The Astor Theatre was built in the 1930s and still retains the art-deco charm of that period. Upon walking in you really feel like you have stepped back in time when going to the movies was a one off experience that you saved your pennies for all month. With soft lighting and comfy overstuffed chairs The Astor Theatre can hold around 1,150 patrons at any one time. The cinema screen is up a carpeted set of old fashioned stairs, and The Astor often holds classy events and private screenings on both its upper and lower levels. Featuring only one film each night, with the exception of Wicked Wednesday's where you can see two films back to back for the price of one; The Astor Theatre screens a variation of old school classics to modern day cinema. A cherished icon of the Chapel Street Area I love seeing movies at The Astor, for it's olden day feel and modern cinema approach.

The Astor is an icon in Melbourne. I love the fact it's not tainted and still has its rustic, art-deco furnishing where the fact that it runs double-headers is phenomenal. I'm a huge film lover and when there's a good double header on, I'm there in a heartbeat. I saw Tarantino's "Grindhouse" there and there was something so amazing and old school about it, where it made me reminisce on times when this was the norm (not that I was around then). Yes, the chairs aren't that comfy compared to some of the newer complexes but who cares. You go for the fun of it! There is more charm and beauty in this place that you can imagine as time goes on how much legacy it takes with it. I'm sure it would be an absolute pleasure to work there. I also get a little excited when I get the new timetable arrives in the mail each year. It makes me feel a part of it and I love circling the double features I want to go to in the coming months. There really is no other cinema like it. That's why it will be an icon for a long time.

The Astor Theatre's bright coloured and glossy quarterly poster, which advertises their screening schedule, is a staple feature in almost every university student's share-house. Clearly, most of the people who display this poster on the back of their toilet doors have either never been or virtually never go, because the Astor always seems verging on empty. The theatre has a huge screen and they exhibit an amazing selection of new and old films as double features (often managing to secure rare 70mm prints of old classics and arthouse gems). This makes it more than just a trip to the movies, but a real experience. Though a little run down, the art deco building is beautiful inside (if not particularly impressive on the exterior). The Astor is a real Melbourne institution that is definitely worth a visit.

In 2015, this place is going to close its doors...permanently. This upsets me a little as I loved this place (despite only being there once). I visited the theatre for a film screening event and I enjoyed the atmosphere more than the shows. It has a wonderful classic retro ambience. Such a pity that it's closing.

The most beautiful cinema in the world. Watched rear window and vertigo. Can never go back to 'boring' cinemas again!

Yeah, this theatre is nothing short of awesome, but then again it does happen to be a Melbourne icon.

Honestly, this really isn't one of my favourite cinemas out there, probably because the location…read morejust feels really dead, especially on Sundays. However, it is one of the palace cinemas which means that it does tend to have some pretty good movies showing, as well as quite a few of the stage to screen productions as well (which is the main reason I tend to end up at these cinemas). The cinema itself isn't all that bad, and is easier to get to than some of them, but once again, it isn't a favourite.

Never thought I'd say this about a cinema but Palace Como is CLASSY! I guess this neighbourhood has…read morea reputation to keep up so an average cinema just won't cut it for the locals. The waiting area was furnished like a lavish ballroom. It was seriously regal, from the Victorian chaise lounges and armchairs to the ornate mirrors and lighting. There was even a grand piano on display (what a shame nobody was playing on it). And I spied not an ordinary bar but a 'Prosecco' bar which I would have made a beeline for if I wasn't already slightly late for the film. And then of course only when I took my seat did I realise that I could have purchased a vino and laid it on the cute mini table beside me (not cup holder. TABLE!). Maybe next time, when I'm no longer a noob. One other thing worth mentioning was that the (female) loo was super fancy like the rest of place, and very clean too! They get a whole star just for that!

I'm very particular when it comes to watching a film. For a while I wasn't going to cinemas due to…read morethe fact my screen at home was big enough, I didn't stick to the seat and people weren't yelling during it. The Classic Cinema in Elsternwick has the touch of class that is needed when going out to watch a film. They always have a healthy array of the Hollywood films but there is a place for the lesser known titles and foreign films where it is always refreshing to see that they support those films. It might sound wanky but it's important that you feel like it's still an occasion to go to the cinemas. It's very clean, you can get a beer or champagne and some perfectly salted popcorn to take in and the people working give you the certain respect you hope for. Now it's not just in Gold Class where you can get good service with a smile. Then in the actual cinema the seats are large where again it's clean and because a standard is set, people aren't inclined to be rude and you can enjoy your movie. I'm very big on the movie-going culture and I believe that it has changed to more of a teen thing but be sure, The Classic Cinema's are suited more for the types that still want to go to the movies as a special occasion (especially seeing as ticket prices have risen). I definitely think it's worth getting up off the couch to go and see a really good film there. I'm very happy it's my local cinema.

The building's a little classy, which always makes things a little nicer. I guess this is where prints go when the major cinemas are a bit tired of them.

Bring a picnic (no booze though!), or buy snacks and meals from the onsite vendors and have dinner as the sun sets. I ate a crazy corn salad that had fresh corn, popped corn and puffed corn mixed through. It was a little weird, yet ridiculously delicious. The bar has a small but respectable selection, including expensive (read: real) bottles of Champagne which presumably you have to drink from a plastic cup. This goes against every boozy moral fiber in my body, so we stuck to "sparkling" and sipped away as we watched the retro classic, The Breakfast Club. Even though the cinema runs in summer, most nights down by St Kilda beach are bloody freezing so I'd suggest you layer up and pack your own blanket because trust me, you're going to free your bits off.

The idea of watching a 3 hour space epic involving wormholes, sarcastic robots, and Anne Hathaway…read moreoutside on St. Kilda beach initially sounded crazy. Who would want to sit that long on a blanket watching a not Imax (or whatever) projection of Interstellar. Then, I thought about it some more and it sounded like a crazy good idea. Watching a movie about the adventure and wonder of space travel under the stars--what could be better? Then it sounded crazy again. This went on and on up until the movie started and the sun went down. Turns out it was a great idea. I wish we had come correct, though, with a chair or something, but overall it was pretty nice. A couple of suggestions: 1) pay extra and get a chair. We thought you could do this on site, but apparently you have to do it online. Still not sure how, but you are probably smarter than me. 2) Bring some food. The right choice will vary from movie to movie. 3) Go with the bottle of wine. There are no deals at a self-contained outdoor theater, but if you are going to have more than one drink (and you will likely be there for at least 3-4 hours so, yes, you will have more than one drink) go with the wine over beer and the bottle over a glass. You will pay a lot, but it tastes good, will make sitting on your small piece of earth seem more reasonable, and hey its beautiful out here so stop complaining. All of this could be equally said of Melbourne in general. The bottom line is that if you are going to go to a movie anyway, you might as well go to one outside on the beach. It will be expensive, crowded, and often annoying, but it will also be great. Take a deep breath buy a bottle of wine (or another bottle of wine...) and enjoy the show.
