About a month back I took my car in for engine trouble. After several days and several issues popping up I was left with a bill of 1,300. They wanted to replace the ball bearings as well, but that would've been another 800 and I didn't want to spend too much all at once. I was already spending a months pay for me on it. Fast forward to now and my car is literally worthless. The underside has rusted and rotted away, verging on falling apart completely. I can't even get a tow truck driver to take it in because they're worried that will just make it worse. It's wild to me that after having my car for several days and having found several other issues, they just somehow didn't notice this. I spent 1,300 dollars on repairs and they somehow didn't notice the one thing that has killed my car. They should've noticed it when they had it, and then maybe I'd have 1,300 more dollars to burn on a new car. read more

After searching ten different new and used automobile dealers, up to 100 miles away, I found the best deal possible in what could be termed my own backyard. I would suggest that you could save a lot of time, possibly money by visiting Lawrence Auto Clinic and Sales in Cambria. IL. I found Tony Lawrence to be an honest, upfront, personable human being who in his words "We sell good vehicles at a reasonable price and will not sell junk". Honda CR-V EX I purchased from Tony was as good as any dealer's featured front row late model used car..spotless and in excellent condition. Hopefully, I will be finished looking at a car purchase for myself for a decade but if my daughters or grandchildren need a good used vehicle at a fair price I'll suggest they visit or call Tony to see what he has on his lot first. The review is long overdue, but trust me when I say THE AUTO SHOP deserves every word I am typing! I found this shop by researching online, as I usually do when I am in a new place and don't know anyone who can make a referral. When I stopped by to inquire about if someone could fix the problems I was having with my car, I was immediately impressed with the "homey" atmosphere created just inside the doors of the shop. It's like walking back in time. There's an eclectic mix of memorabilia scattered about and strategically placed. A few arm chairs a posted for customers to sit comfortably, and just to the left as you open the door is the desk, behind which sits the always smiling Jeremy. Here is where I should mention that this is a proud local family founded, owned, and operated business. The late Mr. Steve Rennison, the patriarch of the family, started The Auto Shop of Carbondale as a legacy for his family, and boy is it ever! Mother Marie Rennison and some of her children (Stephanie, Jeremy, and Jodie) carry on the legacy from her late husband. I was immediately greeted with professionalism and kindness, put on the schedule, and my car was back to me in no time. They have a shuttle service if you need it, and they are very great about communicating with you. One of the most impressive features to me, and one that I have never seen with any other auto shop, is an instant update on the process of your service as it is happening. It was not like I dropped my car off and then just picked it up and was told what they did later. Oh no! I got emails/texts stating what was found and was asked how I wanted to proceed. Boom! Real time customer service. On a personal note, the Rennison's represent something extra special to me. I have been battling illness for a while, and at the time I took my car in for service, it was becoming visible. They treated me with such kindness and sincerity at a time when I really needed it, especially being so far from family. When you own a business and can still be human behind the counter, that's really something. worst service one can ever experience in transparency!! please!!!! please!!! do not do business with this shop. hidden fees, price gouging, disrespect. was lied to . tried to settle up for services that were not necessary but sister refused to take my card. was told to speak to jeremy when i just wanted to be done. that was a joke and now im forced to drive another 40 miles to remedy a situation since jeremy just had more lies. now i have to drive another 40 miles on my own time and dollar to remedy a situation that i wanted done yesterday and go elsewhere this guy jeremy and his family just want to gouge you and alter your life. i was done and finally gave up and said ill just pay my bill and get my car and be done but he went on and on.!!!! i now have fear even getting my car and will have police accompany me out of fear so i can just pay for unapproved services and be gone. i plan to have filming or police present when i pay for and take car out of fear of them refusing to take my payment and release my car to me yesterday scary!!! please do not put your hard earned dollar or sanity at risk for dealing with this predatory shop. read all the reviews of others read more

PLEASE READ BEFORE TAKING YOUR VEHICLE HERE!! I've had several interactions with this business, and all of them have been terrible. Their turnaround time is very slow due to the lack of technicians and they lie to their customers. They charged me for a coolant tank replacement and I picked up my vehicle. Needless to say, I didn't make it 15 minutes out of town before my car was overheating I towed it back and they told me it was a blown head gasket! They use cheap parts that break within months but charge over $300 to fix. Please save your money and time. read more

I had to get towed for mystery problems and don't know shit about cars and they were wonderful. They send you a list of things that are good, ok, and bad. You get to pick what to have done. Reception is amazing. Will definitely be back. They are closed 11:30-12:30 for lunch. read more

I took my SUV to the auto shop to have the radiator replaced, and an oil change. They took the skid plate of my SUV off to replace the radiator and did not put it back on. When I came to pay and pick it up I was not told that the skid plate wasn't put on and they let me leave with it missing. The next day I noticed and called them when they were open and they told me to come on by. When I got there I found out that they had snapped bolts into the frame and want to charge me for their negligence and incompetence. When I said that they should fix it I was told I can't prove that they broke it. The fact that I was not told about them not putting on all the parts when I picked it up is terrible, this level of irresponsibility abhors me. read more

The crew at The Auto Shop salvaged what could have been a minor catastrophe for me. On a family visit 600 miles from my current home in Michigan, my konked out the day before I was supposed to return. Despite being a major repair - a new hybrid battery for a Prius - Jeremy and his crew took care of everything in just over two days. As always, they kept me abreast of the work, and gave me a variety of options for the part to fit my budget. As a former Carbondale resident who had taken my previous car to them many times, the added peace of mind in taking my car to someone who had always done right by me in the past made what could have been a major headache much better. This is a quality shop with real quality people, They (Jeremy and Cody) came in on their day off to fix the air conditioning in our RV so we could proceed with our vacation, as planned. And fix it they did - in less than an hour and at a cost that almost left me feeling like we had had taken advantage of them. At least a 20% markup on all parts? WTF! This shop will overcharge you, guaranteed. Yesterday they quoted a friend to replace his starter and battery for $1,000. After taking the car to another shop, he only paid $700. hell, the dealer does service cheaper than the Auto Shop. My advice, shop around because there is another shop willing to do it for less money than this one. "We need to markup our parts to stay in business", they said. Jeremy at the Auto Shop attempted to sell me a used transmission to fix difficult shifting. I declined and told him just replace the clutch. He promptly charged me twice the amount for the clutch than I would have paid directly from Napa, just to make up for the lost business I didn't give him. He was adamant that I needed a new trans and that mine would fail within a year. That was nearly two years ago, it hasn't failed yet. I realize somebody has to pay to keep the lights on at repair shops like this one, but it won't be me again. Take your car to Eddies across the street. They don't lie to you. read more

Jeremy and The Auto Shop came to my rescue recently when my van needed serious repair after a six-hour road trip left me stranded. Being from out of town, I was stressed trying to find a shop to help me. Jeremy answered my questions and kept me informed of diagnostics and repairs. Although they were unable to meet my deadline to get back on the road, Jeremy and his team stayed late and made sure my vehicle was road worthy the next morning. The bill was explained to me completely and Jeremy was even concerned enough to ask if I had a roadside assistance plan and offered to set me up if needed for added peace of mind. Suffice it to say, I will not be bringing any car back to this auto shop ever again. Don't get me wrong, the front office guys were really friendly and were able to book me in right the next day. Really friendly autoshop, but I'm not going to let friendly people rip me off! Once it came time for my appointment, it took them over an hour and a half to get back to me with what was wrong with the car. All I came in for was an oil change, and to get a recommendation on why my breaks weren't working as well as they normally did in the past. Finally after the 1.5 hours, they told me that it would be over $700 to get my back and front breaks repaired! They even tried scaring me by telling me not to even attempt taking the car onto the highway, because the break pads would give out. I said no thanks to the job, and left. They also made me pay around $50 for the break exam (which according to other mechanics, should have been free or at a much lower price). You know the best part of this whole thing? This happened sometime back in February or March. Three weeks ago I went to a different auto mechanic in Carbondale for a standard oil change who told me that my break and fuel lines were so badly rusted that he was surprised that they haven't given out yet. He even brought me into the shop and showed me the rusted lines. They were...pretty damn bad to say the least. WHY did the Auto Shop not tell me about these badly rusted break lines? They tried shoving $700 worth of new equipment in my face, but they did not tell me about a possible danger in the car? I figured out why my breaks were bad on my own...there was something stuck between the break pedal and the floor of my car. As soon as I removed it, I was able to break as I had done before. There was never a problem with my break pads to begin with. So my car made it another 10,000 miles from the time I took it in back in February or March and the break pads didn't give out. I traded the car away last week for a much better one, so that I didn't have to worry about fixing it up. However, there's no way I'm taking my new car into this shop. read more

I learned about The Auto Shop as a sales rep for an ad agency but I quickly gained respect for the Rennison family who owns and operates the business. When my Honda Accord would not start one morning they were my first choice. Jeremy stayed in close contact with me about the diagnosis and updated me as soon as they had an estimate on the cost. They did a thorough inspection that identified the major problem as well as a few minor things that would need attention later on. I was given an estimate of $675 and the final total came in under budget at $639. The service was very fast, friendly and reliable. I have been using the Auto Shop since 2007. They helped me with several problems that I had with a Honda Accord that I owned as well as a Ford Escort. I always speak to Jermey at the front desk. He is very knowledgeable and keeps in great contact with me. He will even text message me, if I say that it is okay (he always asks first), which is very convenient for my work schedule. I work for a local Police Department and it is very inconvenient when I have vehicle problems. He always gets me a timely, transparent, and fair estimate. The shop never completes any unauthorized work and keeps in excellent contact with me throughout the process. I took my Ford Explorer to the Auto Shop and had it checked out before I bought it. It has been a great vehicle for me and I did not have any major or avoidable problems. If you are a student, or a professional in the area I would highly recommend the Auto Shop.
