The Albert Arms has been closed since July 16 ( now Oct). Sorely missed pub in Esher, hopefully will reopen ASAP.

It was a shame since we're traveling from LA and really wanted my husband to have a drink there as I've been there a few years back. We're a mixed race couple so we assumed that was the reason!! Which was rinsed off quickly as soon as we arrived back to our hotel with a great welcome of hospitality and great pleasure!!!

So I'm glad to be able to report unbiasedly that The Bear is a solid English pub serving good food and ale. You can tell from the large dining area that the kitchen does produce some good food which is major draw to this pub. There's an international flavour to the food with the influences ranging from Scandinavian gravadlax to oriental hoisin duck rolls to Mediterranean salads. However, I tend to enjoy the English traditionals most here like Gloucester Old Spot pork belly or suet crust chicken, ham & leek pie finished off with a sticky toffee pudding for dessert. They also have BBQs on their deck in the summer and you can even pre-order your lunch to save time. All in all, the Bear is furry good!

Quick glance: + fantastic French and English food…read more+ generous portion + happy and helpful staff - reservations recommended Full review: Three of us came here for a late pub lunch on a rainy, lazy Saturday. There is a small car park for a dozen or so cars, and luckily for us we arrived to filll up the one, remaining free spot and dodged the rain to quickly get into the pub. Once inside, we were warmly greeted and shown a table in the main restaurant. The choices on the carte du jour is sumptuously enticing, offering dishes split between traditional English pub grub like fish and chips and French edibles like escargot. The incongruity was at first puzzling; how good would French dishes be in a pub? And how good would pub grub taste in a French setting? Is it French or English?? We had the escargot to share, and the garlicky dish was satisfying and necessitating more bread to soak up the buttery goodness. My (petite) friend opted for the cod and chips, which was enormous but so tasty that, to my amazement, she polished off every last piece of the fish. I was deciding between two dishes and ultimately went on the waiter's recommendation for their seafood stew, apparently new on the menu and well received by other patrons. I wasn't disappointed when the dish arrived on a wooden platter. The visual and smell made my mouth water, and I couldn't wait to tuck into my meal. The fishes came in chunks to allow me to taste the freshness and sweetness of each piece of seafood on offer, and enormous flavours bursted with every mouthful. If only I had room for dessert. Next time! And I'll make sure to book ahead of time too!

The quality of the meal was fantastic. I ordered their petit filet with their creamed corn, a combination of corn, a touch of cream, spinach, onion and bacon that I'll make at home having tried it this way here. They butcher their own meat every day, and the filet was very tender, cooked as desired. The overall menu has something for everyone, and meat lovers are very likely to enjoy the options. The restaurant itself was lively but not so loud that anyone was shouting... a very comfortable place to eat and enjoy company. It's also dog friendly. I'll try to make it back again on the next trip through Heathrow... thoroughly enjoyed the meal.

So I'd definitely commend the Black Swan. UPDATE (Nov-11): After several visits, I'd now have to reduce Service from "Good" to "Generally Good" - there are unfortunately more than one member of staff who need some education about "Customer Focus" ...

It was served with chips and three different salads. A great kids menu too, with smaller portions of adult quality food. There's a definite relaxed bourgeois quality, if you are into that sort of thing. Dishes range between 9 and 15 pounds for lunch. I did have to sit in a chair that kept sinking back because it was half on brick and half on gravel, but the food and atmosphere made up for it.

It was a Sunday, which also explains the crowds (families, friends, etc). The Sunday offer of a starter and an entree for Pounds 19.95 was a good value. We enjoyed our starters (mushroom on sourdough bread, shrimps and avocado, butternut squash soup). The starters was 5 Stars across the board. What was terrible was the service time. We put in our orders 15 mins after we were seated. It's now 1.5 hours after we had been seated, and there's no sign of our entrees. Which is why I have time to type this in the restaurant. It was very difficult to attract the attention of any waitress. It has been about 45 mins since we finished our starters. A table next to us turned over with new diners after we had finished our starters. As we were about 10 mins into our entrees (served 1 hour 40 mins after we were seated), the table next to us were served their entrees (same roast rump, they did not have starters). So, it's clearly a management and kitchen issue, and not the crowd factor. We have to say that all entrees (roast rump and pork belly) were just average (2.5 Stars). Oops...the bill was wrong. They added an extra drink. Hmm..... Perhaps choose a weekday for your outing to this pub if you wish to give this place a try.

Good menu selection generally well prepared. I had the duck recommend by another Yelp fan; although tasty it was a bit dry (hard to do with duck). My wife had a sandwich and was "pleased" with it. Seems a popular place that gets busy about 2:00 2:30. All ages, including some well behaved children. "Decently priced considering the area it's in."
