But as soon as I took a bite of the gelato at Ciao Amore I knew all other places for dessert need not apply. It was SO good! I went here twice and both times I went with the same--a regular cup with two flavors--coconut and passion fruit (dairy free). The coconut had some lovely little cookie bits in it and the passion fruit was made from real fruit as it also had some seeds in it. Both were excellent on their own but really something special together! The space itself is pretty cute. It's a walk up stand though it does have a small indoor space with pastries and a bit of seating out front. It's cheerful and pink and the decor alone will turn your mood around. I'm craving all of it big time while writing this review back in dreary Michigan!

Can get a tad pricey though, with a single scoop on a cone costing more than $10. Pistachio Croissant: A delicious hidden cache of sweet pistachio cream inside. Goes perfectly with the flaky and airy croissant. Ham & Cheese Croissant: A roll of ham and cheese inside. Not as flaky as a normal croissant, a bit bready like a roll. The top, with melted cheese, was quite nice. Strawberry Danish: Love the big globs of real strawberry against the the thick cheese. It's almost like having a cheesecake wrapped in breakfast pastry. Chocolate Chip Cookie: A classic done very well with nice chunks of chocolate. Amarena Gelato: Love the contrast of tart sweet cherries and creamy ice cream. It's subtle, but delicious. Had it in a cone with a nice chocolate and chopped peanuts dip.

I was taught that you can tell "real" gelato from artificial ones by two key factors: fake gelato…read morehas (1) neon bright colors from dyes and (2) is piled in high, fluffy mounds that sit well above the container lip. Well, unfortunately Mammamia gelato hits both the criteria for the fake stuff, and in my desperate attempt to eat something sweet and cold I still gave them a shot. To no surprise, the flavors are artificial and the lemon had a distinct, unpleasant aftertaste. The chocolate was okay, but the fruity flavors (which are typically the best choices for gelato in my opinion) all left much to be desired. I will say the guy at the counter was nice and let us try a BUNCH of flavors -- at a certain point we'd tried so many we felt like we needed to buy a scoop simply out of politeness, but were also faced with the conundrum that none of them really seemed all that great. I will say it's also nice that this place is open until 1am, and I bet after a night of drinking they would all probably taste better. To be honest, there is a MUCH better gelato place literally just around the corner from this one, and frankly I would recommend you take the 30 steps and get "real" gelato from that place instead. Sorry Mammamia, I love your name but that's about where it ends.
