I'll admit just like so many of you, I've actually spent more time out of the gym than in it this year, but something has lured me back from the my abyss of laziness - Virgin Active! First there's the receptionists - they actually like people! And engage with you, I know shocking !!! Not rocket science, but we all know those places where the receptionists talks on the phone, while swiping your card without even acknowleging you right? The main gym comprises of all the usual suspects in terms of equipment, plus 3 power plates (joy!) and best of all a 20m stainless steel pool, that you can see while you are on treadmill -either very entertaining or throughly distracting depending on how your treadmill slot is going! You can book personal trainer sessions and huba huba - upstairs it has a mini spa ! The two dance studios are great, not too big, just the right size for you to still disappear at the back of the class when you want to. The classes are also good with a class timetable which is helpfully divided into category levels cardiovascular,conditioning etc. Now for the big one the changing rooms - surprisingly good. Lockers and showers that work, cotton buds a plenty, well lit mirrors and very clean. My monthly membership is well spent !

Breakfast is outstanding. Always have the smoke salmon and scrambled eggs. Tea and scones in the afternoon. Played golf too. I am no Sean Connery but felt like it playing on the scene of Goldfinger. Anyhow. Can't say enough about the service and the staff in general. We are all stars there and yes there is. Wonderful. The Spa is second to none and being a tennis fanatic have often been to the Boodles tournament on the lead up to Wimbledon. Anyhow staying there or not I frequent as often as possible. Monsieur took me to Stoke Park Club for a special occasion late last summer. I'd spent the previous…read more4 months learning golf and practising on different courses but not one prepared me for how tough the championship golf course is at SPC! Having said that, I made my way around 18 of the possible 27 holes and managed to score a couple of bogies while we were at it. But by the famed 18th hole where James Bond played Goldfinger in the film of the same name, both Monsieur and I were absolutely exhausted. The fairways are long, the bunkers so strategic that they're harder to work around than advanced Sudoku, but if you asked me to grab my clubs and head out for another 18 holes at Stoke Park right now? I'd be there in a shot. During our weekend, Monsieur and I also took advantage of the spa, where there's a country club feel and indoor swimming pool flooded with natural light from an entire wall of windows, we practised on the putting green, hit the driving range and benefitted from a well-appointed room filled with antiques. Our continental breakfast in the Orangery was just right, the lunch on a picnic table overlooking the tricky 15th hole consisted of fantastic BLTs, and the dinner we enjoyed at their fine restaurant was nothing less than Michelin star material. Monsieur and I have now decided to get married at Stoke Park. Need I say more? Yes, it's expensive, but some good packages are available, where you can try a little of everything that Stoke Park has to offer, so keep an eye out. In our view, this place is worth every single penny, and the staff are nothing less than world class.

I can't rate it any higher and in fact debated going 3 stars. Purely because they decorated the changing rooms recently. Great! However why bother doing all the walls to leave the horrid, mouldy at the edges shower floors. Also the hair dryers are awful and the bubble pool, who wants cold bubbles? That said, overall a welcoming chilled out enviroment. The team seem genuinely happy to help you.

I used the cardio machines, the pools, the sauna and steam room during my free trial. The pool was warm and clean, and was pretty quiet whenever I went there. The cardio machines were good, but some of the bikes didn't work properly which is annoying. I liked the changing areas and the showers, nice and warm and very clean throughout. I'd love to join, but £51 a month off-peak is too much for me at the moment.

There is also a creche but not having kids I don't know much about it!
