If I am rating this place as a whole, it gets three stars. But most of those stars are for the atmosphere and definitely NOT the food.
I was astonished when I saw this place with amazing ratings and reviews was situated super close to where I live. Not feeling up to par to making dinner and craving Thai food (but not wanting to deal with the hassle of Aroydee), we walked over to Thai Wok for dinner. It was a Friday night, we immediately got seated and there was plenty of room. The atmosphere is modern, relaxed, and the place is SUPER clean. I was really excited to try the place out.
We ordered a green duck curry and a green chicken curry, both extra spicy. Within three minutes, I kid you not, the food came out to us. Now, I know that Mexican restaurants will slow cook food and can serve up food super fast, but Thai food? I make a lot of Thai myself and I know that to get good flavors, it needs a little bit of time. I understand the sauces were precooked, of course, but my duck would not cook within a matter of two minutes. I love that restaurants want to push food out and do it quickly, but I think maybe relax a little and at least make it look like you are truly cooking something back there. Anyways- the duck was crispy, but the fat wasn't rendered so well and it was chewy and not so pleasing. The food didn't come out very spicy and I dumped a chili paste on top of it. I actually have no issues eating westernized food of any sort, as long as it is tasty. This was just okay. The plate, while presented beautifully, was kind of a mess of sorts. The flavors didn't work well together. But in all actuality, there wasn't much flavor. Thai food is complex in its flavors and you should be able to taste heat with sweet with acid/sourness, etc. This was just sweet. It felt unbalanced to me.
On a few positive notes- it was CHEAP. My duck curry was like 8 euros. I actually couldn't make it cheaper myself, so that was kind of cool. The chicken curry was 7 euros and some change. The place is clean and well maintained. They have a decent selection of hefeweizen beers. They also offer takeout. The service was very nice too.
Because of this place's proximity to where I live, I probably will end up here again. But I will certainly order a different dish. read more
