The Amersham Arms was renovated last year, going from a rather dodgy old man's style place to an almost painfully pretentious new venue, associated with the famous Lock Tavern in Camden. Pretentiousness aside, they have done a really good job with turning the Amersham into a welcoming and cosy new place with a vartiety of attractions and nights on offer. The food is amazing and wholesome, and not too pricey for what you get. The sunday roast is something to behold with an almost canteen style distribution of food; you line up with your plate, chose your meat and then take your pick of veggies and potatoes and of course condiments. Seconds if it all hasn't been gobbled up! Good fun and great for hangovers. The burgers are delicious too- the real real deal. During the day it's a great place to just hang out, read your paper catch up with friends etc but at night it turns into a proper venue with up and coming bands, DJs, theme nights, comedy etc. Upstairs is an art gallery showing off local artist's work- quite hit and miss but by no means the main attraction. The crowd is very studenty and fashionable (sometimes perhaps a little too fashionable for my liking) and bodes for a good atmosphere.

Review Highlights - The Amersham Arms

This is my favourite bar in south east London and it has been for many years and, just like a fine wine, just keeps getting better.

While you can hang out in the crowd and grab a pint easily without that, if you want to dine in the quieter dining area with views of the water you may want to do so as well. Especially if you want the elbow room to enjoy such great food. The Mayflower is named after the famous ship carrying the early American settlers, and the church tied to this voyage is steps away where apparently an unmarked grave hosts the resting spot of the captain of that ship. It's candlelit and kind of romantic on the top floor with great views. For food, my wife had the chicken pie and I had the special of the day, lamb stew with housemade potato salad. It was warm, flavorful and delicious, sentiments my wife shared on the pot pie. We split an order of mac and cheese, and it was also delicious. Such great comfort food. I had a small scotch pour and an ale, my wife a glass of wine. I had a small port to pair with the sticky toffee pudding at the end which was terrific. My wife swears by Gordon Ramsey's recipe of the same but this one was hard to beat IMO.

The beer was good and so were our dishes- my wife got the roast and I got the fish and chips which were both exceptional! Service was quick and to the point.

Yum! My husband and I came here for dinner tonight as our first stop in London. After spending all…read moreday traveling, we were thrilled with the drink selection. The Merlot was delicious! We ordered onion rings to start, the breading on them was amazing! It was light and crispy as opposed to being heavy and greasy like a lot of onion rings. I also loved the curry ketchup that came with them. I'm not generally a curry fan, but it definitely worked with this dish. My husband got fish and chips. The fish was perfectly fried and the tarter sauce was obviously house made because it tasted very fresh and lemony. The chips were fine, but unremarkable in my opinion. For my meal, I ordered pumpkin walnut gnocchi. It was delicious! Just enough pumpkin without being overpowering. There was quite a bit of kale (I think it was kale, the menu didn't say) that came with the dish. It was very good, but probably could have been dialed back a little. The service was friendly and prompt. Definitely a great way to start our London vacation!

The establishment has a nice mixture of cozy and airy, which was perfect for a lazy(ish) Sunday. I hate to use this word, but I'll use it anyway (because I can't think of a better descriptor): the service here is "super" friendly, and very knowledgeable, particularly regarding the ales on tap. The barkeep gave us a few sample pours without waiting for us to ask, which we greatly appreciated. Because of that, we were more than happy with the pints we ordered. Moving on to the food: the roasts were delicious, in particular the pork loin, which was moist and flavorful. I enjoyed my roast beef as well. The Yorkshire pudding was wonderful and I might have been just as happy eating that alone for my meal, to be honest. The pub is in walking distance of the touristy areas of Greenwich, so it's easy enough to put some good food in your belly and continue on to your sightseeing, afterward.
