Shrimp vindaoo - red one and fish goan curry - yellow one
    Kashyap J.

Happy to find the Indian place. The couple who runs the restaurant personally makes sure the patrons get what they are asking and are satisfied. We had shrimp vindaloo and fish goan curry. Both bases were tasty. Thanks for suggesting to go with mild on vindaloo. You have to order rice or naan separately and it's cheaper if you have curry. But on its own it's a dollar extra! The best part was the chef remembered we wanted very mild daal rice for our toddler and it was perfect. My kid finished it all. The seating area is small and you have to line up to order and then grab a seat. But the food will be piping hot and fresh. Would love to see them again if we visit that part of island in the future.

    THAT INDIAN PLACE! @Poipu, Kauai
    Lance L.

Since 2012, I have been extremely lucky and absolutely blessed in that I have been able to come to the Magical Island of Kauai 7 times!!! Why is this relevant?? Because since our first visit, every time we return to Kauai, we will always go to our favorite restaurant spots from the prior trips that we fell in love with and we usually try to find at least one new place to see if it will become worthy of being one of our "regulars". This trip, in July 2024.... We found THAT PLACE!!! The only problem... I'm never going to remember what it's called. Something Indian... Indian Palace? No, that wasn't it! Indian Place?? Close... but something's still missing! Oh yeah, now I remember... THAT INDIAN PLACE!!! To the person who came up with this... You just might be a marketing GENIUS! It's absolutely clever and I will ALWAYS remember the name! O.k. Let's get one thing straight right away! I may never physically make it to India... But the way this place smelled both right outside as you walk by and once you walk through their front door... May be the absolute closest that I will ever get to actually going to India and let me just to tell you.... That Indian Place is making their country PROUD!!! Let me tell you.... It's been 18 days, well now 19 days now that it just turned midnight as I'm writing this review and I can still smell the curry, the absolute LOVE that was pouring from the kitchen that day and I assure you, if you love Indian food too, you are going to know exactly what I'm talking about. As we entered the front door, we were greeted by a sweet woman standing begging the counter. We had a big dinner planned that evening so we just wanted to get a light lunch to hold us over. We ordered a Samosa appetizer, an order of butter chicken with Basmati rice, garlic naan & plain naan, a side of Raita (an Indian yogurt dip) and a Limca canned soft drink (described to me as an "Indian Sprite"). Once we ordered, we sat down in their covered outdoor seating area and anxiously awaited our food. All I knew was this... If the food we were about to get tasted half as good as it smelled when we walked in... I knew we were in for a treat... Unfortunately, the food didn't taste half as good as it smelled............. It tasted 100 times better!!!!!!! Ho.....Lee.....Crap!!! My taste buds were in pure Nirvana!! The Butter Chicken made me want to cry tears of joy! The Basmati Rice was so fluffy, so amazing, it was absolute perfection. The Naan's were heavenly (I was all about that garlic naan) and dipping it in the Raita.... Oh My God was it Gooood! The Samosa appetizer was excellent, I only wish we would have ordered some more. When I asked about the Limca soft drink, the lady said some people love it, others not so much. I personally love trying things from the country of origin and experiencing different cultures through the food. I will say it's more of an acquired taste, but I'm sure glad I gave it a shot. My ONLY regret... Not experiencing the rest of the menu. Looking back now, next time we are for sure going to go crazy and get at least 3-4 dishes and truly get the real experience versus just a light taste like we did this past visit. So if you come to Kauai and you love Indian food... Heed to my advice: COME. EAT. HERE. (You will not regret it!!) As for us... That Indian Place is now on our list; it's officially one of our regulars and we will most definitely be back next visit to Kauai. (Located in Poipu @Poipu Shopping Village) To the Chefs in the kitchen, to the sweet lady behind the counter who helped us... Thank you for your hospitality and the ridiculously delicious Indian food! We will see you soon!!

Delicious Indian food in the Poipu shopping mall. We got chicken tikka and Palak paneer with rice and naan. You can specify your preferred spice level. The dishes were flavorful and authentic. If you are hankering for Indian food on Kauai then this is the place for you. The curries were creamy, fresh and absolutely delicious. We cannot wait to come back.

Opting for Indian and Thai are our go-to options when traveling because they typically are veg friendly and because they are our favorite cuisines! That Indian Place was the only Indian cuisine establishment around the Po'ipu area that came up in our search when the craving hit. We had a busy, adventure day and just wanted to order take out and chill at our apartment. We read about the small portions in previous reviews, and hesitated a little, but with it being the only spot, we gave in. Located in Po'ipu Shopping Village, there are plenty of other establishments to choose from. We had tried another spot earlier in the week and loved to see the diversity the plaza offered! During the dinner hour, parking was challenging, but we eventually found a spot to pick up dinner. The smell of curry permeated throughout the plaza! For such a small restaurant, they know how to pack a punch of flavor. The lady at the counter was very friendly and our dinner, samosa, naan, two orders of curries and rice fit neatly in small, brown lunch bag. The portions truly were a bit laughable at first. The samosa could be finished in one big bite or two medium bites , but they were delicious nonetheless. We had the vegetable Korma and the Palak Paneer. Both were delicious, and while the portions are much smaller than what we're used to, we were satiated and happy with our overall experience. They do charge seperately for rice ($1.95 if you order a curry, $3.50 as a side) and even the rice portions are a bit stingy, but again, we were happy when it was all said and done. I acknowledge that there is a higher cost of living on the islands and there is a tourist tax pretty much anywhere you go. Pricing and portions aside, That Indian Place has a lot of positive to offer the Kaua'i community and to the visitors that come and go. If you like Indian food, you'll likely enjoy That Indian Place! Go give it a try.

On our last night on Kauai, my family and I came here for dinner and I wish we'd had more time to keep eating our way through the menu! We started with an order of Onion Bhaji, which were crispy, flavorful, and the mint sauce was really fun. For our entrees, we ordered the lamb vindaloo (medium), palak paneer (mild), and a classic chicken tikka masala (medium). When I say we scraped every drop of the food out of the bowls, I am not exaggerating! The flavors were bold and well-balanced, the medium spice level had a nice kick but was not overpowering, and the meats were tender and well cooked. Of course, we also ordered garlic naan, which was flaky and perfect for dipping in all the delectable sauces. For a family of four, we may have over-ordered a bit, but everything was insanely delicious and I don't regret it all! The service was very quick, friendly, and the outside seating in the lanai was very picturesque. If I'm ever back on Kauai, I'm coming right back here for more food!

dishes come in 12 ounce containers, with complimentary basmati rice in 8 ounce containers

Would you pay for naan 7 times what you would pay in CA? We came in person and ordered take out, and received our food within 20 minutes. Dishes come in 12 ounce portions, and each dish comes with an 8 ounce portion of basmati white rice. The $16.95 vegetable of the day was Aloo Gobi, cauliflower in a medium spicy sauce mixed with potatoes. I was third in line at our timeshare, with the ladies taking the top and all the cauliflower, leaving me the potatoes. The $19.95 butter chicken came with three inch cube sized pieces of chicken, and the rest curry. No more than 3 ounces of chicken, or 25% meat in the curry dish. Delicious and tasty dish with strong creamy tomato taste. The $23.50 Lamb Rojan Josh is a spicy lamb curry dish. Maybe 2.5 ounces of lamb, or 20% meat. Spicy hot, have to eat with milk or yogurt to tame the spiciness. Another delicious dish on the spicy side. The $1.75 baby naan is a small 6" diameter bread, perfectly cooked. Tried to order the samosas, but they were sold out. Most Indian places back in Santa Clara county serve dishes in 18 ounce containers for $12-$16 per dish, or $8-$11 for a 12 ounce container. So these prices are roughly double what we pay back home. Curry dishes in CA roughly 60% curry and 40% meat by weight. The naan is the exception and is roughly 7 times of what we pay back in CA, about $4 for four 12" diameter pieces of naan. Good tasting dishes, but severely overpriced even for Kauai, and skimped on meat, compared to dishes back in CA. Tried to order by calling their listed phone number and got a recording that the number was disconnected -someone forgot to pay the phone bill.

Things we Loved: 1. The entrees: We had tandoori shrimp and lamb vindaloo. Both were spiced just right and the staff delivered on our request for spice level (me mild, hubs medium). Both the shrimp and the lamb were fresh and tender. 2. The rice: We ordered the lemon rice. It was literally the best rice dish I've ever had anywhere. I can't even explain how exotic and amazing it was. 3. The service: This is a small family run place and you can tell how much care they put into not only the food but the service too. Things we didn't love: 1. The naan bread was crispy vs chewy. It's a personal preference but it still had good flavor. 2. The raita was watery so didn't serve well as a dip for the bread as it just ran off. Both of these things were very minor to us because the things we loved we really loved a lot. In terms of prices, they were a bit steep. But everything was very fresh AND the portions were very generous - enough to have a 2nd dinner from the leftovers the next evening. We loved this place and are already going back with some friends this weekend.
