I tried Thai Box Zing at the most recent food truck rodeo and it was good, but not better than my favorite local thai place. I had the pork pockets with drunken fried rice which was the special and perhaps I should've stuck with the pad thai or curry that seem to be their staples. I enjoyed my meal, but for $10.50 it was not a lot of food (as compared with my favorite local thai place which gives me enough food for two meals for $10.) I would try it again and stick with the pad thai or curry if they were at a bar that I was at, but I don't think I wouldn't go out of my way to have them again. read more

One of the newest food trucks, Thai Box Zing, has set out to serve a Thai/Laotian fusion to local residents. After spotting their truck several places around the Triangle this month, I was finally able to give them a gander at the "Local's Only" event this month at The Ritz. Having traveled and lived in both Thailand and Laos in my younger days, was very interested to see what they'd have to offer. The menu was simple, with one appetizer and four entrees. But simple is fine by me if what you're serving up is stellar. Thai and Laotian food is not that different to be honest, just as the languages also have many similarities. If you hadn't told me they were fusing Laotian with Thai, I wouldn't have known, as you'll find all the dishes served in both countries. However, I would still say the menu was heavy on the Thai influence, although that's what people are more familiar with, so it's such a tricky situation, especially for a new food truck. But, some sticky rice or green papaya salad with barbecued meats or pork larb would definitely up their Laos game in my opinion. Regardless, we did try the Pad Thai which was delicious and a huge portion for $9.70 (with egg). They had lots of spicy toppings and kindly offered peanuts on the side in case of allergies. The owners, a husband (chef) and wife team, left a good impression and were friendly. Overall, good enough that I'd go back to Thai Box Zing if it were convenient, but I don't think I would hunt this truck down. read more

In really impressed with the food quality here. The first time I ordered from this truck, they were out of everything but pad Thai. I was apprehensive at first because is pad Thai is one of my least favorite Thai dishes. However, I was pleasantly surprised with the pad Thai here. It wasn't sickly sweet like pad Thai is most places and since they had hot chili powder on their condiments table, I could make it as spicy as I like (typically pad Thai isn't spicy enough for me). They also put the peanuts on the condiment table instead of adding them into the sauce which is unusual but since that allows me to load my dish with as many peanuts as I want, I'm not complaining! The only gripe I have about this place is that they advertise themselves as a Thai and Lao food truck but on the days I've been, the menu has consisted of the kind of standard dishes you can find at any Thai restaurant. Yes, I know that Thai and Lao food are very similar but when people hear 'lao' they're probably going to expect something more exotic than pad Thai and red curry. I wish they had some less common and harder to find dishes along with the standards. They do change their menu often though so perhaps next time, I'll see something new and unique! read more

Great food truck! They came to a food truck event at the Holly Springs farmers market and was pleased that this choice was available. I don't think they were previously-advertised so they could have been a last-minute replacement. I got their red chicken curry and loved it. I will definitely look for them at future food truck events. read more

I tried this food truck at one of the summer Raleigh food truck rodeos and got chicken "phad thai" (possibly misspelled, possibly punny?). They let you choose mild, medium, or spicy. I thought medium was pretty mild and I'm only so tolerant of spice. It's served with a lime, and there is a peanut station (which was very nearly empty, but I'm sure they were quite busy). There were a few other options--a curry, and a beef option as well as spring rolls. You can choose tofu or eggs with phad thai (I don't know about the others). The meal was $10.50, which brings the rating down a star for me being that the portion was just kind of small for that price. Also no chop sticks! read more

I haven't seen many Thai food trucks in the area and was excited when I did find one. I ordered the vegetables pad Thai with tofu. First impression, I loved the way they fried the tofus. It was done to perfection. Sadly my excitement ended with that. I soon found that my pad Thai has nothing but tofu, noodles and the sauce. Such a disappointment!! WoW! This place is seriously the real deal. I had the papaya salad w/sticky rice and wings. Everything tasted so fresh & was a great portion for the price. My husband had the Pad Thai w/chicken and it was indeed authentic and delicious. We shared an order their spring rolls which were crisp and full of flavor. One of the friendlier, Raleigh area food trucks with delicious food! I love their pho and get excited when I see that they will be attending Compass Rose Brewery or one of the local festivals. The staff is always so friendly and helpful. Sometimes there can be a bit of a wait between order/food delivery but the end result is always worth it. read more

These guys do it right! Generous portions, fresh ingredients, zippy taste. The spring rolls were crispy on the outside and crunchy fresh on the inside. The cilantro and green onions on the pad thai were tasty and fresh. The wedges of lime and spicy sauce on the side were just the right additions. I will definitely look for them again. read more

Well, I literally just finished my meal from Thai Box Zing. At first, I thought maybe it was a bit overpriced for takeout lunch. But Holy Hell it was delicious. I tried the signature dish, which was the beef jerky, rice with the papaya salad on the side. Since the truck is still outside, I am almost tempted to go out and order another order for dinner tonight.
