The Instructors- one of my favorite things about the instructors is that they all are very unique, each specializing in different areas of fitness. You get something different from every instructor and it helps to mix up your workout simply by taking a class from a different instructor. The community- one of the biggest things that keeps me coming back to this studio is the community. We are all extremely supportive of one another and I actually feel like I have made some really incredible friends as a result of going to the aviary. The atmosphere is different than most studios as those of us who have been going to the studio for quite a while are extremely welcoming to newbies, ensuring that they feel welcomed and part of the aviary community. I could go on and on about this place! But, overall it's an incredible studio and I highly recommend checking it out!

This past month I did my bday party here with a handful of girlfriends. It was so fun!!! The Place is beautiful, so clean and our instructor was so great. She was kind, warm and explained things very well so we all could get into the poses. I can't wait to go back

I must say that I love this place and its instructors. I bought a deal on Groupon and gather some friends to attend one of their "fly fit" class (50 mins of cardio and fabric work that works your core and body) with Megan. I must say, my friends and I were not prepared because we got our a$s kicked with all the pulsing exercises our instructor had us do. This place is a great place if you are a first timer, like us because they go through things step by step and allow you to attempt the moves while two people walk around and supervise. They have other class options too and "fly fit I" was like their "beginners" course. They allow all ages and genders to attend and I feel that this would be a great place to learn the ropes (no pun intended) for beginners. At the end of the day my glutes, core, and arms were completely sore, but it left me wanting more because I love a good challenge and getting those tougher moves on the fabrics is very exhilarating. The place is overall friendly, clean, and accommodating for everyone (water is provided but don't forget to bring a bottle to keep by your feet). They even have a bowl of hair ties at the door for your emergency hair tie needs. Don't forget! No metals, zippers, or jewelry that can snag the fabric!

I have found that I burn about 400 calories in a Fly Fit 1 class and nearly 600 in the Cardio Hip Hop class.

The instructors she had were really encouraging, which made a big difference for my soft-spoken kiddo. I noticed that on days she went to class, she slept better and her overall mood improved. Since a lot of sports and physical activities for kids tend to be competitive, which isn't really her thing, Fly Freak has been a great alternative. If you're looking for a way for your child to move around that also helps with regulation, I definitely recommend giving Fly Freak a try!

There is a strong sense of community community at Fly Freak - students and staff both are so accepting and encouraging. I love how everybody cheers when someone does a trick for the first time! I love chair dance (shout out to Kit!), aerial yoga (all the teachers for this are phenomenal) and Sling (my go to teachers are Clara, Christy and Hayley, but I've never had a instructor I didn't like!). I also love the workshops and special events - self defense classes, guardian and kiddo classes, sound baths and my personal favorite, photo shoots! If you're looking for a new obsession or even just want to try something different, you won't regret going to Fly Freak.

Gym class for me was trying to stealth to the back of the line until class ran out. I was not, and still am not, terribly coordinated. But, Aerial arts seemed like a great way to build core, and a pretty unique hobby to boot. First day of class, we trained on three apparatuses: web (basically rope from gym class); tissue (sort of like climbing on mom's curtains); and trapeze (at about 4.5' rather than atop a giant circus tent). There's no slow move into Aerial arts: we will get strong and do circus. (Xelia's motto: Get strong, Have fun, Do Circus) Yesterday was session 4 of the 10-week session. I'm sore today and likely will be for the next few days. I left class yesterday accomplishing moves I couldn't do at my last class. I finished moves I struggled with at the beginning of last night's class. That is worth all the sore muscles today. Classes at Xelia's are meant to be taken on repeat. Session I is a mix of new students and returning. We rotate in small groups among 3 coaches who spot us and offer encouragement. It's physically demanding, and if you're like me, not too keen on heights, pushes comfort zones. I am excited re-evaluate my limitations as I progress.
