I was…read moreusing a space (where I will publish photos) for a leg workout and was approached by a personal trainer training his client, he had asked me if I was using the space and I said yes, which until then was fine, he was even training his client in the same space as me and there was no problem. A few minutes later, another personal trainer who was giving classes stopped the class to tell me that I shouldn't be training there and that I had to leave. The way I was approached by this second personal trainer was rude for no reason. The first personal trainer was cordial and polite and didn't mention anything about me having to leave the premises, while the second personal trainer preferred to stop the class he was giving so that he could come and tell me where I can and can't train without any need. I was doing my training, the gym is not free and I was extremely embarrassed by the way I was approached in front of other people. I'm paying for the gym to do my training quietly and not to go through stressful situations.

After that the place is a steal even if the dumbbells only go up to 30kg and there are only two benches/cages for bar squats/press. A good proportion of the clientele is non-Brits (me). There's always tons of good cardio machines free but,the weights do get really busy from 5:30-7:00, however MOST (racist parenthetical deleted) (95%) of folks are fine with you working in on their machine/weights, assuming you don't interrupt their set, even if their English is halting.

What an odd morning my Saturday trip to Powerflex Studio made for. I had no idea what to expect. It…read moreis one of those odd gimmicky fitness things that is there, so I must try. Powerflex uses powerplate machines, TRX, kettlebells, and weights to get you into shape. Powerplate machines look like the lovechild between an elliptical and a giant, flat boulder. The main premise is that you stand, plank, step, or lean on the machine while it vibrates really quickly, making your muscles work extra to keep you stabilized. I'm uncoordinated and can tell you that you have no major risk of falling off, at least no more so than on a regular gym machine (I've done it before). The studio itself is somewhat difficult to find. Once you find the door, you need to be buzzed up. The room is small but full of really all the equipment you need to get a great workout. There are only three powerplate machines in there, I believe. I am not sure what the typical sessions look like, but mine was just with one other person and a trainer. It's amazing to get personalized attention and the trainer was friendly and really gave me a great workout. It wasn't the highest intensity cardio, but you will sweat and more weight work can be added to up your burn. I was surprisingly sore the day after, so I'd believe that the whole stabilizing concept works on some level. There was a man there who was rehabbing from an injury who has found it a really great alternative to running or other higher intensity exercise. Definitely check it out if you're looking for something different.

Great intense full body work out that shows clear results. You can make it as hard or as light as you chose. Instructors pay personalized attention to each of us and they will adapt the exercises to your weak/strong points and your passed injuries. After your first session your body will likely be on pain for 2-3 days, but do not let that put you off. It means it really works and very soon your body will get used and you won't get sore muscles. It is only up to 3 people per session (on some special sessions it may be 4 people). You get very personalized attention by the instructors, who are great, very friendly people. Many of us are regulars, so it feels very familiar. It is really good and worthy, I cannot recommend Power Flex Studios and it's trainers enough.

First this gym is 24 hours, so props to that. Second, it has 2 floors, a ground floor for mostly cardio and the lower level for weight training and a crossfit/functional weight area. The price is reasonable too, but the sign-up process is pretty tedious. Because the facility is so automated, so have to enter a code to get someone to show you around the place. There's a couple of kiosks available to sign up, but I recommend just signing up via the website if possible. I didn't understand how to get into the place until I had it explained to me, since I come from the US, where they have no such automated door system in place. Apparently you enter in a code, press the OK button, and you step inside the pod, and the other side will open when the first side closes. In addition to being more automated, it also reduces the airflow from the outside, which I presume indirectly saves them air conditioning and heating, though the airflow actually might be a drawback when you go downstairs to do barbell / free weight training, because it kind of smells slightly. On the whole, considering it's in London, and the alternatives are simultaneously more expensive and smaller, this is actually a good deal. But even though the weights are re-racked (which doesn't happen all the time stateside), they were all in the wrong place. It's almost like people just put it wherever there was space, no matter whether it was even a matching or pair space for the dumbbells. But once again, for the price and location, this is really small potatoes. I could see myself going here more often if I were staying here longer for a visit.

The gym itself has tons of equipment, machines incorporate free weight aspect to it, tons of great treadmills, open layout, nice ceiling, an airport lounge-esque work-chill area. Bathrooms are in line with the nicer SF locations, steaming available. Limited hyperice is a drawback, also expected newer rowing machines but overall, would recommend the upgrade, some improvements can be made, but the good is very good. (Gym had tons of people but edited everyone out to protect privacy)

Last summer's complete upgrade of the gym led to all new equipment, weights, etc, but could do…read morenothing about the main problem the gym already had - the small size. With a whole university of students wanting to use the gym it really should be twice as big, but unfortunately real estate in South Kensington is at such a premium there's no possible way to make it any bigger. That said, Ethos has done a good job with what space they have. Early in the semester on Mondays and Tuesdays at 5pm you'll have to wait up to an hour to get into the gym (which I've never bothered to do), but as the semester heats up it's not as much of a problem. I usually go in the mornings before work anyway, and it's relatively empty then, so you rarely wait for any equipment (and can usually have your pick of whatever you want!). Other quick notes: 1) I haven't taken any of the classes, but I know several people who swear by them. 2) The climbing wall is small, but you just want to try it out it's great - any other climbing gym in London is going to be better, but if you're an Imperial student/employee it's good enough.

It was completely free for students, which it's unbelievable, giving the facilities available. I only used the Energia gym and tried some spinning classes (which I didn't like at all, they were much better in my previous, small gym). At peak hours you may have to wait to use some of the equipment and there was only a pair of 3kg weights, that kept disappearing. Apparently the gym has been recently refurbished so probably they have new weights now. Showers and changing rooms are very good, and not too crowded even at peak times. I don't think this sport centre is a good choice for someone who is not part of Imperial (staff/student), not even for alumni. It may be good just for the climbing membership they offer.

It reminded me of my home box in that it was a small, supportive community. I went to 2 classes and had 2 different coaches, both of whom were helpful and gave excellent tips on lifts, and on proper, efficient rowing techniques. The members were also very friendly which made me feel less awkward going in. Its located under an elevated train track through a cool brick archway. This would definitely be my box of choice if I were to relocate. I highly recommend this spot if you are in London.

I attended kxu as I was given a voucher to go. the voucher was only redeemable if you have never…read morepreviously been to a kxu class. Not knowing this, I called up kxu gym based in Sloane square and asked the member of staff on the phone this who had said this is fine and told me there is spaces available in the class. I attended the gym class under this basis, upon arrival the guy whom I spoke to on the phone had booked me into the class. behind him was a very rude member of staff who I believe could of been the manager, the manager at points was speaking Italian to other staff members. The manager had then taken over the booking and asked me if I have previously been to the gym and I replied yes he then said I cant go the class unless I pay. I explained to the manager that I have been told this isn't the case and travelled to the class under this basis. He was extremely rude and unapologetic. this practise off professionalism has prevented me from attended this gym class again- the class that had only been booked to half its capacity bases on the miscommunicated information they should of allowed me to attend at no cost. by doing this this would have cost the business nothing but a regular customers whom was aiming to attend weekly being a local resident I was made aware about this gym as my sister and very close friend has attended the gym classes here over an uncountable amount of times. The way the manager had responded was humiliating and uninviting. My initial aim was attend this gym class weekly, for this very reason I would not go to this gym again. This happened back in November .
