SEFCU Arena - Shot clocks being set up in the bleachers for the America East championship game

I have been to the SEFCU arena for sporting events around 10 times in the past few years, and have…read morenot been particularly impressed. Parking: They've charged anywhere from $5-10 for parking for women's basketball games, which in my opinion is way too steep, especially given that the lot is quite far away from the entrance. Concession Stand: I'm assuming the variety offered depends on the event, but I've noticed a decline in options over the past few years, which is a bummer. They do usually have nachos, candy, and a few other staples. Seating: Most of the seats here are super uncomfortable bleachers. Be sure you get one of the seats with the backs if you don't want to be totally miserable. Most annoyingly though, this place always seems to be experiencing some sort of technical issue. While hosting the America East Championship Game a few years ago, they didn't even have a working scoreboard for the game... they literally made an announcement in front of thousands of fans asking folks to "download the Great Danes app." What about older fans who don't have a smartphone? They also didn't have working shot clocks... again, this was for the Conference Championship game. They literally had to set up shot clocks in the bleachers. I honestly have never seen anything quite like it for such a high-profile game. Not sure if the blame for this sits with the venue, the conference, or what, but it was all pretty embarrassing and unacceptable. To be fair, they do now have a nice new video scoreboard that hopefully will be more reliable. Also, the SEFCU staff are generally pretty friendly. Overall, SEFCU is definitely not the best basketball venue in the America East, but it's not the worst so... I suppose that counts for something?

But it's not the Saratoga Race Course's fault that I'm not a racetrack guy, because I've been to other racetracks and this is about as good as it gets. It's just a fun day when you bring your family out. There is SO MUCH food to get down with. There's excellent pizza, barbecue, seafood (lobster bisque was money), Hattie's fried chicken, pastrami from Carnegie Deli, gyros, tacos, ice cream, and about a thousand different sandwiches. There's cocktails, and wine, and beer (a whole tent just for Guinness). There's all kinds of places to post up and hang out between races. You can get tickets for the grandstand, sit in one of the many areas available, or get into the fancier club spots. And although most of these things cost more money than they should (like everywhere else these days), you can also bring in a picnic, drinks of your own, and make a day of it having just bought a ticket to the show. Like I said, it's not really my thing, but it's hard to have a bad time.

The horses were incredibly powerful, the races were close, and the energy was electric! We hired someone to arrive early and reserve a picnic table for our group. The table was near the path the horses took from the barn to the track, so it was very cool to see the horses and jockeys up close before each race. I bet on all 11 races, which elevated the experience because I had a stake in each one. I will definitely be back!
