This experience exceeded my wildest imagination. Walking into the workshop room was a mini-tour in and of itself- sort of a behind-the-scenes which I delighted in. The workshop was small enough in attendance to have a cozy room and intimate instruction, and big enough to see an array of artistic expression. It was also so much fun to banter and be inspired by other attendees. The instructor was friendly, clear, helpful, and seemed to enjoy leading this workshop. I will say next go-around I'll not be so delicate with my glaze application. I also discovered some personal sensory issues with the tile texture and glaze removal tools. (*ick). Aside from these minor nuances, I cannot wait to return in the spring for new tile and color ways. $50/person was totally reasonable for the whole evening. Highly recommend and will do again.

The upstairs gallery was closed when we were there, so we just browsed the shop, which is full of all sorts of beautiful ceramic items like tiles, vases, art, and more. I liked seeing all the different pieces but nothing really shouted out to me. The animal tiles were probably my favorite. I also liked the house number tiles. They also had other non-ceramic items for sale, like earrings, puzzles, calendars, cards, etc. It is a nice place to find gifts! They also do classes and workshops, which sound fun! This isn't a spot that I need to visit every time I'm in the area, but it was fun to finally check out.

My son enjoys it very much. Staff is friendly. Interior well kept. Reasonably priced. I especially like the pay as you go policy. No $$ wasted if you miss a class. I saw this place pop up in Berkley a few years ago and was intrigued. I don't consider myself an…read moreartist by any stretch of the imagination. I hadn't attempted anything creative since the last art class I had in grade school. But I was interested when I saw they offered a Zentangle class which promised the only artistic ability you needed was to draw a stick figure. I took the class and ended up really enjoying it. It is essentially structured, meditative doodling. I came back for several more Zentangle classes when I found it was a great way to relieve stress and get out of the rut of logical, left-brain thinking. I never intended to create great art, but rather to get in touch with the creative part of my brain and to enjoy the meditative qualities of creating art. But I enjoyed Zentangle so much that I eventually branched out and tried several other classes that included things like intuitive painting, sculpture, and traditional Japanese Sumi-e black ink painting. Each class was fun and informative, and I was surprised to find sometimes I actually liked some of the art I created, too, and not just the process. The owner, Debby, and the instructors have all been great. They clearly love helping people learn and get in touch with their creativity. Articipate offers a wide variety of events, classes and lessons. It seems like there is something for everyone - regardless of age and whether you consider yourself artistic or not. It seems like a glut of places have popped up in the past few years offering private "paint parties". I have been to a couple of those and while they can be fun, this place takes an approach that is much more fun and engaging than a one size fits all "paint by numbers" approach - regardless of artistic ability. I was very disappointed, I also ordered a pink lemonade, it was the best thing that I ordered. I didn't eat my food however I took a carry out. I also want a carry out cup for my lemonade. I ask the waiter for a cup to carry my drink with me. The waiter said that the owner didn't allow carry out for the drinks. Wow, the bill was 60.oo dollars. I was shocked and disappointed in the food and the final draw was that I was not able to take me drink with me. Note! The waiter offered to give me a bowl to put my drink in. We got to make 2 items during the 3 hour handbuilding class and it flew by- we could've stayed another hour or so. I saw classes at other studios that only lasted an hour and I'm so glad I went with Sugar Hill Clay. It was $180 for up to a 4-person private class and worth every penny. We were able to book a Saturday class with Chen (who was so talented, knowledgeable and set such a calming presence) and would do it again! After you make your items, Chen will glaze them with your color preference and fire them. Once they're ready, they let you know when you can pick up the pieces! 1000% would recommend- hidden gem!
