This was only my second time doing something like this, the first being at a different chain in 2016 in New Orleans for a bachelorette party. I went yesterday for a friend's birthday party and it was a lot of fun. It was easy to sign up and pay online beforehand ($40). I didn't know what we would be creating until we arrived - I'm not sure if my friend chose that, or PWAT chose for her. I think our instructor's name was Rachel, and she was very good. I'm not really good at painting, my painting came out okay overall IMO though. You're allowed to bring drinks and food, I think my friend and some of the other attendees brought some alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and some snacks. The class is two hours long and you'll leave with a nice painting of your own creation. They also had a contest mid-class where we could guess the number of wine corks in a big bottle, and I was the winner! (I was only four off - I won't tell you the # though because I think they do this every class) Because of that, I was able to choose a painting from the wall, and I really love the one I chose. I believe these paintings are done by instructors. Overall I'd come back here again although it's a little bit of an expensive habit if you go often ($40 each time). read more

I visited the Ferndale location of Painting with a Twist for a girls night, and it was my first ever Painting with a Twist experience! We visited on a Thursday after booking the class a few months in advance. (I don't think you have to book that early, but it was what worked for our schedules). The class was scheduled for two hours, was held in the back room of the studio, and had about 8 guests total in it. Our instructor was super friendly, supportive, and knowledgeable. I was able to paint a nice nature scene and spend some time with family! My only complaint is that the class moved soooo fast so it was kind of hard to keep up. I brought my mom here for Mother's Day, much to her chagrin she had to do some artwork. Was both of our first times and she was reticent about having to paint herself. Our instructor was super patient with us and took his time and explained every line of paint that we drew, with room for interpretation, of course. This was the best introduction to a group a painting class that I've ever been to. I think they have a great classroom set ups and great teachers. I wanted the coffee shop theme. They have calendars of events online and I'll show you pictures of what they're going to teach for the class. It's great because it's BYOB, bring your own spirits and snacks if you like. Even though my painting turned out dope, I was really disappointed with my experience with Painting with a Twist. When you first arrive: The inside of the studio is filled with beautiful artwork. I was like a kid in a candy store when it came to looking at all the artwork. They have so many dope paintings that other classes have painted and you can paint based off the demand for that painting. The women at the reception desk were so nice! The Painting Experience: The tables that we painted at were skinny and made us feel like we were painting on top of each other. It was fine since I was with a group of co-workers and we are comfortable with each other. This place is definitely BYOB because the wine was flowing throughout the painting experience. I only had one glass of wine because the instructor was moving so fast that I had to focus a little too much on keeping up. I am not sure if the instructor, Esther, has run one of these classes but she doesn't seem like she has before. She was hard to connect with and refused to stay at a slower pace for a group of people that are literally drinking while painting. There was numerous times throughout the night that we had to ask about a step again to the point that I was essentially giving my table the instructions. We had an assist that was supposed to help the people that fell behind but that person wasn't really around during the night. I left the experience being very frustrated. Overall: I would probably visit Painting with a Twist to see if it was just that instructor I had a bad experience with or if all of the instructors are like her. Came here for a friends bday & had a BLAST! This entire time I thought the twist was just apart of the name....... LITTLE DID I KNOW the twist was alcohol, or in our case wine. Would've made it a point to come here sooner haha. Our instructor Esther was great, and she had such a good sense of humor ( which I would imagine you would need dealing with drunk people painting) and my painting didn't come out half bad. They walk you through the entire process from start to finish, so even if you don't have one artistic bone in your bday, your painting is bound to come out halfway decent. I chose this particular location because they have more paintings that I like. However it has now become my favorite location because my private party was excellent because of them. I was there on Sunday 11/11/18 for my birthday celebration. We painted "Queenie" which I adored. Jackie who we affectionately referred to as "teacher" was phenomenal! She also seemed to enjoy our party and my music choice! The party before mine ran over but everything worked out just fine and they apologized profusely for the delay. They were very helpful and accommodating with helping set up and no one noticed the hiccup from the previous party. Overall a really fun experience and I would do it again. We came to the location Ferndale because we didn't like the painting the downtown location was doing that night. The location was a little bit hard to find, with one entry being in the back of the building and other entry being on a busy street. When I first entered I felt giddy looking at all the painting on the wall and the art supplies. It's definitely BYOB which many people were not aware of. They enforce a strict mask wearing rule except for when drinking or eating. We were seated on the far right of the room which was very hard to see the instructor in the front class; luckily they had monitors on each side of the room. It was still very hard to look up at the monitors because we had a cranes our necks. The class started little bit late as we are waiting for people to join, and as a result the instructor sped through the painting class so much to the point where we were several steps behind. Most people in the class did not have a chance to drink or eat the food they brought. It felt very fast and rushed with only a few moments here and there to really relax and enjoy. The class ended at nine which is the same time the store closed and the entire staff made us feel so rushed to clean up and get out of the building. The manager was especially very pushy and curt. TLDR i'll definitely be back to painting with a twist but probably not this location. Overall really fun experience getting to paint. read more

They call painters "twisters". Although it is part of a bigger franchise, the PWAT in Ferndale has it's own unique flair. They recently moved down the street to a bigger studio. I can see why because every painting I've done was jam packed with painters. My favorite parts: -Bring your own wine or juice if you don't drink -Variety of paintings to chose from -They take suggestions from Twisters via Facebook to select the next month's paintings. -Kid Camps and children painting sessions at a discounted rate of $25 -Contests for free painting seats on fb -No 2 paintings are alike (you don't have to be a professional artist to paint a beautiful painting) -All material provided. Overall I love having an outlet to express myself and it's fun. I go alone and have as much fun as I would with my girlfriends because everyone is nice and it's a big gathering. Still 5 stars, but would just like to update now that I have had a party here. We hosted a retirement party for my mom and it was great. The staff had everything prepared and ready to start on time despite another party ending immediately prior to the start of ours. Watching these ladies work is like watching a film in fast forward, they are swift! For our, party many of our guests had not seen each other in forever and we obliviously stood around greeting each other 10-15 minutes past our start time. No worries, the staff never said a word to hurry us along. I guess they figure if we wanna each pay $35 to stand around and talk so be it. Eventually we did begin painting though and out instructor was great. My family & friends can be a little overbearing and there were 12 of us, but she single-handedly handled us well despite being pulled in literally a dozen different directions with a load of questions and "helps". Not once did she show agitation or impatience or annoyance. I was also quite impressed that we finished on time and were still able to take a couple of breaks during the session. For the party we were allowed to bring food and beverages. They provided cups and napkins and tubs of ice! So thoughtful and helpful! All of the staff here is cool. From my initial reservation for the party I had $15 coming back to me that I had completely forgotten about. One of the ladies was sure to track me down before I left to ensure that my $$ was returned to me. This place is great. I just love this place. No matter what you think your artistic skill level is, you will have fun and do well here. They have fun choices daily of different paintings to chose from. This visit in particular, which was not my first, we painted on a framed screen which was different then the normal canvas painting we've done in the past. We were scared and skeptical of our abilities to even draw a straight line. But fear not, the awesome ladies at Painting with a Twist can turn anyone into an artist! We truly had a blast creating our beach chair canvases this evening as our end of the semester celebration. Our instructor was great, she explained each and every step, gave us words of encouragement and boosted out confidence (what a good teacher should do...we would know!) she encouraged us to put our own spin on the picture and take risks and I must say looking around the room at the 25 people there everyone's picture was unique and that was very cool to see. I loved seeing guys here too! This is not just for the ladies! Several couples were enjoying a nice date night. You can also reserve a room if you have a large party. We had 5 and we were all seated together so it worked out great. You also can bring in beer, wine and snacks....one group even had a pizza delivered from Hungry Howies up the road. Had the most fun time painting a Classroom welcome sign with my fellow teachers! Only $35 for a 2 hour session, and it's BYOB! I appreciate that they provide plastic cups, a chiller, and a corkscrew! The instructors are so sweet, and patient. If you want to do something different than the model, they encourage you to be creative! We had so much fun in the group class! We reserved about two and a half weeks early since the classes fill up fast. This location was really easy to find with ample paid parking behind the building (the cost need up being 1.10 for 2 hours and 15 mins). The studio was clean and our instructor made it so much fun. The "rules" are something everyone can follow. My favorite thing was that we were encouraged to think outside of the box and use other colors if we wanted. Our instructor also had a few "more advanced" techniques she would call optional just incase novices we uncomfortable. They provide canvas with a partial outline, paint, brushes, and smocks. All you have to bring is your creative attitude, some friends, and a bottle of wine. Also! Don't be scared to do it alone. Our class was taught by George - he did a great job! when you get there all the paint you need will be on a paper plate - you'll use a second paper plate to mix the colors. They supply you with brushes and aprons. And paper plates. When you are finished you get to take your masterpiece home :-) some of you may be concerned about parking. I was. This was my first time visiting this PWAT location( I've only been to one other). I'm by no means an artist and if you add adult beverages, my skill level plummets. This was a great time! The instructor was helpful and funny. She really made this a step by step process that was easy to follow. The group instruction and individualized attention she gave allowed the class to flow, but still gave you moments to socialize with friends. We played a cute game of heads or tails, which was hilarious with slightly tipsy adults. The only downer was the parking which is always part of any Ferndale activity. Painting with a Twist is such a fun day/night out! I've done this a few times before, but never at this location. Me and three of my girlfriends came in last Friday. Nicki was our instructor. She was awesome, best instructor I've ever had. She encouraged all of us to step out of the box and that we could add our own artistic flair to our paintings! I had such a great time. This location is in downtown Ferndale, so parking can be a little hard. I would suggest getting down there 20+ min early to find a spot to park and get a glass of wine before the class starts. read more

Painting with a Twist opened in October 2010, and it seems a lot of people still either don't know it's there or don't quite understand what you do there, so I'm here to tell you! Basically, you go in with your friends and paint a picture, and you can bring wine/beer/snacks/etc. You can look at their schedule online and select a night that offers a particular painting you like, or you can schedule a private party where you can select any painting from their catalog. For private parties, you need a minimum of 10 people, but for the regular schedule you can just walk in by yourself if you want and paint the picture they are teaching that night. And for any class, you get to take your painting home as soon as you're done, because acrylic paint dries very quickly. Since they opened, they had a particular painting on the wall that I'd been dying to try, so when it finally appeared on the schedule I begged a few friends to join me. We wound up with a group of 4, and since nobody else signed up for that night (SNOW), it was like our own private party! I was hoping my husband and I could both hang up our paintings at home, so we asked if we could change the colors slightly on one of the paintings, and they were happy to oblige. I painted a pink house and he painted a blue one! Some people may have an issue with the fact that everyone in class paints the same thing, but this is no different than most other art classes - I just finished one at the BBAC where every class member had to draw the same apple, paint the same leaf, etc. Only we didn't get to drink while we did it! The atmosphere is really great - roaring fire, clean welcoming space, friendly staff! There are tons of tables & chairs for painters, and those who have reserved in advance will find their space all set up with a canvas, easel, paints, brushes, water, and paper towels. There's also a separate table set up for your beverages & snacks (they have plastic cups and ice available). The folks who work there are VERY friendly and happy, clearly it's a fun place to work. Our teacher Wendolin did a great job of making us feel comfortable, have fun, and somehow pulled some decent painting skills out of everyone. Our particular painting involved a lot of easy shading up front and a lot of intensely detailed work toward the end, and apparently I'm pretty anal so I took WAY longer than everyone else in our group. The staff did not rush me at all and even helped me with some of the parts I wasn't happy with, and they cleaned up everything after we left. Throughout the night, the kept everything moving along and made sure everyone had a great time. We will DEFINITELY be back! I think it would be great fun for a date night, girls night out, birthday party, they even have family days where the painting is a little easier. Melissa, our group's self appointed "entertainment coordinator", suggested that we have a fun group activity one week in lieu of our Bible study. Luckily Painting With a Twist was suggested and even luckier for me... The nearest location is just a mile down the road from my house! I had always wondered exactly what was behind the idea and I was honestly scared for the place when it opened on West 9 Mile Road in Ferndale. I figured it would be gone in six months, but I was definitely wrong. The idea is simple: Get a group of people together, choose a painting to recreate, add snacks and "BYOB" wine and beverages, mix it all together, and voila! Our group chose to do "Moonlit Cherry Blossoms" (or something to that effect), which was a good "beginner" painting. They look sort of complicated at first, but the way that our leader, Wendy, broke it down, the painting was actually a snap. Complete with bedazzled apron, Wendy was our homegrown "Bob Ross" and walked us through each step of the painting. I have painted for many years, so it was easier for me than for some. However, everyone people really owned their painting and made each "masterpiece" their own, from changing up the colors (the original was a pinky-purple) to changing the placement of the branches, etc. I was impressed at how well everyone did. The wine was "BYOW," but you can bring just about anything you like. They provide some tiny snacks and silverware. I brought some dessert to contribute. Others brought wine, non-alcohol beverages, cookies, cheeses, cured sausage, etc. I wouldn't eat a full-on meal, but I'm sure you could probably pull off a pot luck! The rule was if you took yourself too seriously, you're supposed to take another sip of wine and reevaluate. (Wink.) Overall I really have to say that the Ferndale Painting With a Twist has their stuff together! I would absolutely book a private party (minimum 10, prepaid individually or as a group online or in person) or take a couple friends to an open paint session. For Michigan folks, there are two locations, Ferndale and Farmington. Even if you don't have an "artistic bone in your body," you can still make a painting you'd be happy to hang in your house. read more

I love PWAT... but I've definitely learned my lesson on what locations I like best. We usually do the Rochester Hills location which is fun. Not as big as some of the other ones, but I've always had a good time and been really comfortable with my painting experience at that location. My cousins and I recently went to the Ferndale location (our second time), and this will probably be our last for a really long time, if ever. The instructor, Jenna, was very hard to connect with. Wasn't very fun or enthusiastic AT ALL. It was a Disney themed painting and it would have been nice to have music playing relating to that rather than what was playing. Anytime anyone asked for help, she would stand back and in turn ask "what is it you want help with? (insert answer/difficulty) Oh I think it looks fine. There are SOS classes you can sign up for if you need to come back and fix whatever." and would walk away. (side note: there was another person there, but we're not sure if she was supposed to be an assistant or what because we never saw her walking around offering help either). Jenna moved through the steps, with barely any explanation on technique or stroke. It was such a 'blah' experience. She gave off the vibe that she really didn't want to be there, and in turn made me feel like I just couldn't wait to be done with the painting and be out of there. I'm not an artist by any means, but I will say, disappointingly, that the painting from that day is by far my LEAST favorite that I've done. Before the last person had walked out of the door the instructor was already half way through the parking lot, bag in hand. Clearly she didn't want to waste a minute longer being there. I signed up for another Disney painting the next day at the Roseville location with Emily and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! They pre-outlined the shapes on the canvas for everyone. Kept track of everyone that was coming in and delayed the class from starting for a bit waiting for a couple people. They played Disney movie songs while we all painted a Disney movie picture. Both her and her assistant, A'Janae, interacted with the customers, got involved in the conversation when everyone was talking about one Disney movie or another, etc. Both instructors we ready and able to help, and would even refill paint without the person asking because they noticed it first. Emily was very patient, and explained her techniques and brush strokes slowly and clearly. Suggested we practice on our napkins or plates to make sure we understood. They weren't in a hurry to rush everyone out of the door. They stuck around and took pictures of the seperate groups that were there. It was my first time going to this location and I was very pleased i made the drive. It was worth it. read more

Wow, this place has a lot of 5-star reviews. That seems a little generous in my estimation, but there are a lot of things they do well. The instructors are very clear, for example. They make it very easy to follow along with the steps to replicate whatever picture you are trying to replicate. All of your supplies are organized and waiting for you. They build in breaks to keep you from turning your painting into a muddled brown mess (which, I admit, I am otherwise prone to do). They let you drink. The bathroom was clean. Art classes are fun. Somehow wine makes people who wouldn't ordinarily sign up for an art class willing to sign up for an art class. Those are all positives in my view, and I really did enjoy myself while I was there. So why am I too stingy to give them 5 stars? Because at the end of the day, you go there to make shitty art that looks an awful lot like the shitty art that your friend is making. You don't really have a new skill. You don't have something that you will want to hang on your wall. Or, I don't know... maybe I'll put mine up in the garage. So, you're paying $45 for a couple hours of fun. It really is fun, but so are a lot of other things that don't cost $45. read more

I came here for my birthday last December. It was a really fun time. I can see this as something that really anybody would like. Like the other reviewers have said, you could do this with a boyfriend/girlfriend, family, or friends. I have come here twice with two different boyfriends (hey-o) and they both enjoyed it. And they both were very hesitant. I would love to book a party here for my family, I know they would have the best time. The instruction is easy to follow and they encourage you to make it your own. I've been to this location twice - once with one of my bridesmaids before my wedding, and again recently with my husband. I've thoroughly enjoyed myself both times. The staff is great and they are accommodating to all talent levels. The last time I went, I was in a class with a REALLY rowdy, obnoxious group. They brought in cases of beer and proceeded to yell/scream/stomp the entire time. However, our instructor was able to help all of us with grace and ease. It takes great talent to be able to handle a group like that and still ensure that everyone has a good time! read more

Had no idea what to expect going into here besides painting something. You don't have to have any skill the instructor walks you through the whole process. Its definitely fun and you can bring in beer or wine who doesn't love that! Next time I go I would want to go as a group to be able to pick the painting. Painting with a Twist is so fun! I just went last night with two friends and we had a great time learning how to paint The Sleeping Bear Dunes at Sunset. Everything at Painting with a Twist is very organized. Your seat is reserved ahead of time so you have a place to sit, with an easel and the brushes and paints you will need upon arrival. The instructor gives you step by step instructors while still encouraging you to have fun with your painting and make it your own. I think this would be fun for all levels of artists - no experience, beginner, intermediate, advanced. The twist is that you can bring your own beverages and food to enjoy while painting. We brought wine. Painting with a Twist also has a private party room that you can reserve if you have a larger group. Seems like a fun party idea! read more
