The entrance is from the large parking lot behind the Bunnings.

I love microbreweries, & when they serve good food, too, I dare say I fall in love with them. The Australian Hotel & Brewery proudly showcases their brewing tanks in the front of the dining area, which also features a "Kids Dining Room & Adventure Playground". In the back are billiard tables, a standing bar, & keno. Very family-friendly. Each weekday features a different special, & on Wednesdays they have pub trivia (which I have yet to try, but want to). So, the reason you're reading: the food & beer. Let's start with what's important. Their beer is great, so far as I've sampled it as yet. I'm not a fan of steam ales in general & true to form, I found theirs bland, but overheard many other patrons discussing how great it is, so it must just not be to my taste. The Mexican, on the other hand - brilliant. I'm not good with beer terminology, so let's just say I like it so much I don't feel the need to even try anything else. But a true Yelper would never stop at one, so today I'm dutifully trying another, & I have to say that the Pale Ale is quite nice, too. It goes well with both my salad & my partner's fish & chips, which I'm shamelessly pilfering. So, the food. It's good. It's quite good. It's not brilliant, but considering the place is huge, the kitchen is open, & they use buzzers to alert you when to get your food, I didn't expect it to be. Some quick thoughts on the dishes I've tried: Garlic Bread ($6): very tasty. We order it every time. Pulled pork roll with chips & coleslaw ($18): fantastic flavour, but ever so slightly dry. This is a crime I'm willing to overlook given the taste. Portuguese chicken & chips ($10 on Wednesday): not sure what they think makes it "Portuguese", but it's tender & moist & the salt-&-pepper flavouring is lovely. Chicken & avocado salad ($17): rather simple, but very good. Really hits the spot when I'm craving something light. Beer battered fish & chips ($26): a bit more heavily battered than I usually prefer, but not problematically so at all. I quite like it. The tartare sauce is super tasty.

Average, expensive food with good, interesting beer. Is it really worth the drive when you can buy the beers at Dan Murphy's? First, the beers (off the $10 paddle): - the Australian Pale Ale was the standout. Less hoppy than the Session, it struck a perfect balance with its deep, round body in the mouth. Very satisfying and perfect antidote to the searing autumn sun. - the Seis Hermanos was, initially, disappointing - as bland as a Corona (perhaps because it followed the APA). However, the corn sweetness from the maize bursts out of that deceptive start and leaves the longest finish of them all. Different from what is usually on offer, I'd definitely have it again. - the Session IPA was, well, a session IPA. A fresh, hoppy, fruity IPA but not as bitter and in your face as the more hipster versions of this style. I enjoyed it fresh off the tap but there are literally dozens of equivalent ones on the market. Beautiful orange colour perfect for autumn. - the stout, Into The Void, was the most disappointing. More bitter than Guinness, it did not compensate by an increase in body or taste. Flat and overcharred is not a good stout. I had high expectations from the oatmeal description! Nevertheless, this explains why this is the one beer in the line up at the entrance that has no medals. - can't speak for the mango whatever, but she who had it finished it, so, I guess it's alright. More than 50% good is pretty good for a brewery. I'll be seeking the beers in Singapore. Amazingly for a "brewery", the servers behind the bar admitted to not having tasted any of the beers and were unable to make a recommendation. They also were unable to locate a beer menu (there is a separate room with descriptions written on a chalk board). They did know about the two specials (a radler and a sour). The food: Unfortunately this could have been taken out of the freezer at a major supermarket chain and it would not have been much worse. The smoked BBQ pork and brisket had little smoke; the wings the exception, perhaps because of their excellent sauce. Both pork and beef looked like they spent some time under a heat lamp, dessicated and a little off colour, although the pork at least retained some moisture. The potato was a great size at least (unlike the meat portions). The chicken tenders (probably called something else) could similarly have come out of one of these cardboard boxes in the frozen section. I should have known, given the size of the menu. Unfortunately the prices do not favour experimentation to find the few items that are the specialty of the house. The tables next to us had pizzas which looked on the charred side. Pub food. At non-pub prices. The location: It's a nice drive through the hills, especially in autumn, with some beautiful views towards the mountains and relatively light traffic. Plenty of parking space even on a weekend. The main room is spacious, well lit and relatively quiet, the high ceiling of the children area unfortunately make it a cathedral of screams, but that's life with kids... they certainly enjoyed being able to play. The crowd was relaxed, plenty of tattoos and T shirts (although no shorts, but it is cold this week), quite a few biker groups, both the speed rocket and the Harley varieties, and of course tons of families. If I lived nearby I would also come chill out with a beer. Conclusion: The problem was that we expected a food destination and a brewery and instead it's a local pub/club (upstairs is a dance floor) that happens to be quite large and serve craft beers. Nice enough, if that's your thing, but probably not worth the drive. My guess is they started off with good intentions and then the crowd defaulted to a pub crowd rather than beer lovers due to the distance from the city or even the denser parts of the hills.

The food tasted so dry and it tasted like it was cooked up yesterday and reheated and not worth the money spent

Brewing 50 litres at a time, you end up paying approximately half of the amount paid for packaged beer. Everything you need is there on the spot and all the help you need is on hand. Make one of over 200 beers from simple recipes and ingredients, leave the beer there to ferment, go back two three weeks later and bottle it. The bottles and crown caps are there as well. It is environmentally friendly, the glass bottles can be reused many times and reusing also brings the cost down. You can even leave your beer there if you haven't enough room to store it at home. The beer lasts for 12 months if refrigerated and five months if kept at room temperature. Splitting 50 litres with a friend or two is a good way of having beer always on hand but not having so much that you can't use it. Custom labels can be printed making it a great present. One of the benefits of making your own beer is that according to Steve Boag, the mastermind of the brewery, is you can't get a hangover from the beer. There are no articifical colourings or preservatives used in the beer, only natural grains, water and sugars. Name most brands on the market and Steve will give you the recipe - make your own for 50% of the cost.
