Staff was semi-helpful. Late night staff, amazing. Morning/ day staff was less so. We stayed for 5 nights and consistently ordered breakfast - some of the time was right, others missing items or wrong. Food is expensive for lunch. Front desk staff was incredibly difficult in trying to recover a cell phone. Despite is giving them a good amount of business, didn't seem to matter even asking for someone to be helpful. Was a decent week until we asked for something small while trying to make a flight in another city. read more

Very typical Marriott experience, which is to say, nothing amazing but at the same time, nothing terrible. Room was clean and comfortable and pleasant, staff was friendly and helpful, price was... well, prices for hotels have gone up tremendously in the last few years in ways that they are not justified. $259/night in Columbia SC doesn't make sense to me, especially then to charge me for parking. Parking garage was fine; easy to get in and out, everything was well-marked so you know exactly where to go and how to check in and out of the garage. Overall, a perfectly fine experience. I have stayed at this location quite a bit. Great location and it's very walkable with lots of dining options nearby. Parking is through the city parking garage which connects to the hotel. You can also park on the street. From the parking garage, you walk through the indoor heated pool/gym area. The lobby is very welcoming and inviting. The staff is always friendly and very welcoming. I had an incident which made me uncomfortable, and when I informed one of the staff of the incident, she changed my floor and made me feel heard and seen. The beds are comfortable but the pillows are flat. During my last stay, I requested a feather free room because of allergies, and that request was granted. read more

This hotel seems to be an updated with an attempted face lift but unfortunately it was just skin deep. The place still feels tired and dated even with the updates of new furniture and paint. Fine for a business overnight but not overly impressive. For elites, you get mints and cheese-its (LOL) and a couple of bottles of water when the lounge is closed. The staff are super friendly and helpful though and there is an attached parking garage, which is convenient. Room-wise, pillows could be more comfortable but there are definitely plenty of outlets to choose from. read more

We called ahead and booked our room. When we arrived we went to a room that with dirty bedding, moldy water damaged ceilings. Mattresses that were thin and sunk in the middle. It looked like a room from 1970. We were not about to spend the night on a Marriott that couldn't hold a candle to a Motel 6. Hubs went down to see if they had any other rooms. We are now in a nice clean room which is the only reason I will move this from a 1 to a 2 star review. Why you would ever put a guest in a room that was so awful when you had renovated rooms available is beyond me. After sleeping in their new beds I realize I gave them to much credit. I am switching it back to 1 star. We stay at Marriott's because of the upgraded beds. I have been up all night tossing and turning and now have to get back on the road with very little sleep and a sore back. I would never stay here again. read more

Location: downtown, walkable, nice area. Parking: Valet ($25) or self parking ($14) in a garage. If you park on level 2A/B, the garage has a bridge walkthrough that takes you straight to the Hotel, and you will take the elevator down to the first floor for check-in to the lobby. Note: Valet attendant told me they will not charge EV cars. Mine specifically had never charged a Tesla before and didn't know how to do it... so I opted for self parking. The two EV chargers are right next to the bridge walkway. Service: eh, nothing gave me the warm and fuzzies here from the check-in, to the valet, to the concierge lounge. Food: Pricy and bland. I felt like I could've had a better salad at Panera. Cleanliness: My junior suite was gross. There was a dead cockroach, two fruit flies flying around the bathroom, and behind the doors were filthy with dirt and hair. The carpet was stained brown by the cockroach. About a one foot section... and the hotel room just smelled musty. Like the carpets needed to either be steamed or ripped out and new flooring needed to be installed. Overall: the hotel is fine for an evening, but I wouldn't stay multiple nights here nor will I personally stay here again. It's essentially a hotel for banquets, basketball season hosting the opposing team etc. think volume not quality. It's grand and large but not what I typically expect from a Marriott property. read more

I would give a zero if I could. over priced rooms for graduation weekend. if you or a family member are military or a Veteran stay away. The management at this location was rude and disrespectful to a Purple Heart Recipiant from the Viet Nam War. They were flying a torn and tattered American Flag and refused to do anything about it. Probably the worst experience at a Marriott. They texted me to say my room was ready but upon arrival at the hotel, the front desk said the text was a system error and there are no rooms ready. 2 hours after normal check in time ...no room and no timeframe on when it will be ready. It is obvious the hotel overbooked and is scrambling to get rooms for people with reservations. read more

From the outside, it doesn't seem appealing, more mundane and consistent with the other hotels and buildings in Columbia. But when you walk in, it looks like a 4 star hotel, with open spaces, lounge and bar and a restaurant down in the lobby. Their fitness center is sufficient and their pool is small, but I was the only one swimming so there were no overcrowding. Wifi is included, though you have the option of paying a little more for their high speed internet. I think the complimentary wifi was sufficient enough since I didn't have any issues. Prices were reasonable, and I used their military rate through their marriott.com website which made it more appealing for me to book here instead of the Sheraton. My bed unfortunately had worn down linen. Worn down enough to the point where you can tell the linen didn't really fit the mattress anymore, causing stretching and tears along the corners of the linen. TV was good and I think they had HBO as well. Overall a decent experience. Wouldn't mind coming back here especially with the military discount. read more

The number of assorted bums that begged me for money outside my hotel amounted to four and I really didn't leave more than five times, way to go Columbia.! Keep us heavy spending tourists safe from a problem that apparently didn't spring up overnight. The hotel lacked a soft charming feel as it is clearly outfitted for conferences. The ambiance had some artistic appeal from the cutsie department gingerbread house building challenge to bulbously large hanging lamps and filler hanging designs. The well dressed and quite big security detail was never more than fifty feet from me as I believe his training dictated. Riff Raff kept coming into the lobby to "use the bathroom", and taking up space at the lobby's pricey lounge, ordering a water and took a few views of NFL Sunday and possibly casing the patrons a bit. At least someone was paying attention to the people spending the money. He spoke very little but his intense demeanor spoke volumes that came and left quickly. The Steak Sandwich had a mean vein running through but, the cut of meat seemed to be a skirt and really delivered with intense flavor. Tomato Bisque was a pureed tomato paste which lacked any infusion of non tomato flavor. Served with tiny tots points of grilled cheese the flavor needed a hint of something, perhaps a dollop of goat cheese on top. Small unheated pool, small gym, however --- a fine group very attentive staffers from beginning to end. Won't be coming back, very disappointing. read more

If you are with one of the law firms, or going to the Capitol, or the courts, you are better off staying at the Sheraton, closer to where you want to be and on a rainy blistery day that matters. Or if you are running late. You will be appreciated there. The Hilton is a bit farther but has Ruth Christ inside in case you are doing some entertaining or just want to eat well. read more

Thief alert! My friend and I stayed at this Marriott overnight. My friend has Elite status so we were upgraded and comp'd breakfast. A very nice stay till the end. As we were leaving, my friend left the room first and I was doing my last walk through when housekeeping barged in without knocking. She was polite and apologized but it distracted me from finishing my walk through. In that process, I ended up leaving a very expensive pair of earbuds (Beats) with charging cord and plug (which belonged to my Amazon Firestick). I called the hotel 2 hours later (landed in Atlanta) and was sent to housekeeping. I was told they'd left for the night, after I'd explained what I'd left, and to call back the next day. Needless to say, they were never 'found'. Just realize you can't leave anything at this hotel, it won't be returned. read more

The reason I like this Marriott is the food. The room service shrimp and grits are just awesome. It is really rare to find a hotel with room service food this good. I have not stayed at this property recently, although last time I did it was in dire need of an update. I was SUPPOSED to stay at this property next week for my son's graduation and booked almost a year ago. Last week I received an email from the property manager saying I was being relocated to Fort Jackson. What?! That is NOT convenient to campus for us. And it is NOT good customer service. Marriott used to be known for good customer service but this is the third issue I've had in the last 5 months, none of which were satisfactorily handled by customer service. The Hampton on Gervais is a FAR better hotel. Stay away from this one - or any other Marriott for that matter. read more

The hotel is nice and conveniently located in downtown Columbia. It is a very large hotel with over 10 floors. It does have an indoor swimming pool, meeting rooms, workout facility, and restaurants. They also have a parking garage that is attached to the hotel which is nice. The only bad thing is that there is a $12.99 charge. Personally I feel if you are staying there then parking should be free. Otherwise it is a good choice if you are in Columbia read more

Solid hotel option located downtown. Parking is available in an adjacent public garage. Location is nice as it's right on Main St and there are some shops and restaurants you can walk too and it's 5 minutes by car away from the Vista which has a tons of food options. This is good because the hotel restaurant is not that great. Def go out for food. The staff is super ridiculously nice. Two big thumbs up for them. Gym is small but they have a deal with the YMCA which is down the street that you can go to as a guest with your room card and id which is awesome. The hotel is a little old and dated and the rooms are a little small. There's no mini fridge or microwave. (I had previously stayed on their sister hotel the Courtyard in Columbia which had both, so I found this odd since the Marriott is the level up brand). Despite not putting the AC on auto, it seemed to shut off randomly. I wouldn't not stay there again but I would also maybe explore other options. Overall pleasant experience. read more

Why is the overall rating so low?? Stayed here on business and loved it. The staff is above and beyond nice, from front desk to bartenders to housekeeping staff - I've been to much fancier hotels where they weren't as kind and helpful. They have an indoor pool that connects to a tiny rooftop patio. It's right next to the gym which is just fine and what you'd expect from a hotel gym. They have about 3 ellipticals, 4 treadmills, and 2 bikes plus weights and such. The room service staff goes above and beyond. My fiancé has stayed here a few times and they remember him by name. Our breakfast order was 10 minutes late. The woman profusely apologized and insisted it be on the house. One morning when I went to put the room service tray outside the door, my hand slipped and the door closed behind me. Thankfully I was clothed but I was barefoot. Embarrassed, I headed to the front desk to ask for a new room key and explained my situation. He asked for an ID per protocol but since I didn't have any, I offered to spell my fiancé's last name in full since it's crazy long and hard to pronounce. He laughed and pulled out a new one for me no problem. I think it was pretty obvious I wasn't lying since I was barefoot in the lobby lol. The location is close to restaurants and coffee shops within walking distance too. read more

Nice hotel in a good location with access to everything either by walking or short car ride. We were here for a Friday and Saturday night. The check in was quick and front desk very nice and helpful. The hotel is little dated in some areas but our room was clean and nice. Everything seemed updated and modern. A couple of areas were a little off Marriott standards. The patio outside the pool area had dirty tables and chairs. We also noticed that glasses were left on the tables all weekend. Also had a problem with the parking garage. Neither of the exit lanes the gate worked. Took 10 minutes for someone from hotel to come out and help. He told us this happens quite frequently. Would be nice to put a phone number on exit to call for help if this happens a lot. read more

Downside: I pulled back the bedspread and the sheets had clearly NOT been changed. Upside: I called downstairs, they apologized, and sent someone up almost immediately to change the bedding. He also promised to make sure it would be checked tomorrow. Better upside: they offered me free breakfast in the morning to make up for the inconvenience. No hotel is perfect. I've only ever use this hotel for conferences and have not stayed in any of the rooms. I will say the conference space is quite nice. The space is comfortable, and the employees truly do focus on making our events quality events. The room we were in on this day was very hot, but several of the other rooms were freezing. It would be nice if the hotel could figure out how to get the conference room temperatures regulated. We didn't have an overly large group, but everyone in the space was extremely warm. Overall, this was a very good experience, and I would recommend Marriott for conferencing. I will update the review if I end up staying here on a one of my visits to Columbia. read more

The room was clean and well decorated, the equipment in the work-out room was up to date and the elevator was quick (I stayed on the 11th floor so that's always important to someone a bit claustrophobic). For dinner both nights, I ordered in their bar and took the food to my room and it was very tasty. When I couldn't find a soup & salad combo on their menu one night, they still managed to order just that for me from their restaurant and not charge me a service fee. Even access to the garage, which is across the side alley, is simple via their covered walkway over the alley. I really enjoyed my stay and would do it again, if I found myself in Columbia again. read more

Spent one evening here as we were doing a college visit at university of sc. The staff was fantastic. Dwayne took great care of us at valet the minute we showed up. Front desk staff was great and efficient. Pleasant experience. Whoever cleans on the fifth floor is great at their job. It is an older hotel but you wouldn't k know it by how clean the room was. The reason for three stars is the beds were horrible. The rate was good but not really worth the bad night's sleep. Back hurt in the morning as it felt like a floor for a mattress. This review is bad because of one central issue. An issue management knows about but fails to address. I do not recommend you stay here!! Period! While this hotel is an older building the staff are very good and almost everything is done very well. Most of the things you expect when you spend the extra money for a Marriott Hotel are in place. However, Columbia apparently has a homeless problem in the downtown area. There is a Homeless service organization two blocks from the hotel. So hotel staff turn a blind eye to homeless people using the lobby and it's restrooms at their leisure. Apparently it is ok to go for who knows how long without a bath and come into the bar by a beer and watch college football! Apparently Marriott customers should learn to adapt to this new aroma etc., and escort their wives and daughters to the bathroom. Since the local homeless men are using the men's room for everything they need! If you expect to wander around a luxurious hotel lobby have a drink, have lunch, breakfast of dinner and talk with friends while you are in Columbia and stay at this property ... travel in pairs and carry Fabreeze! The homeless issue in every city is a serious problem on many levels but allowing them free reign of a luxury hotel is not an answer or a good idea! read more

Everything was great here except for one thing, which I'll get to in a bit. First, the goods: -We arrived about 2 hours before check-in time, but they still let us check in AND upgraded us to junior suites. -Very very quiet in the rooms. -My coworker is platinum (I'm just a lowly gold member), so the front desk staff gave us breakfast coupons, so we had awesome free breakfasts. Seriously folks, if you can get breakfast here, do it. They have everything you could possibly want for breakfast unless you're a weirdo commie America-hater. -Yes, you have to pay for the internet in your room, but you can go down to the business center and get it free. Free printing and copies for the first few pages, too. -Location is ok, hardly anything within a 2-block radius is open on the weekends but you can walk to everything in the Vista area in about 10-15 minutes. -Somehow, we got our garage parking for free. I guess the garage cashier is closed on Sundays, so we didn't pay when we left. And the bad: -My first night the mattress had no cover on it, just a very thin sheet. It was gross and old-looking. I could see the pattern on the mattress through the sheet. I left a note on the bed for housekeeping to change it and put on a mattress cover the next day, and they did, and I'm sure if I'd bothered to call the front desk when I first noticed the problem it would have been fixed. However, it was still pretty unsanitary and it raises the question of what other basic things housekeeping forgets to change or clean. read more

I've stayed at this hotel for half a year on my last project. It is a great location - walking distance to several gyms, restaurants and attractions! The staff is beyond wonderful. Everyone behind the front desk, and of course Ryan, will take care of alll your needs. The night staff, the day staff, I wish I could name them all but I fear I would leave out a fabulous name because they are ALL awesome! The rooms are nice and comfy as well as clean. I found that I liked the 12th floor best because it was just a floor from Concierge. Vince is one of my favorite chefs and his Shrimp and Grits are TO DIE FOR. Ironically, I didn't really use the gym at this location because I either went to Crossfit Vista or the Y across the street. Did you know you can use the Y for free when you show your Marriott room key? I guess my only gripe would be parking. . .but since I never really had to park my own car or a rental in the garage, I'm over looking it in my review. Mark this location down as a Marri-rott. Falling apart, in the middle of a refurbishing of guest rooms and a renovation of the lobby. So if you like construction workers smoking up the entrance this is your place. I called ahead and they gave me a room as requested. The folks at check-in were nice and it didn't take too long. Wanted to use the app check-in, but it wasn't working. Get the keys, hop in the elevator car that looks like it's from 1960, and head up to the room. Unlock the door and get knocked over with a terrible stench. The scent of a dirty old Marriott. They have new bedding, an HDTV, and that's about the extent of it. No mini fridge, no minibar. Bring water and a cooler to survive. The bathroom was tiny by today's standards. The shower had fantastic water pressure, the local fire department would be envious. The Internet: non-working most of my visit. Perhaps the dumbest SSID ever, "hotel". Really??? Might as well just be a default router name like "linksys" It was frustrating for business people that rely on Internet for ftp downloads, and printing for work. Most budget hotels have better tech offerings than this Marriott. Housekeeping was disappointing. Day one they shorted me two towels. Day two they chose not to clean the room at all. Followed all the rules, no "Do Not Disturb" posted, out by 9am. I just got lost in the fold so to speak, but a good housekeeping manager wouldn't let that happen. Next time it's off to the Sheraton, or a hotel a little further out of town. I don't need the convenience of downtown for the inconvenience of a bad hotel stay. read more

We were dazzled by friendly customer service, a really nice bar and a delicious breakfast. Everyone was very helpful, and the entire property has been given what seems to be a thorough, bare metal renovation. The pool and gym were spotless, and very pleasant to use. The gym even had a basket of complimentary headphones for guests to use. I feel bad for the folks who got here before the renovations, or worse, during; I would hope they'd have occasion to try it again. We were pleasantly surprised! I should note that if you're a knowledge worker here for a conference, the wifi has tiers and the free tier is rather slow. This is my only quibble. read more

Upon check in - I mentioned that my daughter's birthday was during our trip. The front desk team member sent up a balloon and chocolate to our room! It was totally amazing for her. The food service was great and the food was wonderful. This hotel is conveniently located to the University of South Carolina and walking distance to the Vista. The front desk staff is great at this hotel and will help you with anything you need! The pool area was relaxing for us while the kids swum. Our rooms where clean and the house keeping service was excellent on our rooms. We have booked another trip to USC and have our rooms already reserved for the next time we visit the university. read more
