    yelpers in the beer garden

Today I possibly ate the best sunday roast of my life. No kidding. Granted I was a little in need of nutrition after a debauched night out but wow, wow, wow, am I dreaming of that gravy or what!? With hints of orange and rosemary and the high probability of looking sounding like a twat, the delicate flavours filled my gob with joy. Actually I think i want to bathe in it, Garden Gate do you think you could muster up a bath full of the stuff? Thanks, that would be great. It's so hard to find a good sunday roast in London. It's all about the meat, veg selection, the all important Yorkshire pudding. The Garden gate ticks those boxes. For about £9 you can have a mountain of chicken, pork or lamb, perfectly cooked and served in the sunshine. This is ideal outside dining. They even have a BBQ going on the weekends over the summer. I've been to this pub a few times and it's always busy. Don't let that put you off, wait a while and one will come free. I promise you its totally worth it. Not only does this pub have an awesome selection of ales but also cider and beer. All served by super friendly staff. After a walk on the heath, it's the perfect way to spend a Sunday.

This pub looks great and because of this i had really high expectations especially as it's in the beautiful Hampstead area near to the Heath. The beer garden is huge and beautiful and in summer there can be a great atmosphere here. The staff are friendly if not a little slow sometimes but the beer and food are OK, good for a pub but again as this is situated at the bottom of Hampstead Heath I had higher expectations. Another thing that shocked me was the presence of some ruffians kitted out in their chav trainer and trackie combos. I think this pub has a lot of potential and i hope someday they will realise their potential. However, it's still a nice place to stop off for a sociable drink or two.

Come for the beers, stay for the garden. The food is worth staying for if you know what to order. The aged roast, unfortunately, wasn't particularly fetching. The meat was served flat out cold as if it came straight from the refrigerator though the roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding were just fine. On the flip side the fish and chips was fabulous; a full skin-on haddock fillet paired with minty mashed peas and thick steak fries. The bar and its garden, I must admit, is one of the most well groomed I've seen in these parts. It has the feel of a backyard of a spacious northern California home, if you catch my drift. Just remember to cover your drinks whenever the wind blows unless you actually enjoy the taste of tree leaves and pollen in your pint.

The Garden Gate is a 19th-century gastropub with a beautiful beer garden and a quaint wood-panelled period interior in the heart of Hampstead. It's no more than a minute's walk from the Hampstead Heath Rail Station, and the same to (or from) the Royal Free. My family and I love this rustic looking pub and have at least one extended family gathering here every year (this year included). The garden is heavenly when the weather permits, and the whole establishment is dog-friendly . Although their menu offers little more than typical pub grub, everything they serve is really good. The burgers, for example, are a favourite of ours. As are the posh-looking sausages and mash. After trying a couple of different dishes, I now stick to the fish and chips which I find as good as any dedicated chippy. The steak is small, but you get a prime cut of meat which is usually cooked just the way you ask. Yeah, the girls and boys in their kitchen know what they're doing. So does the team behind the bar. This pub is well worth a visit. Hey! Now read this - Xerxes physically dines at, or orders from, each and every venue he reviews. Another Saturday, another meal at a delicious dog friendly pub. This time it was The Garden Gate right by Hampstead Heath station. I ordered a selection of starters including scotch eggs, feta arancini balls and chips with cheese and gravy. Portions were larger than expected so could have gotten away with just ordering 2 starters but the greed got me. The chips/cheese/gravy combo was definitely a favourite but I also really enjoyed the scotch egg. The large garden area meant that we could soak up the rare London sunshine and the self ordering service meant there were no long waits for service. All round thumbs up from me.

Enjoying the beer, garden and puppies at Pup Idol 2015

This pub next to Hampstead Heath is full of character and charm. I recently went there for Pup Idol. As the name suggests it is a dog show, though really just an excuse to play with some puppies, raise some money for all dogs matter and drink some pints. The pint selection was great, my Dorset friends getting particularly excited about the Cheddar cider. The food was spot on and came out quickly. Beer garden is big with a great atmosphere as well as options to sit in the shade. It's definitely one to remember when heading up that way!

Superb summer spot. Outdoor seating surrounded by luscious greenery. Great customer service, food was delicious... And very reasonably priced. This is definitely one of Hampstead's hidden gems. Also, if you have a dog or love to be surrounded by them, this is a go to spot! Highly recommended - easy 5*.

I think the Highgate Inn is best described by what you can find inside. You get all the necessities…read morefor both casual and committed drinker alike, fruit machines, heavy oak tables and even the unbalanced bar stools but that is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. This pub seems to have all the little extras that make a great pub. For a start the Juke Box (something which you really don't find in enough pubs) has an amazing array of songs, from the popular to the obscure allowing you to adjust the backing tracks to your night accordingly (although I did get some dirty looks when I put on 5 James bond themes in a row). The sofas (found to the rear of the bar) are incredibly comfortable and very easy to get enveloped by, I would recommend heading to the Highgate inn for these alone, the beer access is a plus. If that isn't for you there are plenty of normal seats and even the option to stand if you would like. In terms of drinks the array on offer is diverse (not ground breaking but certainly not dull). On occasion you may see the odd alcohol dispensing nick knack behind the bar (I once witnessed a bottle holster that caused a desperado bottle to float in mid air). Little props like a frog fountain that spews fog, 4-5 ft tall wooden horses and the occasional seal teddy hanging from the many abstract paintings create a hint of a quirky atmosphere without making that the theme of the pub. Should you feel the need to smoke you will be forced into the street but before you hit the pavement you can take refuge in the outside chairs complete with matching tables, not the best in the winter but better than having to dodge pedestrians. All in all this is a very under attended pub. The staff are helpful and polite, the locals and newcomers seem to get along well and the atmosphere is on par with most of the other pubs in Highgate (better than some).

A decent 'old school' pub on Archway road a bit further on from the Woodman as you head up the hill…read morefrom the station. Inside you find lots of beams and dark wood, fruit machines, TV's for sport and plenty of seating dotted around including some sofas. It's all a bit mismatched and thrown together the way a pub should be. It reminded me of being in a little out of the way place in some village somewhere where the pretentiousness of London had passed by unnoticed. The beer on offer was ok, my London pride was pretty good although nothing special but for me the appeal of this place is the ease of getting a seat compared to the Woodman, the fact inside it's like pubs used to be before they all became identikit carbon copies of one another selling overpriced dismal food and trying too hard to be the next big foodie destination.

Salmon on gnocchi was also good. Bit of a Gastro style pub. Not a cheap menu kind of pub. Nice patio. Handsanitizer was very sticky, like they had mixed it with honey. This is on the corner of Billionair's Avenue, where dictators do their real estate money laundering. I wonder if the House of Saud ever come here to eat fish & chips, because apparently they own 10 houses on the nearby exclusive avenue. The only thing I didn't like was that to use the bathroom you have to touch a rusty old dungeon lock key attached to a century old metal mug to open the door, because I guess we can't be trusted with an unlocked door that is locked from the inside. My Diet Coke wasn't very cold. But I had a nice time here and the service was friendly.
