Anyway, here we were. I was desperate to try the Brisket Pie, but it was sold out that day (boo). I had the Steak & Ale pie instead and just imagined that I was eating rib, shin and brisket. Either way, it was delicious. The clotted cream mash was divine! The deduction of a star is because I had a 2-inch long rosemary stalk in my pie that was dismissed out of hand when I pointed it out. To someone else it could have been a choking hazard. The building is ridiculously historic. The service was pub service - at the bar and you're done and onto the next person. You'd kind of expect this being that it was a weekend close to Christmas and pretty busy. Try one of their in-house infused fruit gins or the brewery's own ale.

We had a chat with the friendly owners who are Italian immigrants and the wines (tangy with a bitter finish) and beers (hoppy) they recommended were just as they described them. We shared an aubergine bake (delicious) and chips (small and nothing special). Luckily they weren't t showing any matches and the garden wasn't packed.

That's right - this dark but warm little pub is brimful of random pig toys, pig posters and pig sculptures. It adds a unique atmosphere to an already well-known atmospheric pub. Being only about 20 houses away, you can trust me that this is a true local gem. After 5 on most nights you'll find this place packed with drinkers who can't be bothered to go home just yet or catch the train home to the villages. Even if it's near-freezing out you'll still see us taking our beers out and sitting on the grass by the BBC next door so that the smokers can smoke away. In fact, I think we did!…read more It's good to see somewhere balance between pub and bar, and Cambridge is lucky to have somewhere like the Brew House as opposed to the usual chain suspects. The interior is very light and there's plenty of seating, with a 'restaurant' section towards the back and more upstairs. We headed straight to the bar when we arrived and looked over the different options. As usual, there were cask and keg available, which you can choose either from looking at the different labels (so sue me, I often choose my drinks based on the design!) or at the large blackboard. They also have some cans and bottles in the fridges, plus wines and spirits are also available. I tried some of the Cambridge Brewhouse's own pale ale - when in Rome and all that - and stuck with it for a couple of pints. It was nice and light, and a great session beer. Service was friendly and reminded me very much of drinking in Manchester; they're more than willing to let you taste a few of the beers and talk you through their favourites on that day. Worth a visit if you're a beer fan.
