This square stands out from some dated-looking parts of Augusta's downtown as being nicely decorated and well manicured. This open grass space is between Broad and Reynolds Streets and between 8th and 9th Streets. It is usually a festival or entertainment area but today it's just grass and is a lovely park. The park is filled with interesting sculpture pieces and is of course headed up by the James Brown Statue. The acre of property has a putting green quality grass area and is circled by a smooth brick walkway. When there are goings on, there is electrical and water available. If there's anything consistent about downtown Augusta, it's change. Some businesses have closed, some have opened, others have kept doing what they've done for years. You can look one direction and see new lofts in progress, look another direction and see crane's in the air, and a week later the views are completely different. It's all part of what makes it so vibrant. One spot that hasn't changed though is the Augusta Common. It still remains THE focal point of all events downtown. Whether it's Arts in the Heart, Iron Man, concerts, the Pride Parade, or free ice cream during the summer it is happening here. One major upgrade is the stage space. The city invested in a mobile and collapsible stage so a party can happen within a matter of an hour or two. The green space is always a plus and the view of the levee from Broad Street as you take a drive or a walk is always a nice reminder of just how close to the river we are. read more

The Augusta Common is one of the best venues this city has to offer. Many of us love being outdoors and this is one of the great places that can be turned into almost any kind of event. I was recently here to enjoy the Candlelight Jazz Series, which has been happening every Sunday since the Summer began. The Augusta Common has lush grass for lawn chairs, benches and a paved area around the perimeter for vendors. I've seen several organizations use this a meeting space for big and small events. This is where we have First Friday events, assemble for the Miracle Mile Breast Cancer Walk, Arts in the Heart, Border Bash and countless other events. It is located centrally and after the event you visit the Augusta Common for is over, you're close to local eateries and shopping. It's also close to the Riverwalk. read more

I'm usually in the Common for the yearly Augusta Pride festival. I'm always amazed how they pull off such a great event each year. I know the Augusta Pride President personally and I see how hard she works to put on a great event. It is to be witnessed at least once in your life. The event is lively and full of entertainment!!! There are several vendors there with great products and yummy foods and drinks!!! The only downside about it is that is in the beginning of Summer when the sun is in full blaze, but they do put up a tent so you can cool off under but this year there were no chairs so you had to bring your own or sit on the ground, which was wet!!!! There are also tons of other events held here throughout the year. So you can find a number of reasons to come here. They also have free WIFI here so that's another great reason to come here!!! read more

THE AUGUSTA COMMON! (DOWNTOWN ENTERTAINMENT VENUE) The Augusta Common is a large open space at the center of town that is used as a venue for community events and performances. When we asked one of the locals about regularly scheduled programs, he mentioned that the programs are fairly random and don't necessarily follow a particular schedule. However, he did give us an on-line resource to consult. At the center of the park, is a large statue of General James Edward Oglethorpe, the founder of the city of Augusta. It was founded in 1736 and named after Princess Augusta , wife of the Prince of Wales. It is very open and has seating along the perimeter and plenty of space for individuals to come out, bring their chairs and food and enjoy the activities. The only problem with this plan is that the main area is not a shaded so it will be very hot during the afternoon and evening hours. We had initially planned to attend a concert here tonight but later decided against it. Once the weather starts to cool, this would be an ideal venue for concerts and community gatherings. I look forward to one day returning for such an event. read more
