Hilton Garden Inn Columbia Downtown - Exterior

Hilton Garden Inn Columbia Downtown

First, the good: The…read morebuilding is pretty new and very clean and pristine. My room especially was really nice, not very large but a square shape for the main bedroom which made it feel spacious for one or two people. The interior design with its dark greys sleek furnishings was what you expect and hope for in a new, modern, mid-range hotel. The lamp by the desk was especially nice and for once, a hotel desk lamp which actually provided good light. The bathroom, especially the shower design, is also very sleek and aesthetic. The downstairs lobby area is alright but slightly confusing and the stairs are laid out a bit weird, though close to the elevators: it seems all American hotels believe all their customers will take the elevator, which is sad. Especially up just a few floors. The parking lot, shared with its sister hotel, is spacious though part of it is around back: it's nice to have free self-parking at a downtown hotel. The bad: Hampton Inns, also owned by Hilton, have complimentary breakfast. Hampton's price-point normally is a bit lower than Hilton Garden, too, but I've stayed in the Hampton Inn out by the interstate here in Columbia and despite being older, it's very nice, clean, and really one of my favorite Hampton Inns anywhere. No one in writing or otherwise made clear if breakfast at the Hilton Garden was or was not free, but when I went down for it, breakfast was spread out buffet style just like a Hampton Inn so I helped myself. Shortly, a staff member accosted me and while it was clear she was trying to sound professional was a bit curt, asking if I was a Diamond Member or whatever. I told her no, but if there's a charge for it, here's my key card, just add it to my room. She said oh, don't worry about that right now. Then she was back five minutes later with a receipt for me to sign. Look, if you needed something like that done, tell me, do it when we first began the conversation as I offered. Plus, the breakfast which they charged $14 for was not as nice as what the Hampton Inn offers for free. That said, the passive-aggressive attitude of the staff member docks this review two stars.

Upon arrival, parking was limited, although it was conveniently located close to the hotel. That…read morealone would not have been a deterrent. Walking up to the front desk, I simply needed to check in. The initial reaction, what do you need? No greeting....The response....checking in. Two hotel keys were requestedand received only one. The room itself was spacious and clean, but unfortunately, it smelled of smoke. During the evening, the weather was beautiful, and we were enjoying Columbia. I thought, "It's a hotel--things happen," and tried not to let the initial issues affect our stay. Unfortunately, after returning to the hotel, we stopped at the bar. Two gentlemen were already sitting there with their drinks. After about ten minutes, the manager came out and asked if we had been served. We said no, and he told us he would go get the bartender. Another ten minutes passed, and we decided to head toward the elevator. While we were in the elevator, the manager informed us that he had found the bartender. At that point, we said, "No, thank you." He apologized, but by then the opportunity to provide good service had passed. The breakfast experience was even more frustrating. When the room was booked , breakfast was added and prepaid. The online booking process was confusing, and prepaid for two breakfast buffets...this was added to the reservation. When we went to breakfast, the employee greeted us and handed us a menu. We explained that breakfast had already been charged to our room, but she questioned us about whether we had filled out a ticket when we arrived. At that point, I was thinking, "Please don't send me back to the uninformed desk clerk. I need someone to walk me through this again." She explained a ticket needed to be filled out upon arrival but she became upset. Lack of communication between departments isn't my problem. I decided I wasn't ordering anything and would simply grab a piece of toast. I was then informed that the toast was $4.00. I asked where the butter was and was told that they don't put it out. Syrup, peanut butter, and every type of jelly are sitting out--and apparently, butter isn't simply available with the toast. At that point, the entire situation became frustrating. I eventually told the employee that I understood this wasn't her fault, but I was simply over the lack of hospitality and service throughout the stay. I was also disappointed that the manager did not appear to take accountability for the lack of service from his employees. My advice to anyone considering this hotel: Be prepared, ask questions, and make sure you fully understand what is included with your reservation--especially when it comes to breakfast and additional charges. The biggest issue for me wasn't one isolated incident. It was the repeated lack of communication, service, and hospitality. If you need to book this hotel, go in knowing exactly what you're paying for and what to expect. Otherwise, you may want to reconsider making the reservation.

Excellent stay right in the heart of downtown Columbia!…read more The hotel is upscale, clean, and comfortable. Rooms were spacious with great amenities, and the beds were super cozy. The location can't be beat--right next to the State House and walking distance to restaurants, bars, and the USC campus. Staff was friendly and professional. Having Ruth's Chris on-site was a bonus for a nice dinner without leaving the building. Will absolutely stay here again when visiting Columbia!

First off - the front doors are not open due to construction so entrance is through the Ruth Chris steak house. Reception is located in the hallway on makeshift plastic desks. I requested headphones and person at the desk was trying to avoid getting up and handing me a pair so I asked three times before I got it. Room is clean but worn out. AC is old and tired and getting temperature right is an art form. Water pressure in the shower is great - but keeping water hot is hard. It was either too hot or too cold. There is no complementary bottled water or even one to buy in the room. No clocks or alarms, and certainly no microwave. I ventured in the morning to the front desk to buy coffee and they had none. They directed me to the Ruth Chris steak house for breakfast at $18 a person which comes with coffee. No individual coffee available. Of course I had to wait for restaurant to open. Pool is not operational. Elevators are slow. I was charged twice for valet and had to argue to get it taken off. Let's face it - this is not a hotel. It is a Ruth Chris steak house with attached rooms. Shame on you Hilton!!! I am going back to Marriott!

This hotel feels very new despite some reviews being from a year ago. Everything from the lobby to the guest rooms were spotless and well maintained to us. Check in was easy, the staff were friendly throughout our stay, and the overall experience was smooth from start to finish. Our room was surprisingly spacious and included two queen beds plus a fold-out sofa/futon, giving us plenty of room to spread out after a long day of exploring nearby Congaree. The beds were comfortable, but the real MVP of the room was the shower. The water pressure was absolutely marvelous - a small thing that frequent travelers understand can make a huge difference. Parking did come with a modest $5 fee, which wasn't ideal, but it certainly wasn't enough to detract from the experience. Breakfast the following morning was solid with plenty of options to fuel up before hitting the road. Clean rooms, friendly service, comfortable accommodations, strong shower pressure, and a good breakfast. For a quick overnight stay, I really have no complaints. I'd happily stay here again.

Staff was very helpful but the noise, the odd setup in the room. Had a toilet room and a shower room which I don't like. I'd rather it be close to the shower so I can do my business and jump right in the shower after. Just not setup well. The refrigerator every time it shut off it sounded like someone knocking at the door. Dirty glass found in the nightstand and they don't clean well at all. Luckily I brought disinfectant wipes with me. Never again will I stay here.
