I am so excited that we have a new Indian restaurant on Kauai! Cafe Nirvana just opened less than 2 weeks ago and I've already eaten there twice. I will say that the first time we went in, I was a little alarmed by the "curb appeal" and ambience -- so do know that this is a very very casual low key place. But the minute we walked in and chef / owner Robin began talking to us I knew it was going to be great - and it was! For $8, you get lemon rice and your choice of 3 dishes (Robin seems to make 6-8 something different each day.) Amazing deal! It was so good we went back for an extra plate. 2 people, 3 plates, $24 - can't beat that! The food is southern Indian and vegetarian (vegan?). Not sure why this is reported as closed.. I went in for a kombucha at Potions (shares same space as Nirvana) and they were serving Indian food as usual. Was a bummer since I had wanted to go get dinner there last night and chose something else due to this yelp page saying it was out of business. read more

This is the only completely vegetarian (milk products might be there) restaurant in Kauai that we could find. It offers Indian food cooked in medium spice range. They offer a "platter" in which you can choose 3 or 4 curries. You also get some rice along with it. It costs nearly 9$. The food portion was just about sufficient for a meal. If you are very hungry, it might be a little less for you (and you could purchase more curries for 2$ per serving). The owner was kind enough to give us some achar (pickled Indian vegetables) for more spice. The place is very normal looking (nothing fancy). In fact, the owner looked so informal - he was in shorts and what Indians call a banian (under-shirt). They also have a variety of Kombucha available in their bar. I think the food is cooked at once in the morning and kept in the heater for a while (due to low demand). So, you might be better off going right after the restaurant opens (in the morning or evening). read more

Tiny little place Tucked back into Wailua, next to brick oven pizza. As we walked in greeted with a smile and aloha! Six different dish varieties to choose from, with my favorite yellow Indian rice. Only eight dollars! Very flavorful and delicious!! this place blows away the other indian food place.They only have vegetarian dishes.. All the food they make there is from local farms on Kauai. This place doesn't exist or the address on Yelp is wrong. Drove a good 25 miles to get here only to see a patch of barren land. The phone keeps ringing but goes straight to a voicemail that gave no indication of it being any kind of a culinary establishment. Very disappointed! read more

This place is a tiny hole in the wall but the food is great. The chef/owner learned Tamil cooking from his mother-in-law. The place is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. It's just $8 for a meal of rice plus choice of 3 out of 6 or 7 different curries, prix fixe. Highly recommended!! read more

I've been a vegetarian my whole life and Kauai sucks for vegetarian food. So I am always on the look out for anything vegetarian on this island. I had heard good things about Cafe Nirvana so I figured I would give it a shot. The first time we pulled up there was a sign on the door saying "Out of Curry" and they were closed. An Indian restaurant out of curry? Oh well, next time. The second time we showed up around 1:30pm and they were out of all food. We were told they sell out early, so get here early. OK, next time. The third time we got there at 11:30am, we were going to try this food no matter what. And guess what they had food! But..... The lady explained that they were out of most things, including the Naan that came with meals. We were told that the food available depends on what the cook is feeling. So there were no "options" just whatever they had. We got it and went to Foodland to get some Naan. So after all that, the food was not bad. If I were to give it stars just based on the food I would give it 3 stars. But being a veggie, I really wanted this place to pull through. So I tried it a 4th time. This time I got there a bit later this time and they still had some food left, but the almost empty containers were not looking appetizing (my fault for getting there late I guess) , but the same lady came across as quite rude, like she was going out of her way to serve us. So I left. I'm not sure if she just didn't like the look of me or just doesn't care about customer service, but it sucks. So, sorry, 2 stars is the best I can give you, I feel that is even a stretch. I won't be sending any of my vegetarian friends there. Shivalik Indian Cuisine is just down the road, their food is easy on par if not better (not full vegetarian though) and the people there are very friendly and customer service orientated. Please Cafe Nirvana, step up your game a bit, it seems like you just don't care. read more
