Thap Ba is a great family owned Vietnamese restaurant hidden in Red Deer's industrial area. My first experience at Thap Ba was poor due to me ordering a dish that I did not like and getting it as take out. The owner heard about my problem and due to their reassurance I decided to give Thap Ba another try. On my second time around I realized that the first time was not at all characteristic of how great Thap Ba truly is. I received exceptional service from the owner's son. It's always great to see families working together to create such a good business. I started off with some chicken salad rolls which were fresh and delicious. Then I had the vermicelli with grilled beef and it was equally as tasty. All of the ingredients were very fresh and served piping hot. The spring roll was perfectly crunchy and hot as well. Unfortunately this location is hidden in Red Deer's industrial sector and is not very exposed to the public. They do get quite busy at lunch, but you will still receive great speedy service. It's a shame that there aren't more people there at dinner time. Thap Ba also delivers and caters, so you can get their food whenever you would like. It's also worth noting that the restaurant is licensed and offers happy hour from 3pm to 6pm. They also have daily specials for extra deals. Their normal prices are so great ordinarily that the specials aren't really necessary. We picked Thap Ba from Yelp reviews because we're not familiar with the dining scene Red Deer as we're just passing through enroute to Edmonton. The first thing we noticed is how handy the location is, especially if you are arriving from the QE-II from the south. You pass Gasoline Alley and enter Red Deer. Almost immediately upon entering Red Deer the app said turn right and that's at the parking lot. So it's very easy to find and you don't need to drive through much of Red Deer to get back on the highway to Edmonton. We wanted Pho so we hardly noticed anything else on the menu. I picked #13 but I forgot the name. It's the only soup with the spicy symbol next to it. The waiter asked if I wanted fat or skinny noodles so without really thinking about it I chose fat. That was a mistake. Oh the fat noodles were very tasty, but also slippery. Now I'm pretty good with chopsticks at least for a Caucasian, but fat noodles are so slippery that I had to finish off with a fork. Even then I was managing not more than one noodle at a time. I suggest you go with the skinny noodles whether you eating with chopsticks or a fork. Now on to the pho. This may be the most delicious pho I've ever dined on. It was thick with lots of meat, noodles and green onions. I could hardly add any bean sprouts because it was so thick. The broth was delicious. Too bad Thap Ba is an hour and a half from home or I would already be planning my next visit. Yes it was that good. They offer three sizes for the soup. The middle size was less than a dollar more than the small size so unless you want your pho as a side dish I suggest you go for the middle size (I don't recall if they called it medium or large followed by extra large but definitely it was the middle). The level of spice was perfect, but of course that's very subjective. The middle sized bowl was under $10 so I consider that to be a bargain. I can also tell you that the washrooms were large and clean. The café decor is somewhat dated but we only wanted to eat there, not rent a room so decor maters little. The service was very fast. They are likely accustomed to a lunch crowd of workers that have limited time. I can certainly recommend Thap Ba for great pho. read more

Great, healthy, tasty food! Real Vietnamese the way I like it, and inexpensive too. The fresh salad rolls with pork and shrimp served with peanut dipping sauce was superb, and the salad with vermicelli topped with spring rolls perfect, just add some Sriracha and hoisin sauce for a great lunch. I visited this place yesterday finally and upon arrival was greeted promptly. I of course had come for the pho! The bean sprouts and lime were fresh and I got the large beef version. Healthy amount of noodles and green onion but not a whole lot of beef although it was good and not sinewy. Broth had a nice full flavor and I appreciate the additives for the soup to spice it up! My bowl however was not removed upon finishing and I only saw my waitress when she took the order and brought my order. No check on if it was good but I can usually live with it lol. I went through Red Deer for work and stopped by Thal Ba because of the yelp reviews. As usual, the reviews were correct. This place is really good! I'm not overly familiar with Red Deer, but I'm willing to bet it's one of the better places in town, especially for Asian cuisine. We started out with spring rolls. They are small and skinny, but very tasty. They come with an awesome dipping sauce that's kind of a sweet sauce. I also threw some of this spicy chutney type thing they have table side on top. It was a perfect blend of flavor and spice. It was a great way to start the meal. For my meal I had the beef Bahn Mi. It was excellent. I'll be the first to say I'm not super familiar with Vietnamese food, but this tasted very fresh and was a great combination of flavors. It was sweet and spicy, which I'm a sucker for. The carrots and zucchini was very fresh tasting. Overall, I am very pleased with what I ordered. We were very pleased with our experience here! Very good pho! I like their regular size, not a meat person and the regular size just works out perfectly for me. Their pho is lighter than usual pho places I think. And the price of course is amazing. I'm from edmonton and here normally a regular size pho is around $10. Theirs was only like $7.50. And I was full. Very friendly service too. Decided to come here with my boyfriend for a lunch date. I was in the mood for Pho and I hoped it would help me feel better with my cold, and it did! He had never tried Vietnamese food and loved the stir fry noodles with beef. I ordered a bowl of pho with beef, really liked the broth and it had lots of rice noodles. We were very pleased with the spring rolls as well, they were nice and crunchy:) Decent pricing, fresh ingredients, and service was pretty good too. Passing through Red Deer and looking for something quick but a step up from burgers and fries. This place, just an extra two minutes off the highway, did not disappoint! I had the bun with grilled pork, shrimp, sausage, etc -- (the special) and it was spot on! Meat was very flavourful with the right amount of caremalization from the grill. My companion had the hue style pho, and it was acceptable, but nothing to write home about. Very spicy. Portions are a bit small, but often times with Vietnamese there's just soo much noodle. Good food, good value (as is typical for this type of food), good service. Like that they deliver. Personal favorite Pho in Red Deer. Vermicelli dishes are also very good - same goes for spring rolls! My kids love it too, and our family eats a lot of Asian cuisine so we are quite picky. Tried a few other dishes and they always have lots of meat and veggies. I find a lot of other places don't have very much meat at all in most of the dishes and often flavor is lacking but this isn't the case with Thap Ba Restaurant. My friend and I went here to grab a quick cheap meal and cheap it was but quick it was not. We were one of three tables in the place and we received some of the worst service I have ever seen. It was so bad that I couldn't bring myself to tip and that never happens. After our first glasses of water we they were never refilled. Our server never checked in on us after bringing us our food and when it came time to get our bills, we waited for what seemed like forever. The only saving grace was that the food was quite good and very affordable. I haven't decided if I'll go back or not yet. If I do I'll make sure I have lots of time on my hands. After reading all of the good reviews for this restaurant, I was pretty disappointed in my experience here. Came in for lunch with my mom - I had the pork and spring roll bun, she had the hue spicy pho and a vietnamese coffee. The pork on my bun was well flavored, but everything else was very bland, including the spring roll and the vinaigrette that you dump on the bun. My mom's pho was completely bland, tasted like water with some spice in it, nothing like a true pho broth. The worst part though was the vietnamese coffee. The server who made it took well over 10 minutes, as he apparently struggled with the filter. The filter still had issues after he brought it to the table and took well over 10 minutes to completely filter through, was no longer hot, and was served with too little milk - pretty much undrinkable. When we said something to the server he first said he wasn't sure how to make it, and when we complained further (saying that there should be more milk), he said that just how they do it there and that their customers like it. OK. Overall, the mostly bland food was probably worth three stars after adding some sriracha and fish sauce, but the slow, marginally competent service brought it down to two. My mom didn't leave a tip (mostly because they still charged her for the undrinkable coffee), and that's pretty much unheard of. read more

No service.. We were one of three tables and once you get a small glass of water don't expect your waitress to come back again. The food was bland without the sauces at your table there would be no flavours. To top it off there were lots of little kids running and screaming and our food took forever to arrive to the point were i thought they forgot about us. Amazing place to eat. There's usually the workers kids and family around and it just makes you feel very welcomed. I either get the beef and beef ball soup or the beef vermicelli. If you get the vermicelli and ask for extra meat you'll most likely have leftovers for later. Incredible beef. Usually I don't have bad experiences here but today my boyfriend and I went for lunch and had one of the owners children standing beside our table and wouldn't stop talking to us. While we played along for a while I just wanted to talk to my boyfriend but the child would snap in my face or tap my shoulder to get my attention. We even told the child, kindly mind you, to leave us alone but instead he persisted on. The waitress watched from another table as a child of the company bothered their customers.
