I spend about 3-4 weeks in Red Deer each year for work. Every time I am in town, I ensure to make at least one stop at the Blue Dragon Restaurant. Red Deer has a handful of great local restaurants and this is one of them. We found the restaurant last year and I have been back 3-4 times since and have never been disappointed. The restaurant is kinda hidden as it is off the main streets of Red Deer in a commercial area but don't let this turn you away. The food and portion sizes are great, service is friendly and all for about $15-20. We met an old friend at the location of his choice given he had eaten here a few times. Typically would not choose Vietnamese/Cambodian for dinner, because I always feel hungry before bedtime. You wouldn't expect a restaurant such as this to be in an Industrial area, but here we are, or rather there we were. The interior is what you would expect in a warehouse type environment, but they did what they could. Our server was great and took very good care of us while we were there. The food was pretty good, but not excellent, which it has to be to get that extra star. My Dragon bowl was quite good, but lacked that real impact in spite of the additions I added. I get the impression that the cook knows what he/she's doing in terms of flavor, presentation, ingredients. Service was excellent and attentive. Ambience was good. This place is always bustling with business whenever I visit, and it's no wonder why - their food is absolutely delicious! I dined here recently on a Friday night and it was a full house! Upon speaking with the server, apparently this was very unusual for them, but if you plan on dining here, I would recommend making a reservation just in case, as space is limited. The restaurant is small, cozy, and well-lit. They are located in the industrial area of Red Deer and have shared parking lots with their neighboring garages and businesses. Finding parking was difficult on this particular day as it was busy. My go-to is usually their Dragon Bowl, which is a vermicelli bowl with spring rolls, vegetables, shrimp, and pork - highly recommend for fans of vermicelli bowls. This time, I ordered their Yellow Chicken Curry which comes with bamboo shoots, but I added eggplants for an extra $3 and substituted the rice with coconut rice for an additional $2. Wow! The Yellow Curry had a perfect balance of sweet, savoury, and creamy which worked so well with the eggplants; the flavours were simply amazing! Beware of the spice level though! It was labeled as a 'one chili pepper' spice level and I was advised by the server that this would be pretty mild, but I personally found it was closer to medium heat (2 chili peppers). I was left disappointed with their coconut rice - I'm not sure if there was a mistake in my order but their coconut rice tasted just like regular rice, or perhaps they just don't use enough coconut milk. Either way, I'd likely stay clear of their coconut rice next time around. Overall, this is definitely a hidden gem in Red Deer. If you like spicy South East Asian food, this is a great place for you! read more

No bland Pho here...and on a cold/rainy day diners should try the Dragon wonton soup with its great balance of spices and fresh ingredients (which can cheaply and easily be shared due to the generous portion sizes) Though the decor is simple and the location is awkward, the friendly service, inexpensive menu, and tasty food make Blue Dragon a hot spot for a dinner out in Red Deer. read more

I read raving reviews from Yelp, Urbanspoon, and a friend. I was excited to try this place. The restaurants tucked away off the main road. The atmosphere matched the flavor of their food, drab. The portions are small. The service was good. Everything arrived together in a reasonable amount of time. Usually thai curry dishes are served in a bowl full of the sauce, however there was barely any with each entree. We ordered their #1 Panang Kai dish, which was mediocre. My mom and I use to go here and get the pork dragon bowl with bbq shrimp ,vermicelli noodles and spring rolls! We loved it! But I hadn't been in a year or so and went back a few weeks ago with my boyfriend...unfortunately tried the pad Thai and it was the worst Ive had..no flavour and just looked bad. Had a grey colour and no good taste whatsoever... staff is friendly but unfortunately won't be back. I would recommend maybe just trying the bbq pork bowl and sticking with that. read more

A hidden gem. I'm in love with the whole family of restaurants in Red Deer and Sylvan (Sophear and Bamboo Hut). Their Tom Kha Gai soup is delicious and so are their curries. I like mine with more liquid (almost like a soup) and they'll accommodate if you ask! Great service, and spectacular food every time!! 2 to 3 times a week I will stop in for the Golden Chicken immediately following an intense gym workout. It hits the spot perfectly!! Wow! Super amazing food! The young chief at this little hole in the wall restaurant has some serious talent. My husband and I (super foodies) went to try this place on recommendations and were incredibly impressed! It is not easy to find but well worth the search as together we shared the spring rolls, Tom Yum Soup and then each had a dish that we sampled together. Mine was the Lemon Grass Chicken and my husband got the Cilantro Chicken. Thai is our fav cuisine and we have eat much Thai from all over Canada and can honestly say that this is the best we have ever had. The service was also very friendly and never rushed. Our dishes were cleared quickly and we didn't have to wait long for any part of our meal. We were not shocked to see the awards given by the city to this small place on the wall when we came in. The dishes were amazing, presentation was gorgeous, flavorful yet not over powering and totally generous with the portions. We would eat here again in a heart beat. read more
