I stay at the Atherton on special occasions even though I live in the same town as its location, but it's a wonderful experience every time! I visit OSU once a month and stay at The Atherton Hotel each stay. While there are other hotel options in town, this one is convenient for my needs. Each and every stay has been very pleasant. Students from the university work the front desk and valet along with the onsite restaurant. While the hotel could use some renovations, the students make the stay worth while. I haven't had any major issues and when something came up, they were quick to correct them. I look forward to my next visit. read more

Staff blamed website for everything. Would not work with us or even print a bill. Two different staff members were absolutely unaccommodating. We were horribly overcharged and did not get what we reserved. Rooms were small. Included breakfast totally uninspired and more like a Holiday Inn Express. Oh and the parking is expensive and sucks. The State Room food menu just keeps on being disappointing - it's the curse of Stillwater restaurants. Starts off promising & hopeful, but never really gets better... just kind of slowly descends in to deeper and deeper mediocrity. Srsly, $8 for chips + salsa?? And why are the salads so samey-samey? Why has the caesar salad not made it onto the standard menu, and why are the non-meat options still so dismal? There's been PLENTY of time to fix that stuff up; at this point, it just feels like questionable management. Now that Bayou Bistreaux is open, The State Room's appeal is falling fast. The one thing that has remained solid is the service - h/t to the front-of-the-house staff over there. read more

I'm struggling with writing a balanced review. The rooms are beautifully decorated and comfortable. Some have tubs some don't. The views of campus are great and the breakfast is good. Had an air conditioner issue my first night & called for assistance. They couldn't send a mechanic until next day. No fans available. Kept sending videos of the extremely loud AC until they finally found me a new room (at 11pm). Took me hounding the front desk to get the change. Valet on check out had one person working and took 45 mins to get my car. Spoke w/front desk about room rate, which waa adjusted the first night b/c i had to move but they still charged me my full rate 2nd night for a lesser room. Front desk was curt,informed me I was already getting a good rate for a nice room. Customer service is lacking. Valet needs more than 1 person. Attitude of front desk seemed to be i should be grateful they let me stay in their hotel. read more

Ok so we didn't know what we were getting into going to a hotel on campus. My son was on a recruiting visit so thought let's stay on campus to get a feel for things. Well we were pleasantly surprised and impressed by not just the hotel but the staff. The rooms are spacious. The amenities were great and I can't say enough what a great job the staff did. Biggest bed is a queen. :-( I expected a king option; if you're not sleeping alone be prepared to get elbowed in the face. The Atherton has several different sized rooms and additional space to meet with clients. A5 least one of the non bedrooms has a grand piano (major plus!), and another has a full wet bar. We stayed in a room with a common space, very fancy, very nice. Disappointed in the small beds. Beautiful little hotel. Validation for parking. read more

This was an exceptional hotel down to the wine glasses and coffee mugs in the room. Completely run by OSU students, they did an amazing job from the initial welcome into the hotel, the business meeting cocktails, to the final goodbye. My husband and I came here to stay for a few nights right after our wedding. We arrived Friday night, coming directly from our reception. We had to wait in the lobby for nearly 30 minutes to check in, even though I was in my wedding dress and we were carrying luggage and gifts. The woman working the front desk said it was her very first day, so it was understandable why she wasn't able to get us checked in. However, they should have had someone there to help her. After she gave us our room key, we went up to our room and the key didn't work. We tried it a few times and then heard someone from inside the room tell us it was occupied. We went back downstairs and she gave us a different room key for a different room. We went back upstairs and tried the room key again and it still didn't work. So we went back downstairs and got a third room key, for a completely different floor, and it finally worked. We managed to finally make it into our room around 12:30 am and weren't even offered waters or drinks or anything after all of the inconveniences. The next day we had planned to eat a nice, honeymoon dinner down at Ranchers Club and when we called earlier that day they were already completely booked up for the entirety of our stay. We spent the day resting and recovering in our room with nothing to do but watch low-quality, cable TV, and we weren't able to find anything good as there was no channel list or TV guide. We also had to kill a big beetle that got into our room. We tried to leave later that day to go have dinner somewhere else, but it cost us $15 for every day we parked at the hotel. Usually when parking in a parking garage at a hotel, I can expect to get a voucher since I'm already paying hundreds of dollars to stay at the hotel. However, the parking garage charged us $45 to park. The day before our wedding, we stayed at the Springhill Suites by Marriott in Stillwater. The service was phenomenal and they even offered my husband and I free drinks and snacks for the entire weekend. The staff went outside and lit firepits so that we could site with our friends after the rehearsal dinner and catch up. The Springhill Suites was half the cost of the Atherton, the rooms and bathrooms were twice as big, the service was phenomenal, the breakfast was great and free, and it was bug-free. There was plenty of parking and that also was completely free. We will never be staying at the Atherton again or recommending it to anyone. read more

We were genuinely greeted by Whitney at the desk and Lucas the valet. Whitney took additional time to assist me with internet access. Our room was wonderful with a lovely garden view and huge soaker bath tub. Complimentary breakfast in the Ranchers club was excellent and Glo was friendly and efficient. read more

I've stayed at the Atherton twice - once for two nights in a presidential suite with a couple of my friends, the second time for one night with my wife in one of the interior rooms. Let's not kid ourselves; the place is expensive. But you get what you pay for: nicely furnished rooms, impeccable cleanliness, friendly inviting staff, and - most importantly in my opinion - walking distance to any campus events you might be attending as well as the Strip with its multiple food and drink opportunities. There's a great restaurant inside - the Rancher's Club - that has a pricy dinner but also hosts the complimentary breakfast each morning. The price is still a bit of a detraction for me, as are the lack of windows in the interior rooms. It didn't bother me so much but a friend of mine who's more than a tad claustrophobic couldn't stand it. read more

The hotel itself is excellent and has very high quality service, as well as nice amenities. The problem has nothing to do with the hotel itself, but is in regards to the parking situation. The incredibly high rates that are charged are absurd. Essentially every other hotel in America has complimentary self parking, but for some reason it costs a considerable amount per night here. read more

I stayed here for a humanities conference on campus I was attending, and it was within walking distance of all the buildings I needed to get to and all the places we retired to for social festivities after the business of the day was done. My room was very nice, with a great soft bed and sweet little touches. I really, really love the shampoo and conditioner they give you, for instance! They're scented with sweet oranges and make my hair smell amazing. I wish I could buy full size bottles! The maids did not bother me (which can be a problem with some hotels) and my stay was very relaxing. Although maybe they should've, because my one complaint is that I don't think the rooms are cleaned as well as they could be. They're fine if you don't look too closely, but I happened to be looking for an extra electrical outlet and glanced behind the nightstand to find a HUGE dead cockroach lying in the dust. It scared me quite a bit before I realized it was dead, and it was certainly an unwelcome surprise. But I tried to forget it was there and enjoy my stay, and it was okay after that. I didn't want to make a big deal of it or bother anyone at the front desk, but now that I think of it, I probably should have just rang them and asked if someone could come and remove it, especially with as much as I was paying for the room (I got a conference discount, but still). I don't like bugs, even dead ones. Anyway! On a better note, the complimentary breakfast is lovely and substantial, not cheap doughnuts and apples like some hotels. There were hot pancakes, potatoes, eggs, sausage, bacon, danishes, bagels, coffee, orange juice, milk, and fruit. So that was a nice touch. Apart from the one little blip, my stay at the Atherton was great. I would stay there again if I am ever in Stillwater for business or another conference. read more

I stayed here at the beginning of January 2009. I arrived late and was greeted by an extremely friendly (and cute) young lady, who was most likely a student. My room was quite nice, with good bedding, down pillows, free internet (wireless and ethernet), flat screen LCD, and an iHome clock radio that let me listen to my iPhone music through its speakers (once I was in airplane mode). Everything was clean and charming. Breakfast at the restaurant downstairs was a buffet, though the selection was rather limited. I definitely recommend the Atherton. It's one of the nicest campus hotels I've ever seen. read more

Disregard the reviews below. The Atherton has since been "remodeled" and the gem it was destroyed. I am almna who previously stayed here many times just to get away in a place I felt safe and comfortable, the OSU campus. No more! The beautiful entrance that faced the main campus garden and duck pond was moved to the top of the parking garage. The terrace is now for restaurant us rather than the hotel. There is no convenience to this move for guests as, despite being literally on top of a parking garage, The Atherton Hotel parking is now located all the way across the University Ave. !!!!! with 35 Atherton designated parking spots. This is insanely ridiculous as they REMOVED more that 35 parking spots to create the cheesy "valet parking" which you are now expected to tip a person for when you are literally standing on top of a parking garage with plenty of parking on top and beneath. If you choose "valet" you are choosing to send a student employee on their standard journey to either run, in the dark, around the chapel and to cross traffic to fetch your car OR their preferred option, to risk injury running across the parking car garage, jumping the fence and hopping down a steep incline before crossing traffic to fetch your car. If you choose "self-park" your will be parking in the same 35 spots as "valet" yourself. After parking you will walk a creepy, dark unlit sidewalk to University Ave. You will then, while looking straight at the entrance of the hotel realize you can't easily actually get to it! You must A) Go straight across, climb up the same steep hill the valet kids jump down, go around the chapel in total, unsafe, unpaved darkness and back across the parking garage to the entrance, B) happen to notice that there is an unmarked, basement level entrance to the hotel, cross in traffic and navigate (risk breaking your ankle) on the uneven, slanted, curved, weird median- DO NOT ATTEMPT if you are in heels or have mobility issues !- and travel under the garage to through the basement OR if just arriving option C. may appear pleasant and feasible. THINK AGAIN-which would be to go down to the corner, cross as though you were heading toward the original entrance through the beautiful OSU garden with the Duck Pond to your left. Guess what!?! You can't access the hotel from this side as the doors are kept locked! You MIGHT be able to go in through the unmarked restaurant entrance IF you know where it is and IF it is open and the doors unlocked. Otherwise you must either turn around and go back to the parking garage and choose option A or B OR continue on several blocks around or through the student union which is unnerving, alone at night with nobody there. Like a bad dream. Before there was a huge, beautiful lobby with a lovely check in desk. This beautiful, high end boutique hotel style lobby has been reduced to a small room that you have to intentionally find. There are double doors to connect to the restaurants but no hostess station from the hotel side. Guests must walk through the bar and restaurant to the other side as though coming in through the back door. Just weird for a high-end hotel. The hallways to the rooms upstairs are winding and very lengthy. One set of elevators have been closed off so if you do not have a room near the far end elevators, you are in for a lengthy walk each time you come and go. But wait, why don't you just use the stairs? Oh this part is really "fun." If you make the mistake of using the marked "exit" stairs you are in for a real "treat!" They dump put into the deep belly office area of the old portion of the student union and you CAN'T GET BACK IN!!!! The keep pads are non-operational and there is no sign telling guests this. If you do this at night or early in the morning you face traversing the maze of hallways to find your way across and down through the hugh union building, out to the street and walking a few blocks back to the front entrance of the hotel OR finding the obscure Atherton entrance to the hotel which I doubt few could do easily if it was their first time to the hotel. This happened many times to my party this past weekend. Fridges but no microwave in the rooms, tons of high end chrome hardware in the bathrooms but no soap dish/ledge in shower so you have to keep throw your soap on the floor. Closet and sink inside the same room as clear doored shower and toilet with no door between so if you had needed to use the sink or access the closet while someone else was showering or on the john .... not pleasant! This almna is so very, very disappointed. I wanted to impress several students I brought to check out the campus for future attendance and instead we had one bad issue after another. I understand management has been farmed out to a private company now. The beautiful, historic, and convenient asset to OSU has been turned into a problematic boarding house. Not worth the nice decor which is the only redeeming item left about the place. read more
