I had never been to 1846 before but looking at photos, a lot of the decor is still the same. It was one of those very warm days in Manchester we had in July - remember them! Actually its apparently a heatwave this weekend! Anyway, arrived at Thai Kitchen and we had a table near-ish the front door - which was open wide to get whatever breeze there was through. I was looking forward to going to Thai Kitchen No.6 after hearing it was a family run business and things are homemade. I heard about it when it was mentioned by chef/restaurateur Gary Usher - Thai Kitchen No.6 is pretty much next door to his restaurant Kala. As I looked through the menu for what food I wanted, the most important at that moment was to see what cold drink they had. Ordered a beer - helped me cool down! For starter, we sort of shared. So I tried some of the Esan Sausage (deep fried Thai sour pork sausage) and the Paw Pia Tod - crispy spring rolls. Both tasted good. Never had Esan Sausage before but tasted good. For the main, I went for the Pineapple prawn fried rice. It tasted good but unfortunately I did not realise it had currants in it - not really a fan of currants (or raisins) so had to pick around the currants - although I did eat some and tasted OK. Maybe absorbed flavour of the fried rice. The pineapple was nice and sweet and fried rice tasty. I should have realised though that it was never going to be a "massive" portion because its served in a pineapple and pineapples are not that big. Next time I go, I think I will go for Hainanese Chicken and Rice - which I almost ordered.

I was sceptical at first, expecting a microwaved meal. How wrong could I be!? We were told on a Tuesday it was curry night - 2 Thai curries with rice for £10. Not bad and not a lot to lose so we tried it out the next Tuesday. We were welcomed by a young man who was very pleasant and he said we can sit anywhere. It has a feel of a pub but this is not a bad thing for an informal bite to eat. The drinks order you have to place at the bar and pay separately as it is 2 separate businesses. This is a strange thing but it doesn't detract from the quality of the food. Also drinks prices are reasonable. The food was served to the table by a lovely woman with a massive smile. The smell as the doors opened from the kitchen was amazing. The presentation was excellent. We hardly spoke whilst eating, it was that good. The penang curry was nice and spicy but full of flavour and the massaman was nice and mild filled with chicken and potatoes. For £10 this place simply cannot be beat on a Tuesday! Even at full prices it is definitely worth it. If you are in early enough you can even get a seat ready for the evening entertainment on a Friday and Saturday which is good if you're into that sort of thing. Don't judge this place for how it looks from the outside as it is an excellent place which deserves to do well.

I decided to…read morevisit their Manchester Spinningfields location to try out some authentic cuisine, after being impressed by their reviews. Sadly, they have only had one review since 2016 so perhaps things have changed since then, as my experience wasn't that impressive. On the positive side, I loved the decor, it felt authentic, with an open kitchen towards the back, and Thai themed decor including a map that shown Thailand on the wall. It just felt pretty cool and authentic. The only major problem I had was how cold the restaurant was inside, it was freezing cold, unlike anywhere else in Manchester that day, I was wearing my fully zipped up coat and shivering, despite it being July - which is supposed to be Summer! I was unimpressed with the service, I was not offered a drink upon sitting down, my waiter just sat me down and left me to it, he didn't explain the concept or even ask about my allergies. Another big negative for me was I didn't feel my allergy was taken seriously, I did advise my server I was gluten-free and I explained I had scanned the QR code on the menu for allergy information, she didn't mention anything regarding their allergy policy, nor do anything to give me confidence eating there, I originally wondered if she even heard me mention I had an allergy. I also found it hard to get a staff member's attention when I needed it, such as to request a takeaway box, or even request some more water or the bill. I ordered the Chicken Pad Thai, it looked pretty impressive, but I found the taste to just be OK, I do think the noodles were very heavy and there was nothing to balance it out, there wasn't too much chicken and some of the chicken was chewy (I did enjoy some of the chicken though). I found the sauce to be a little too sweet too, especially towards the bottom of the dish, it became too overpowering and a little sickly, it needed something a little bit more acidic to give it a kick for sure. The food menu was reasonably priced compared to nearby competitions such as Wagamama, combined with a number of promotional offers including a 20% student discount and a 30% discount for NHS healthcare workers. I also didn't like how they added a service charge onto the bill of 10%, this was stated in the small print of the menu, the staff member didn't seem too happy about removing it, they refused to even acknowledge me, even to say "Cheerio" after that. I did also notice a charity fee of £1 added onto the bill, this also annoyed me as I should be able to judge which charities I donate to and when, let alone having it added onto my bill without any mention of who the charity is, or what they do (Unlike the service charge the charity charge was NOT stated on the menu!) 2* - It feels authentic but in many ways, I was let down, if you consider the optional charges they add onto everyone's bill, it is one of the cheaper places for Thai food in town, but I really wouldn't advise going somewhere else.

From the outside it looks basic but when you see the menu and get your food served it's far from basic! Amazing sized portions and just so authentic. With a couple of other people we went for one of the banquets to experience what they have to offer - I was very happy with everything. My companions felt that the starters were a little disappointing, or at least quite generic and at times lacking flavour. I thought they were great though, because I value variety over quality perhaps! We all liked the soups though, which were packed with chicken and other tasty bits. The we had a selection of mains, from prawns to beer and so on. Tender meat, interesting sauces and fresh ingredients: all fine by me.
