One of my favorite places to eat in Ames. Tasty Thai food in a cheap price! The location is very convenient as well, closer to the campus.

Maybe it was that we got takeaway rather than dining in. The pad thai was a solid 4" by 4" block of noodles with a few large chunks of essentially unseasoned chicken. No peanuts or spices to be seen, just a chunk of rubbery flavorless noodles. The lard na also suffered from the same 'ball of noodles' problem, although the sauce had a nice flavor (which is the only reason this place gets two stars instead of one). Apparently this place used to be really good but is now under new management and has gone seriously downhill. read more

I don't know how authentic it is as I have never been to Thailand. Pad Key Mao, Thai Noodle Soup, Red Fried Rice, Thai Coffee, Mango-Sweet Sticky Rice, Clay Pot, and the Curries are all really delicious. This place is also perfect for my vegetarian friends they can substitute the meat with tofu or veggies. A critique is that the portions have decreased from about about six years ago... I wouldn't say this food is out of the world, but it is really good (especially for Iowa), affordable, and the wait is never too long. I've noticed comments on parking, and I almost never have problems with parking. And since it is cash, there are plenty ATMS along welch. read more

Too bad I don't live in Ames -- this place is 5 or so hours away from where I'm at now. It's one of my favorite Thai restaurants. The prices are great, the food is great, portions are always huge. Their yellow curry rice is very, very tasty (and I usually stay away from rice in favor of noodle dishes). The interior has far less of a Thai flair than the other Thai restaurants I've eaten at. My bf and i finally got to try an authentic Thai restaurant in Iowa (the owners actually speak the language) and were very happy with our overall experience. Unpretentious place, fast service and good, inexpensive food. I knew it would be a decent place when I walked in because there were a lot of asian customers.. this is always a good sign when youre in an asian establishment. This is the first Thai restaurant ive ever been to where i actually enjoyed the Thai Iced tea. It's typically made too sweet for me to drink but Thai Kitchen makes it just right for my taste buds. Been there about 4 times since I got here from Cali, love the place. My favorite dish is the fried rice red curry or your can call it R3. I like the fact that it isn't high end trendy, it's more like mom and pop friendly. The owners are always around taking orders and picking up the dishes left on the tables. I have found some good Thai places in Denver, but honestly none of them quite measure up to Thai Kitchen. There is no reason to expect that Thai food in the Midwest could be this delicious, but the home cooking style of the delightful Thai family who owns the place makes it amazing. This is one of my most frequent places to eat in Ames. The food is fantastic, the owners are friendly and the service ridiculously prompt, and the prices are incredibly reasonable. Lunch time portions are usually a little smaller than the regular menu entree, but you get a side of the soup of the day as well, which is always delicious. My favorite entrees are the Pad Key Mao and the Pad Namprik Pao, although the green curry is also great. My favorite meat for all of these dishes is their pork, which is always moist and tender and flavorful. I frequently finish off my lunch with a glass of their Thai Iced Tea, which is a perfect combination of sweet, creamy, and refreshing. read more

Generally it is not bad, the flavor is well and the service is good. But somehow the Shaomai I ordered is not fresh. I can clearly see it is frozen and reheated using microwave which makes it dry and sticky. The spicy Tofu beef is good, but the beef seems like made from some beef meatball. The food and prices at Thai Kitchen are satisfactory. However, the reason I am writing this review is to put forth some of their terrible customer service practices. My biggest complaint about this establishment is their posted closing time. The times on their website say 9:00pm, the times on their door say 8:45pm; however, they usually close around 8:15. If you want to go to this restaurant any time around 8, I would just avoid it. If you are there around 8:15, the staff will pretty much hover around you and try to take your plates. Another time when I was there somewhat late, they would not let me order dessert after I had dinner there, and this was around 8:20. They will put all of the chairs up and pretty much pressure you to leave. Another complaint that I have is that they only take cash. This can be inconvenient for some, so plan ahead. Overall, the food and decent prices are worth coming back, but if they want to close earlier, they could just change their posted closing times. read more

My first impression of Thai Kitchen was the ratty exterior, a restaurant crammed into the lower level of an odd mixed-use building with apartments upstairs and a dumpster by the front door. I decided not to let that put me off, as my son had a craving for Thai food and it was Sunday afternoon. I should have gone with my gut. The interior was very dirty, with sticky menus covered by food stains. Ditto for the walls. And I was surprised that only cash was accepted. My son pointed out that we were in Campustown where the restaurants sometimes were cash only, so we stayed. The staff seemed distracted and not really focused on waiting on customers, but, then it was Sunday afternoon. We ordered friend springrolls, chived dumplings, panang curry, pad kra prow. The spring rolls were crispy but unimaginative, the dumplings had a weird texture and were virtually flavorless. The serving sizes of the main dishes were skimpy, typical of what I would expect of a lunch portion or side dish. The curry was mildly flavored coconut milk with a few thin pieces of chicken, and that was it. Bor-ing. The other dish was flavorful but the portion size was only about a cup. We also ordered two soups and although I cannot recall the names I do know that mine had a fly in it. Yup, a fly. Not only was the restaurant disgustingly dirty, the staff not very helpful and the food skimpy, I found a fly in my food. I asked for a refund of my money and we left. YUCK. We had eaten at Thai Spice and that's where we'll go the next time we have a Thai craving in Ames. read more

This is place renovated recently the only thing they changed is the Ambience the menu and the people still sucks big time. They took 45 minutes to make a simple veggie dish then they messed it up by adding chicken. Then add to it the lady at the Counter was unapologetic and blamed it on me for not being clear. Not only that they made the dish with rice when I asked for noodles. If you dont understand the orders and you dont know how to deal with customers then you should not be behind the Counter. So yeah never again ordering from them. and for every1 else still interested check your order twice before picking up and leaving, they might blame you for messing it up.
