Thamel Bistro looses a star because on Facebook they had an event called Rendevouz Nepal with no description on it. But I know it was an event because they reminded me of it the day of. So despite the fact it was one of the coldest days of the year, we bundled up hoping for Nepalese warmth. What did we get? Nothing. We were the only ones there. No music. No dancing. No lights. No decorations. Nothing I feel wrong leaving. So we sat down and as the server brought us our menus, I brought out the Facebook add and said, "Is this happening?" All he said was, "yes we make, we make." And left. We ordered noodles for our kid. Two Thali platters and a momo sampler platter. Here was another issue my kids noodles came in 10 minutes and ours in 30. I am not sure why, we were the only ones there. Food was excellent, as usual. Checked out Thamel Eatery, which specializes in Nepalese/Indian food. It's close to The Tantalizers Cuisine. We dropped in on a Monday evening (6:30pm). The inside is small with 5 tables. Menu is a one pager; start & share, favourites, momo, mains, Nepali sets and desserts. - 2x Nepali spiced chiya ($2.50) - came out piping hot. Very enjoyable. - Momo sampler ($19.99) - opted for the pork. My favourite were the steamed momos. The Nepalese momo sauce paired nicely. - Aloo bodi tama ($12.99) - strange that you don't get a bowl of rice. Very mild curry. - Khaja ($18.99) - chickpeas were the best part of the dish. I've driven by Thamel Bistro and had it on my list of places to try. Then I heard a review on the radio that raved about the momo. Recently ordered take out and the food was worthy of the rave radio review. Some of it was spicy but not mouth burning spicy more like savory spicy. The momo were delicious, we had the chicken momo sampler. Also had the butter chicken, deliciously creamy, and just the right amount of heat. I'd like to dine in to try more things. read more

There aren't a lot of Nepalese restaurants in Edmonton but this one has been getting attention on twitter recently. Seeing this, I had to give it a try, since I've never tried Nepalese food! Apparently their specialty is their momo (dumplings), and they have a WIDE variety of these in both more traditional flavours as well as westernized/modern (e.g. BBQ), and generally in a choice of chicken, pork, or vegetarian for most. Since I had no idea what to try first, I got a momo sampler which let me try 4 types of momo, and I also got the chicken sekuwa, which others had mentioned was particularly flavourful. All delicious! The sekuwa dish left-overs were particularly great the next day, somehow it seemed to have become even more flavourful after an overnight in the fridge. It's not hot-spicy but tender and flavourful. There seems to be a fair overlap between Nepalese and Indian food, so you'll find some Indian favourites like butter chicken, and momo in tandoori sauce. But other dishes I hadn't heard of before (like the sekuwa) and the selection of herbs and spices seemed different. The sekuwa reminded me more of kebab seasoning than Indian food. If you like trying new cuisines and new flavours, I recommend giving this place a try! One warning - if you're not good with spice, let them know when you order. The tandoori momo were definitely on the very spicy side, and would have been difficult for anyone not used to spice, although all the others were quite safe. Momos! The best Momos in the city, easily. My wife and I shared the Momo sampler as a starter, fantastic flavours and textures with the steamed, pan fried, deep fried and tandoori Momo's. We also shared the Nepali Thali as our main, it was delicately flavoured and delicious. The housemade pickle that comes with the dish is wonderful as well, make sure you grab a little bit with each forkful. This dish is pre order only, so make sure you call ahead. Service was fantastic, the owner is very friendly and loves to talk about the food and share his knowledge. Great pricing, excellent portion sizes, this place is finally getting the recognition it deserves. read more

Heard that the momos (dumplings) were good, and wasn't disappointed. Had the momo platter with a chicken dish, potatoes and rice. So satisfied. My wife is from northeast India, near Nepal, and even she was impressed. Eat here. Bring your family. read more
