The food was excellent! Anyone that comes here has got to try the Tomato Pie! Wow! Every meal here was amazing! Cooked to perfection by a great chef we met. Our service was great, thank you Paulette! Situated right downtown in the square, just beautiful.

The American was recommended to us by everyone when arriving in town. Another prime location, located right on the square downtown. The hostess stand seemed slow and unorganized but we eventually had a table. The place wasn't too busy when we arrived at 6pm but it took the 3 hostesses about 5-10min looking at their seating chart to make a decision. By the time we left around 8pm, there was a line out the door. Our server, Dustin, was fantastic. His knowledge of the menu and southern hospitality truly showed. He made a ton of recommendations before we made a decision. We started with a bottle of wine before we both ordered the Hawaiian Ribeye. They let the meat marinate in pineapple, garlic, and ginger for 48 hours before cooking and it truly showed. The flavor was sweet but not overpowering and we both loved it. I had a side of brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes and both of those were good but nothing special. I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the brussel sprouts being chopped up. Overall, a cool historic building revitalized as an inviting restaurant. There isn't a bar to sit at but they had a drink list. The wine list is nothing special as the only cab options were crazy expensive or on their limited list that weren't anything out of the ordinary. Our server was great and the food was delicious.

The pimento cheese was my favorite!

We've eaten here twice. This place is an oasis in the middle of nowhere for the serious foodie. The interior brick is really cool as are the chandeliers and wood trim. The tables are set very nice with candlelight and most importantly the food is out of this world, both lunch AND dinner. The food is really good!! We've had the burgers, the pasta as well as the cornbread, goat salad, and charcuterie board. The goat cheese on the goat salad is fried. Don't miss it. We have loved everything we've ordered and the service is always good too. This is not just a local favorite, people from Florida drive up here as well. Olevia and Bailee were terrific hosts. This is one of the coolest places in a small town I've ever been to. It's very clear to me, someone cares about what happens here. Thank you "The American" for being AWESOME. My family and I will be back. Although we're 600 miles away, this was our second time here.

Second time here --- still wonderful! The food and atmosphere will not disappoint! The staff are all very pleasant and attentive. My turkey and pimento was simply delicious. The hubby's grilled chicken literally melted in your mouth. In conclusion - this place is a must stop every time when head south for the beach!!

If you're looking for that perfect combination of culinary, expertise and down home wholesome delicious food, the American hits it on every level. From the delicious heirloom tomatoes, avocado, basil and mozzarella salad to the burger that is so fresh and perfectly cooked when you take a bite, steam literally pours out of the burger. This is a five star all around place to eat! Also, the decor is lovely! I would definitely recommend this restaurant. I look forward to returning soon.

The atmosphere at this restaurant is great. Beautiful spot with good service. The menu changes daily but you can look on their Facebook story to check it out. Food was overall very good! Banana cream pie was my favorite part so delicious! Also best cheese grits I've had anywhere.

We always love going to the American. The menu changes so it is not always the same thing. I love their mint sweet tea. Highly recommend.

We ordered fried mushrooms that came out fast. They were hot and juicy. Fried shrimp was perfect. Burgers and chicken sandwich were also good. Cheese grits and sweet potato fries hit the mark.

This is a little house off the side of a road near a railroad track. I have been here several times…read moreand surprised I haven't written a review. I always start by ordering an appetizer crab claws. They are usually big and you get about 16 of them. They were a little smaller today but still delicious. I do like their tartar sauce and cocktail sauce, which is on the table. The tartar sauce taste just like I would make it and the cocktail sauce has a little less horseradish than I would put in, but it's still very flavorful. The fried shrimp is excellent. My friend likes the sweet potato fries and I like their slaw. The crabcakes Were crabby and not too much bread. Today I had the fish sandwich which was a catfish fillet on a hoagie roll. It came with lettuce, tomato, onions, and dill pickle. The dill pickles were great and I don't like pickles. The catfish was perfectly tender, coated in cornmeal and fried. I always enjoy the trip up to Attapulgus and my service is always spot on. Oh the cheese grits were good. The only thing that I dislike is that the food comes on disposable plates and Styrofoam cups. But at least that way they don't have dishes to do. I'll come back again.
